I was intrigued to hear his music, so when I heard this CD I was blown away by his talent." - Paul McCartney H ow does an All-Star New York Yankee center fielder make the transition - successfully - from the field to the recording studio? Baseball Almanac is pleased to let Bernie Williams explain it for us:
"My first experience with music was listening to my dad playing the guitar. He brought a guitar from Spain - he was a merchant marine - and he used to play it. My dad was self-taught and it would be in the middle of the night and I would hear this note sounding throughout the whole house. Sometimes I would wake up and listen and go ask him, "what is it that you are playing and how can I learn.' When I became eight years old, it became a passion. I began to take formal lessons with a neighborhood music teacher and when I was in ninth grade, I went to a music high school. That's where I got all the music technique and an introduction to classical music.

Biography Any baseball fan knows how Bernie Williams plays. The superstar New York Yankees center fielder has consistently flashed grace, passion, disciplined focus and a remarkably fluid sense of rhythm in feats both at the plate and in the field that have made him truly the heir in his role to no less than Hall of Famers Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle.
In fact, McCartney was so impressed that he recently signed Williams to a publishing deal with his company, one of the largest and most prestigious music publishing firms in the world.
While few young athletes have either the inclination or time to pursue serious study of music, Williams credits his musical side for playing an important part in his baseball success.
Rather, music is something he uses to express more personal feelings.

In yesterday's 10-4 Yankee victory ( box score ), Bernie Williams picked up his 2,000th career hit . Williams is only the seventh Yankee to reach the 2,000 mark. Others include Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Don Mattingly, and Yogi Berra. All of Bernie Baseball's 2,000 hits have come as a Yankee. Williams even remembers the first hit, "Off Gregg Olson. Infield hit, right here at Yankee Stadium. A long time ago, in 1991." Trivia alert - Williams's 2,000th hit came against Jason Jennings. After the record setting in the 4th inning, the Yankee Stadium crowd showed its appreciation. Following the game, Williams said, "That was great. That meant a lot. Obviously I haven't been playing the way I'm capable of so far, and the fact that the fans are very supportive and remember is just great. It was a great feeling." Now Williams can add 2,000 hit club to his resume which includes a jazz album The Yankee victory gave them a series sweep of the Colorado Rockies, something the Mets

Yanks decline 2006 option on Bernie Williams
Outfielder not surprised, doesn't rule out returning to club next season
CLEVELAND - The New York Yankees have decided not to pick up the $15 million club option for next season on Bernie Williams, their steady center fielder on four World Series title teams. The club had until Aug. 1 to exercise their option on the 36-year-old, who signed with the Yankees in 1985. "I've talked to Bernie and I think he's comfortable with it," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "Emotionally, he is fine with it. It is just that the last day of July was the day it had to be done. It was in his contract." Williams wasn't surprised by the move, and he didn't rule out the possibility of returning to the only club he has ever played for. "It's something they felt they had to do," Williams said during batting practice for Tuesday night's game with the Cleveland Indians. "I'm still playing for this team and I'm going to do all I can to help this team win." Williams didn't want to speculate about his future. The Yankees entered the series with Cleveland 2½ games behind first-place Boston in the AL East and two games behind wild-card leading Oakland.

Bernie Williams hits a grand slam in the seventh inning against the Mariners on Monday.
SEATTLE - If Bernie Williams was rusty, he sure didn't show it. Then again, Williams often comes through when the Yankees need him. Williams rallied New York with his 11th career grand slam, and the Yankees beat the Seattle Mariners 6-3 Monday night to extend their winning streak to nine. At 20-19, the Yankees moved over .500 for the first time since they were 3-2 after beating Baltimore on April 9. "We're playing well," manager Joe Torre said. "We're taking walks. We're not overanxious to hit. We're being very patient. Sometimes, it frustrates other teams the same way we were frustrated when we weren't winning games. ALSO ON THIS STORY Yankees-Mariners box score With New York trailing 2-1 in the seventh, J.J. Putz relieved and Williams drove his first pitch just out of reach of center fielder Jeremy Reed, whose glove went over the wall as he crashed into it. "Pressure situations are really what the game is all about," Williams said. "It gives you so much joy to produce in situations like that, when the game is on the line. You've got to make yourself think that's the situation you want to be in."

Baseball player plays deep on debut record
    By Bill Crandall
If you've ever seen Bernie Williams take off a bit late after a fly ball, you'll have to excuse him he has music in his head. And, besides, it's not like the Gold Glover has had much trouble making up the ground. When he's not roaming centerfield for the New York Yankees, Williams often has a guitar in his hands. And, actually, growing up in Puerto Rico, he thought that music was going to be his calling, until his knack for hitting a baseball got in the way. Now, after winning four World Series, Bernie Williams, the jazz guitarist with the help of an all-star cast of session musicians, including keyboardist David Sancious, drummer Kenny Aronoff and bassist T-Bone Wolk makes his recording debut with The Journey Within . The title is an apt one, as it's a glimpse inside one of sports' quietest figures . . . one who's a bit of a throwback to another Yankee centerfielder.

Bombers not so hot Bats, then bullpen, wilt vs. Twins BY ANTHONY McCARRON
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Bernie Williams grimaces as potential game-tying homer in eighth sails foul. Al Leiter called them "MacGyver moments," those times when he had gotten himself into a fix and needed to make a pitch. Leiter sweated through five perilous innings last night, but he managed enough magic to allow only one run. Unfortunately for the Yankees, he must have used up all the good karma in keeping them close. Perhaps that's why Bernie Williams' would-be game-tying homer landed about 10 feet wide of the right-field foul pole or why Tanyon Sturtze, a reliable reliever most of the season, stumbled in the seventh inning, ruining any chance of a Yankee comeback. It all added up to a 7-3 Yankee loss to the Twins, who got a superlative start from Johan Santana, the kind of outing the Yanks need from their thin staff. Santana, who won the AL Cy Young Award last year, threw seven shutout innings, perhaps giving the Yankees a preview of the kind of pitching they might face should they get to the postseason, and ruined Leiter's first start for the Yanks at the Stadium since April 14, 1989, also against the Twins. The Yankees' modest two-game winning streak ended, and they have lost four of their last six games. The Red Sox beat Tampa Bay, so the Yanks are now two games out of first place in the AL East.

Bernie's arm for birds Injury helps Jays run wild on him BY ROGER RUBIN
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Bernie Williams slams bat after popping up, and day in center field isn't much more enjoyable. It was not a deep drive; rather, Bernie Williams had to come in to get under Gregg Zaun's seventh-inning floater to center. And when Williams corraled it, something happened that few expected: Eric Hinske tagged up at third and dashed for the plate. Joe Torre didn't think it had been deep enough to get the Toronto first baseman in. Hinske himself expected a close play at the plate and probably a collision with catcher Jorge Posada. Neither was right. Hinske scored standing up, shortly after Williams' throw reached cutoff man Tino Martinez behind the pitcher's mound. "I was surprised there wasn't a play, because I'd made up my mind I wasn't going to slide," Hinske said. Opponents taking the extra base on Williams' arm is nothing new. It was a key part of the Angels' strategy in ousting the Yankees in the 2002 playoffs. But the situation looked worse yesterday in the Yankees' loss to the Blue Jays.

Main October 05, 2003 Bernie's Brain Jack Curry in the NY Times offers a look into the head of Bernie Williams
In many ways, Williams, who has been an instrumental part of four World Series teams, symbolizes this team. He is still a formidable player, but he has some faults. The Yankees are still a formidable team, but they have some faults. And this postseason is when Williams and the Yankees will determine just how formidable or just how flawed they are.
A big decision for the Yankees this off-season is whether Bernie continues to play in centerfield. The simplest thing would be to switch Williams and Matsui, but I can also envision scenarios where Williams is not on the team next year. (Redirected from Bernie Williams (born 1968) Bernab© "Bernie" Figueroa Williams (born September 13 in San Juan Puerto Rico ) is a center fielder in Major League Baseball who was one of the top outfielders from the late 1990s to the early 2000s. Known for his keen batting eye and consistency, Williams has played his entire career ( -present) with the New York Yankees As a young man growing up in Puerto Rico Williams developed strong interests in baseball and classical guitar. He was also active in track and field, winning 4 gold medals at an international meet at the age of 15. He was one of the world's best 400-meter runners for his age. In choosing his career path, Williams decided that his musical interests would not fade with time as his baseball abilities perhaps would and ultimately decided to take up professional baseball. On his seventeenth birthday, September 13 1985, he signed with the New York Yankees Playing for the Yankee's Double-A team in Albany , he continued to develop his skills - particularly in the coveted area of switch hitting. Although viewed as a great prospect by the Yankee's management, his rise to the majors was delayed by the solid outfield that the major league team had developed in the early 1990s; an outfield filled by the popular

Baseball Fever American League New York Yankees PDA View Full Version : Combs, Mantle, DiMaggio, Williams 05-09-2003, 09:33 AM Reading the Berra, Dickey, Howard, Munson thread got me wondering if there has ever been such an amazing accumulation of talent at one position for one club. Then I thought, centerfield for the Yanks Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Earle Combs, Bernie Williams.
With that in mind how would you rate this crop? Does anyone else deserve inclusion into this group, i.e. Bobby Murcer, Joe Pepitone?
My ranking would go something like this:
    DiMaggio
    Mantle
    Williams
Combs 05-09-2003, 10:16 AM Again, let's wait until Williams is finished with his career. Not like it would matter much in the long run. No matter what kind of numbers he ends up accumulating, the top 2 will always be DiMaggio and Mantle in the fans' eyes. But I will make one prediction about Bernie...his detractors, who seem almost gleeful to point out all the things he can't do (while ignoring all the great things he HAS done), will one day look in centerfield at Yankee Stadium and not see him there, and they will miss his presence. He is the cornerstone of this Yankees team. And it's not unreasonable for him to finish his career with 2500+ hits, 300+ home runs, 1500+ runs scored, 1500 rbi's, and a .300+ batting average. That's a DAMN good career. Captain Cold Nose 05-09-2003, 10:23 AM
