History of the World Series - 1989 The on-field action was, in fact, mostly devoid of excitement. And yet the 1989 World Series the first all-Bay Area classic may well rank as the most unforgettable Series ever. Game 1, though, was little more than a showcase event for A's ace righthander Dave Stewart, who shut out San Francisco on five hits, walked only one batter and struck out six on the way to a 5-0 triumph in Oakland. The A's struck for three second-inning runs against Scott Garrelts, the National League leader in earned-run average in 1989 with a 2.28 figure, and then got bases-empty home runs in the next two innings from Dave Parker and Walt Weiss. For Weiss, it was a rare show of muscle he had hit only six homers in 247 regular-season games in the majors. The next night, Mike Moore (seven-plus innings) and relievers Rick Honeycutt and Dennis Eckersley combined on a four-hitter and catcher Terry Steinbach lashed a three-run homer off Rick Reuschel. It was another workmanlike effort for Manager Tony La Russa's A's, who wound up 5-1 winners. Ho-hum.

Log in Register Help Jeff Kent-Walt Weiss Memorial Baseball Darwin Awards, V by Mike Carminati Aaron Boone and the Yankees signed a one-year deal for 2004 worth $5.75 M. The deal "contained language saying it would become nonguaranteed if he played basketball." So guess what Boone was doing while he injured himself possibly tearing his ACL and throwing his season in doubt? Couldn't be basketball. Could it? The man could play squash, arena football, or parcheesi, but he has to play the one game that his contract stipulates he can't. This may force the Yankees to play Enrique Wilson or Miguel Cairo at third or, worse yet, actually give the job to erstwhile footballer Drew Henson. Aside from one very big home run, acquiring the free-swinging Boone has been anything but a boon for the Yanks. Oh, and apparently he is a moron on top of it. Like father, like son, I always say. Dates Announced for Future Hall of Fame Weekends
July 27, 2005 A fan shows his support for Eddie Murray at the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in 2003. COOPERSTOWN, NY: Future Hall of Fame Weekends will be held over the final Sunday of each July, beginning in 2006, signaling the first-time in the 66-year history of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum that dates for the annual Induction Ceremony have been set years in advance. Dates for the next five Hall of Fame Weekends are as follows: 2006, July 28-31, with Induction Ceremonies on Sunday, July 30; 2007: July 27-30, with Induction Ceremonies on Sunday, July 29; 2008: July 25-28, with Induction Ceremonies on Sunday, July 27; 2009: July 24-27, with Induction Ceremonies on Sunday, July 26; 2010: July 23-26, with Induction Ceremonies on Sunday, July 25. "Hall of Fame Weekend is a national celebration of baseball, and for the residents and businesses of Cooperstown and central New York State, it's one of the most important weekends of the year," said Dale Petroskey, President of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. "By setting the dates for future Hall of Fame Weekends now, baseball fans nationwide can make their plans to visit Cooperstown, and it also allows those in our own backyard to plan for future years." Inductee classes are announced each spring, as the Baseball Writers' Association of America announces their election results the first or second Tuesday of each January. In odd-ending years, the Hall of Fame's Veterans Committee votes on players, with a vote for managers, umpires and executives taking place every four years. On Tuesday, the Hall of Fame announced plans for a special Negro Leagues election, from which results will be announced in February 2006.

MARK McGWIRE
As a rookie in 1987, Mark McGwire blasted 49 homers, setting a record for freshman. After battling injuries and struggling to find his swing, he burst onto the national stage when he broke Roger Maris's single-season mark for homers in 1998. In the process he rejuvenated his career and opened the way for a spot in the Hall of Fame. Over a four-year stretch in his mid-30s, McGwire clubbed an amazing 245 home runs.

Four weeks from today, probably about 4 minutes after the final out of the season is recorded at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Milwaukee Brewers fans will begin searching for the pilot light underneath the stove. For some fans, a month is too long to wait. Based on the queries during a recent JSOnline.com chat, many fans are anxious for the Lyle Overbay trade talks to rumble into action and the free-agent window shopping to start. Folks are dying to know which holes Brewers general manager Doug Melvin will address first. Will he go after a starting pitcher? Will he acquire a third baseman? Will he take steps to strengthen the team's bench?

Braves' Cox quick to reach for the panic button
Last Updated: Oct. 25, 1999 Baseball Beat Tom Haudricourt Atlanta - Panic had set in before the Atlanta Braves even took the field Sunday. When manager Bobby Cox announced his lineup for Game 2 of the World Series, more than a few eyebrows were raised. Some of those raised eyebrows were in Cox's clubhouse. "It kind of surprised me," rightfielder Brian Jordan admitted after the lineup was posted. "It's unusual in a World Series to change the lineup so dramatically. I know the guys who aren't playing were pretty surprised." Trying to "generate a little offense" after being shackled by New York's "El Duque" Hernandez in Game 1, Cox changed one-third of his lineup. Tossed out were Bret Boone, Walt Weiss and Eddie Perez, who went a combined for 8 in the opener. In their place went Keith Lockhart, Ozzie Guillen and Greg Myers.
