Wells has plenty in reserve
July 16, 2005 Suppose Curt Schilling's right ankle doesn't fully recover this season. Suppose Schilling can't make it back to anchor the Red Sox' starting rotation for the Division Series (you're not still worried about the Yankees after last night's demonstration, are you?). Who gets the ball for the first game of the playoffs? David Wells, that's who. Boomer had an eventful night. Getting ready for his 16th start of the season, he learned that he'd been suspended six games for making contact with a couple of umpires when he got tossed in a game against the Blue Jays at Fenway July 2. He appealed the penalty, then pitched seven rocking-chair innings of a preposterous, 17-1 blowout victory to improve his record to 7-5. The Sox have scored 17 against the Yankees twice this season. So far. Wells was in no mood to discuss his suspension before last night's game and barked at a reporter looking for commentary after news of his suspension was released. Conspiracy theorists held that Major League Baseball timed the news in an effort to rattle Wells on the day of his start, but anybody who's been around Boomer would certainly dispute that notion. ''Knowing David, this would just tick him off and make him pitch better," said Red Sox CEO Larry Lucchino.

Not exactly an idiotic move
December 11, 2004 ANAHEIM, Calif. This should give pause to anyone who thought the Red Sox might be interested in toning down their image as idiots: They came to terms with David Wells on a two-year contract late last night. ADVERTISEMENT You say the Sox did shots before a playoff game? Wells invoked the wrath of the Yankees, and incurred a $100,000 fine, when he claimed in his autobiography that he'd pitched a perfect game after partying all night, ``half drunk and . . . with a raging hangover.'' David Letterman cracked that after that game, Wells drank 27 Heinekens to celebrate. Ancient history, you say? Well, yes, the incident in question took place in 1998, but two years ago, Wells was punched out in a New York diner in the wee hours of the morning, and last season, he went on the disabled list after severing a tendon in his nonpitching hand and taking stitches, an injury that occurred, he claimed, when he tripped over a barstool in his kitchen while carrying a wineglass. Wells does score points for self-awareness in choosing the title of his autobiography: ``Perfect I'm Not . . .'' And except for the times he let himself get woefully out of shape - and the Yankees will always wonder what would have happened in the 2003 World Series against the Marlins if an overweight Wells hadn't curtailed his Game 5 start because of back spasms - no one has ever questioned Wells's ability to pitch.

The strong are outlasting the weak. At the same time, intangible elements about the baseball season begin to take their toll. now he wasn't “half-drunk'' when he pitched a perfect game against Minnesota in 1998. The pitcher was hit hard in his first two exhibition starts, causing the team to wonder whether he was preoccupied by reaction to the book.
David Wells was “half-drunk'' when he pitched a perfect game for the New York Yankees in 1998. In an upcoming autobiography, the New York Yankees pitcher recounts getting drunk at a “Saturday Night Live'' cast party that ended in the early hours of the day he pitched against Minnesota. ``As of this writing, 15 men in the history of organized baseball have ever thrown a perfect game,'' he writes in galleys of the book. “Only one of those men did it half-drunk, with bloodshot eyes, monster breath and a raging, skull-rattling hangover. That would be me.'' Wells told the New York Post, another News Corp. company, that he had three hours of sleep that morning, but in the book he writes about his son waking him at 6 a.m., an hour after he went to bed drunk. Wells said that before he took the mound against the Twins, he fortified himself with caffeine and aspirin.
Wells was always popular with Yankees fans for his big-game pitching he was 5-0 in the postseason and also threw a perfect game his appreciation of Yankees tradition and his large living. The left-hander broke his pitching hand in January 1997 in a street fight outside a bar during the week of his mother's wake. He later got into a clubhouse shouting match with Steinbrenner and reportedly threatened to knock out the owner.

Hammerin Hank 09-17-2003, 12:01 AM I'd honestly absolutely HATE to see this guy in the HoF but looking at what he's done he's rather difficult to ignore. I should also say here that in my opinion it isn't enough, just so I don't receive unwarranted criticism.

And he has 2 world series rings (even if they were bought). Captain Cold Nose 09-17-2003, 04:42 AM There are dozens of pitchers with better numbers who are not in the Hall of Fame. He shouldn't make it beyond one year on the ballot.

Baseball Fever National League San Diego Padres PDA View Full Version : David Wells to the Friars Steven Bryant 12-31-2003, 01:05 PM It looks as if the Padres are going to sign David Wells. While I'd have preferred Maddox, I think Wells is a good pickup especially at the bargain price they are getting him for. Between $1.25 million and $1.5 million, with incentives making the contract worth up to $7 million. If he can last the year, and with the Padres improved lineup the Padres should do pretty good this season.
Steve yellowdog 12-31-2003, 01:12 PM I would have preferred Maddux also but apparently he was asking for more money and years than the Pads were willing to commit. Probably a wise move on their part.
Evidently Maddux and Boros didn't learn anything from last year when they over estimated his worth. 12-31-2003, 02:19 PM No biggie. IMO, he would have been a liability instead of an asset in 2004. I'm sure George will have him replaced with a more competent pitcher. The Commissioner 12-31-2003, 06:19 PM Is this necessarily an either/situation though? Just becasue they signed Wells why won't they still attempt to acquire Maddux?

Gabe Kapler injured. I can't say that I've ever seen someone injured on a home run trot. Achilles tendon, OUCH. Again going to show that whether a player looks fit may not relate to his tendency for injury. Or sheer bad luck. Next time I'd prefer a home run trot rather than running hard around the bases. Screw appearing bush league.
Kevin Millar now becomes Trot Nixon's regular platoon partner? Boy the number of twists and turns this season's taken is strange.
Otherwise, this is one of those nice Sox wins that you just take for granted. Offense from Ortiz, natch. Was there any doubt that he would one day set the home run record for DHs? Well, there you go.
In my current MVP Baseball game, David Wells is pitching for the Sox with a .500 record even though he has a sub-1.00 ERA. In real life, he's had a lot more wins for the Sox without pitching for the Cy, and I'll take that, thanks. That curveball motion of his has such an easy motion when it's working.

David Wells suspended 6 games
WebPosted Fri, 15 Jul 2005 16:51:49 EDT CBC Sports Boston Red Sox pi tcher David Wells was slapped with a six-game suspension by Major League Baseball on Friday. Boston's David Wells received a six-game suspension on Friday. (CP File Photo) The suspension came after Wells made contact with umpires Chris Guccione and Angel Hernandez during a home game against Toronto on July 2 at Fenway Park. Wells was also fined an undisclosed amount for the incident. Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Wells would appeal, allowing him to start Friday night's game against the New York Yankees. "Obviously, he'll appeal it," Francona said. "He's going to pitch [Friday]. It doesn't affect that."

That pretty much tells you everything you need to know." - Joe Torre. In his recently published autobiography, Perfect, I'm Not: Boomer on Beer, Brawls, Backaches, and Baseball , David Wells, the portly pitcher for the New York Yankees writes, " Babe Ruth became my first real hero. He could pitch, he could hit, he could eat seventeen hot dogs and launch a ball five hundred feet. He ate too much. He smoked too much. He drank too much. He rented his hookers by the dozen. What’s not to love?" The same might be said about our newest inductee to the Heavyweight Hall of Fame. His Southern California upbringing introduced "Boomer" (a nickname given to him because of the sheer volume of his voice) to a world of pleasures that he enjoys to this day— booze, broads and baseball. Early on it was obvious to most observers that Boomer was destined to be a great major league hurler. He hurled things other than baseballs as well, make no mistake, mainly beer. Boomer is, was and hopefully always will be a master carouser. He was arrested in Chicago for mouthing off to a cop. He was involved in a Brawl in a New York diner. He has even alluded to the fact that was suffering the after effects of a New York night out when he pitched his legendary Perfect Game against the Minnesota Twins in 1998.
