Perfect I’m Not: Boomer on Beer, Brawls, Backaches and Baseball
David Wells with Chris Kreski
William Morrow
Hardcover 432 pages March 2003 A young woman plagued by inner demons gets the opportunity of a lifetime, and a world-weary musician sets out to break down the walls around her heart. But when her life is threatened, he must unlock the secrets of her dark past before it's too late. Click here for more on Shannon Greenland's Laura's Secrets Outspoken Yankee David Wells has drawn a bit of controversy for putting out a book in which he mentions that he pitched his 1998 perfect game hungover and talks about the prevalence of steroid use among major league baseball players. But while sensational and juicy, these revelations are such small parts of Wells’s story that it seems unfair to judge his book solely by these tidbits. Perfect I’m Not: Boomer on Beer, Brawls, Backaches and Baseball is a loose, enjoyable chronicle of one of modern baseball’s more engaging and unforgettable personalities. In the book, Wells details not only his long and tangled path in the baseball biz, but also the more personal aspects of his story, including growing up in a female-dominated house with a tough but loving mother whose constant companions were a group of Hell’s Angels.

MORE ABOUT DAVID WELLS
  • Wells is nicknamed "Boomer," probably as a result of the sheer volume of his voice and his habit of speaking his mind. Although he made a trade with teammate Edgar Renteria in May of 2005, Wells usually wears jersey number three in honor of Babe Ruth. With the Yankees, he petitioned the team to allow him to wear that number but, having been long retired by the club, he was denied. In his autobiography, Perfect, I'm Not: Boomer on Beer, Brawls, Backaches, and Baseball , he wrote, "Babe Ruth became my first real hero. He could pitch, he could hit, he could eat seventeen hot dogs and launch a ball five hundred feet. He ate too much. He smoked too much. He drank too much. He rented his hookers by the dozen. What's not to love?" In that same autobiography, Wells also stated that he thought Fenway Park should be demolished. However, he later stated that he was referring not to the age of the park but to the difficulty of getting wins there.

    March 2003
by Michael Walls David Wells is a big dumb idiot. Okay? There – I said it. Somebody had to say it. I know this is exactly what every Yankee fan has been thinking since Wells' "tell all" book hit the media, causing a massive flurry of bad press. Even if you haven't read the book (which I haven't, and won't) you can sense that this is just the move of a big dumb idiot.
I'm a Yankee fan. And I use to be a David Wells fan. I mean, what wasn't there to like about David Wells. He's a self-proclaimed Yankee fan, especially of Babe Ruth. He represents the exact opposite of the stereotypical ball player, thus giving ordinary joes the warm fuzzy feeling that if Wells can make it, maybe anyone can. He's a big, burly, teddy bear that likes beer, bikes and heavy metal music. He's always got a big, shit-eating grin on his face, and never takes himself seriously.
Like Wells' perfect game. One of the highlights of my personal Yankees memories. I saw the game live. It was the most amazing moment I'd ever seen. I was jumping around my living room, by myself, as the entire stadium and Yankee team was doing the same. I will never forget that game.

The most successful pitcher this year in baseball (according to number of wins) is Toronto’s David Wells. Driven by one of astrology’s most powerful configurations, Wells excels not just this year, but annually. Portly Pitcher David Wells (born May 20, 1963, in Torrance, California) looms large on the mound. With a barrel chest reminiscent of Babe Ruth and a sumo wrestler’s belly, this hurler for the Toronto Blue Jays can add some body-mass momentum to every baseball he throws. With three birth planets (the taste-oriented Venus , quick-ordering Mercury and the expansive Sun ) in the hungry sign of Taurus , we can expect that Wells has a little more than an average appreciation of food. Are the Blue Jays complaining? Nope. They’re letting this early bird get all the worms he wants. David Wells accumulates wins faster than any other pitcher in major league baseball this year. And it’s not just this year. He’s been perennially good—no, he’s been great throughout his career. Duration in any sport indicates discipline, a strong work ethic and inexhaustible energy. That sounds like David Wells’ horoscope.

Morrow; $29.95; 415 pp. IN the late 1980s Larry Dierker, between his pitching and managing days with the Houston Astros, wrote a sports column for this newspaper. He asked Yogi Berra, who was an Astros coach, how his first book was doing. "Don't know," Yogi replied. "I haven't read it yet." David Wells, a huge (6 feet 4), beefy (225 pounds), seasoned (he's 40) and narcissistic (read this book) left-handed pitcher for the Yankees, did not even read his book's galley proofs, which were widely distributed to the media several weeks before its mid-March publication. That oversight cost him not only a $100,000 fine from his team, which he can well afford, but also perhaps something less tangible but more vital respect. Home About CMC Admission Academics ... Giving to CMC A Hero Remembered Longtime CMS coach David Wells is eulogized for his heroism, and for his commitment to sports and family By Alissa Sandford These and other memories of the former athletic director and head men's basketball coach at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, were shared with family, friends, and members of the community on Saturday, July 14 at memorial services for Wells, 50, who died earlier this month in Mesa, Ariz. He is survived by his wife, Jodie Burton (head women's basketball coach for CMS); three sons, John, Todd, and Michael; his father and stepmother, John F. and Lois Wells of Sonoma, Calif.; and hundreds of student athletes who competed with, for, and against Wells during his 32 years with CMS athletics. "And maybe (that loss) was fitting because David had lost his own battle while he was with us," Edwards said of Wells' six-year battle with cancer. Guest musician George Allan, on bagpipe, led family and friends in a recessional to the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum, where reception guests reminisced and enjoyed David Wells' favorite Motown hits. After his tracheotomy, Wells wrote on a yellow notepad, as his trademark voice failed. Tim Wells recounted how once during a cancer support group meeting, David had asked a member to read something he had written. It said: "I just had one of the most wonderful moments of my life, standing on the ladder and cutting down the net with my wife."
