"Charity Challenge with Propecia" ATLANTA, July 11, 2000 In the final play at home plate, Atlanta shortstop Walt Weiss got the sign of victory from the umpire when seven professional baseball players gathered on all-star day and tipped their caps to reveal the winner of the "Charity Challenge with Propecia". Weiss, along with fellow baseball players Sandy Alomar, Jr., Gary Gaetti, Todd Greene, Stan Javier, Bret Saberhagen and John Smoltz, announced on last year’s all-star day that they would take Propecia (finasteride) for one year to see who would have the best response in regrowing or maintaining hair, and to raise money for their selected charities. Propecia is the only FDA-approved pill to treat certain types of male pattern hair loss.

History
The Rookie of the Year Award was originated in 1940 by the Chicago chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWA), which presented a single award for the major leagues. The BBWA took over the award in 1947. Since 1949, there has been a Rookie of the Year Award for each league. Voters were allowed to decide which players should be considered rookies until 1957, when the BBWA established definite criteria. The criteria have changed several times since then. Currently, a player is considered a rookie if he hasn't accumulated more than 130 at-bats, 50 innings pitched, or 45 days on a major league roster before Sept. 1 of any previous season. (That's the cutoff date because, on Sept. 1, the roster limit is increased from 25 to 40.) In 1946, The Sporting News established its own Rookie of the Year award. For the first two years and again in 1950, a single award was given for all of major-league baseball. In 1949 and since 1951, TSN has given an award to a player from each league. Pitchers were originally eligible for The Sporting News award, as they are for the BWAA award. In 1963, TSN established a separate

Four Tar Heels Named To ACC 50 Baseball Team
Bankhead, Bradley, Surhoff and Weiss all honored for outstanding careers. Sept. 24, 2002 Four former University of North Carolina baseball players were named to the Atlantic Coast Conference's 50th anniversary team, which was announced today by ACC commissioner John Swofford. The 52-member team was voted on by the nine league institutions as decided by the league's 50th Anniversary Committee. Scott Bankhead, Scott Bradley, B.J. Surhoff and Walt Weiss were Carolina's honorees on the team. "These four players certainly distinguished themselves with outstanding careers here at Carolina," said UNC head coach Mike Fox . "They have each made a tremendous contribution to Carolina baseball and to the game of baseball in general and I couldn't be happier for them. Their success, not only here in college but in Major League Baseball, speaks to their character, work ethic and commitment to the game." Bankhead played for five teams over 10 seasons in MLB and is now the owner and director of the North Carolina Baseball Academy in Greensboro. Bradley, who was in the big-leagues from 1984-92 is now the head coach at Princeton, Weiss moved into an administrative position with the Colorado Rockies after a 14-year professional career and Surhoff is in his 16th season in Major League Baseball. Currently on the injured list of the Atlanta Braves, Surhoff is a .281 career hitter in the majors.

Fantasy Baseball: Ten tips to a successful draft: #9 and #10 by: Jamey Codding Pg 1 of 2 Opening Day is Sunday, March 30, meaning it's time to get ready for your fantasy baseball drafts. Hopefully, Jamey Codding's 10 draft-day tips will help kick-start your preparation. Tip #9: Doh! Don't be a Homer How many times have you seen someone in your draft select a bunch players from one team? Maybe he starts out with, say, Miquel Tejada, Barry Zito, Eric Chavez and Mark Mulder in the opening rounds, which isn't bad considering all four players are near the top of their respective positions. But then he continues on this Oakland trend, getting Erubiel Durazo, Jermaine Dye and Ted Lilly before really screwing up with Terrence Long, Chris Singleton, Eric Hiljus, Ramon Hernandez and Scott Hatteberg. Before long, everybody else in your league, including you, starts harassing the guy, telling him that, "Jose Canseco and Walt Weiss are still available, and I don't think anybody's chosen Carney Lansford yet." Ah yes, making fun of a homer on draft day can be great fun…unless, of course, you're that homer.

The 2000 Atlanta Braves Hitters
Once again, I will be taking a look at each of the Braves' players. Starters (and the platoon starters in left) will go first in each category, then the reserves.
2000 Braves Pitchers

NOTES: I added a statline for each player with 1999 statistics. I had to cut some things to make room – I chose strikeouts, stolen bases, and the team-dependent stats runs and RBI. Sorry.
There are 16 players listed here. The Braves will only carry 14 position players, since they always carry 11 pitchers. I assume that one of the four first basemen listed will not be on the opening day roster. The worst players listed are Guillen and Lockhart, but they kind of need to be on the 25-man because Weiss and Veras get hurt so much. The Braves would be best off dumping both and finding one good-hitting utility infielder who can play both second and short.
CATCHERS
Lopez, Javy (C): Javy was having his best season when it was first interrupted, then ended, by a torn knee ligament. His homers were down (as was the case for several Braves – oddly, 10 of his 11 HR were hit on the road) but he made up for it by hitting .317 and walking more than usual. Some reporters (notably Peter Gammons) seem convinced that he won’t be able to catch, but the complete lack of worry of Javy and the Braves indicate that this isn’t that big of a deal. Offensively, he should be back to his usual level – .280/.350/.530 – and to being one of the four or five best catchers in baseball. He’s also very underrated defensively. My favorite Brave hitter, him or Andruw, which is odd because he doesn’t walk as much as most players I like.

Let us be your stepping stone Sweeping Up the Dregs Dave Paisley Pressed peanut sweepings may a vital ingredient of one of Homer Simpson's favorite snacks, but that doesn't hold true for most of us. Unfortunately, in the grand baseball off-season free agency sweepstakes, that's about all that's left. Juan Gonzalez isn't exactly Manny Ramirez, but he was the nearest thing to a star left in the pool. Then there are those players who weren't free agents but soon will be. Like Johnny Damon. Now, I'm an admirer of Billy Beane in many respects, but trading Ben Grieve and a promising shortstop for one year of Johnny Damon seems a bit steep. Grieve is a better hitter than Damon was at the same age (he's two and a half years younger) and neither of them is much defensively. Sure, Damon is fast, but he's got a weak arm and poor judgment, which makes him just about as useful in the field as the slow-footed, medium-armed Grieve. I thought there must be something in the numbers that would tell me why this was such a great move for Oakland, but I don't see it. Let's see, speedy center fielder turned left fielder with bad judgement and a weak arm. Aha! Oakland finally has that Rickey Henderson clone they've always coveted!

John Rocker and the triumph of the therapeutic Braves Answer Questions About Rocker
New York Times
January 9, 2000 By The Associated Press KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) The Atlanta Braves came Sunday to sign autographs. Instead, they wound up answering questions about John Rocker. Outfielder Andruw Jones, shortstop Walt Weiss and manager Bobby Cox were among those taking part in the promotion at the Braves' spring training site, Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. ``It's disappointing,'' Jones said of Rocker's remarks. ``But I lived with Rocker for one year and he always was kind of crazy, but not to say stuff like that. I don't know if it came from his heart, or it came from his head or just stupidness.'' Rocker told Sports Illustrated he would never play for a New York team because he didn't want to ride a train ``next to some queer with AIDS.'' He also said, ``I'm not a very big fan of foreigners. ... How the hell did they get in this country?'' He called a black teammate a ``fat monkey,'' mocked the driving skills of Asian women and insulted single mothers. Rocker apologized for the remarks published last month and said he was not a racist.

Baseball and Bash Brothers Break up Winter Monotony
The Super Bowl is over. The NHL is locked out. The Hoya Five are off for the week. Pitchers and catchers don’t report for another 10 days. As my roommate JoJo says, “I’d rather die than watch an entire regular-season professional basketball game.” By the way, the Bucks just dropped 78 on the Celtics. In the first half. So this is what I’m reduced to. I’m sitting in my apartment, watching a recap of the 1989 World Cup qualifying match between the U.S. and Trinidad on ESPN2. The most interesting part of the telecast is noticing that every member of the 1989 U.S. national soccer team sported a rattail. Come to think of it, most of the kids in my kindergarten class in 1989 had rattails as well. Maybe it was just the era. Back in 1989, I and the other boys in my class would pass our time — when we weren’t napping or hitting each other over the head with building blocks — arguing about baseball. We talked about the Red Sox some, but, ashamed as I am to say it now, most of our arguments centered on a group of players across the country, far away from the hometown team. Very few, if any, of us had ESPN at the time. We couldn’t watch important baseball games from across the country — not to mention World Cup qualifying matches. Most of us had bedtimes that came earlier than the end of your average nine-inning game.
