1999 Post-Season Review Atlanta Braves

Capsule Summary
Projected Actual Runs for 772 840 Runs allowed 614 661 Run margin 158 179 Wins 96 103 Pythagorean Wins 99 100 Placement 1st 1st The Braves were once again the favorites to win the division, and that they did, with a few more victories than projected. Scoring was way up in the NL this year, with the average team racking up 65 more runs than the year before, and the Braves were in step with those increases on both sides of the ball. The offense dropped from 4th to 7th in the league in runs from 1998 to 1999, and while their pitching was again the best in the league, the rest of the division and the league did some catching up this year. The Braves did a good job of patching up the weak spots and covering for the injuries, but they need an infusion of young talent soon to maintain the dynasty. Fortunately for Braves fans, the farm system looks to be in good shape, and ownership has been willing to spend to get free agent help where the farm system didn't provide a solution.

1998 Post-Season Review Atlanta Braves
By Tom Ruane
December 11, 1998 This article takes a look at how the Atlanta Braves did in the 1998 season relative to pre-season expectations. For an overview of the approach used in this review, and a definition of some of the key terms and statistics, please see the overview page called 1998 Team-by-Team Performance Reviews
Capsule Summary
Projected Actual Runs for 800 826 Runs allowed 582 581 Run Margin 218 245 Wins 104 106 Pythagorean wins 106 108 Placement 1st 1st We expected the Braves to tie the best record in franchise history and they ended up topping that mark by two games. Atlanta prepared for the season by letting their All-Star centerfielder walk and by replacing their 34 year-old first baseman with one more than two years older. While many of us questioned the wisdom of some of their moves, we didn't have any doubts about the Braves' starting rotation and the core of their offense.
Key Position Players
The Braves had a slightly more potent offense than anticipated. Much of this was due to the unexpected success of Andres Galarraga, outstanding production from their catchers, the rapid progress of Andruw Jones, and another fine season from Chipper Jones. On the other hand, they got very little production from their second basemen and a disappointing season out of Michael Tucker.

And it's ONE, TWO, THREE strikes you're out with Sega's latest ball game. by Craig Harris July 24, 2000 - I love baseball. Always have, always will. The smell of the peanuts, the taste of the hot dogs, and the sounds of exuberant fans are some of the most heartfelt signs of Summer. Late-inning games on a Sunday afternoon, the suicide squeeze, a sac-fly to left field, a scorching double down the right field line; all of these exciting and not so exciting aspects of the game of baseball are what makes the contest great. Baseball is in and of itself, a thousand games inside of one. Poetry in motion. An athletic work of art. So you could only imagine that when Sega Sports first announced a return to their classic diamond series with the Dreamcast release of World Series Baseball 2K1 , that the passion I had for my favorite sport grew that much larger. Weiss went on to win the Rookie of the Year award in 1988, the third straight Oakland player to do so, as the A's won the AL pennant. Known primarily for his steady fielding, he made a costly error in Game Four of the World Series , letting in a run in the third inning when Mike Davis 's liner went off his glove in a game the A's lost 4-3 to the Dodgers. After hitting .250 in 1988, his average plummeted in 1989.

Pre-Majors Highlights: Played at the University of North Carolina. Scouting Report 2000 Season Injuries limited Walt Weiss to 192 at-bats last year, his lowest total since 1991. Weiss' strained hamstring in May, sprained thumb in June and strained knee ligament in July and August meant rookie Rafael Furcal saw most of the activity at shortstop for the Braves. Weiss had difficulty getting into a groove at the plate last year. Despite his minimal power, he remains a capable offensive producer while hitting in the difficult eighth slot in the lineup. His calling card remains his glove, which is one of the steadiest in the majors. He has an uncanny ability to anticipate plays and make strong, accurate throws. Weiss is a smart baserunner who compensates for average speed with his knowledge on the basepaths. 2001 Outlook An inability to stay healthy and the loss of a step on defense left Weiss contemplating retirement at the end of last season. He's a free agent, and Atlanta appears set with Furcal at shortstop, provided a high-profile acquisition isn't made. That acquisition will not be Weiss, who should expect nothing more than a part-time role with another team.

A look at the division and its leaders as Disneyland approaches 50 years Wednesday, June 15, 2005
By Mark Goldhaber, staff writer That's what Walt Disney told Fletcher Markle about Disneyland in an interview back in 1963, eight years after Disneyland opened and eight years before Walt Disney World would open. Indeed, one wonders what Walt would have thought of his company's theme park division today, just over a month from Disneyland's 50th birthday. The division was responsible for over 25% of both Disney's total revenues and operating income for the 2004 fiscal year, despite the drag of capital expenditures at Disneyland Resort Paris and the yet-to-open Hong Kong Disneyland. So let's take a closer look some of the key players in the division.
Jay Rasulo
Domestic enterprises
Walt Disney World President Allen R. (Al) Weiss has been at the resort almost since it opened. Weiss started working at Walt Disney World in 1972, fresh out of high school, at a wage of $2.50 per hour. Since then, he's held over 20 different positions on his way to his current post. The president of Disney Cruise Line is Thomas M. (Tom) McAlpin, who took over in September, 2004. McAlpin has been with Disney Cruise Line since its inception, when he was hired as vice president of finance and chief financial officer. He was involved in many of the major early events in the Line's life, including development of the company's original business plan and the negotiation and purchase of both ships and Disney's private island, Castaway Cay. McAlpin reports to Al Weiss.
