    Born: December 1, 1966
Place of Birth: Maple Ridge, British Columbia
    Major Notes:
    • Larry Walker is still an active major league baseball player. He is considered by many as Canada's best baseball player ever. Walker has played every fielding position in baseball except shortstop. Before joining his Colorado team, he played five seasons for Canada's own Montreal Expos. Primarily known for his batting feats, he has won at least eight Gold Glove awards for his fielding skills. Although coming up with excellent batting and fielding records, he has been prone to injuries. In 1997, Walker was named the National League's Outstanding Player, an honour highly regarded as it is voted upon by the league players. He can also respond in situations where a stolen base may be necessary and is considered an natural base runner. Walker also has the highest career batting average ever for a Colorado Rockies player. Should things go as expected, Walker has potential to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Player in the Spotlight: Larry Walker
    Daniel Paulling
July 16, 2005 At the age of 23, Larry Walker took his first step onto a Major League baseball field. The ground, more commonly known as Astroturf, had been very unforgiving to players in the past. Andre Dawson, former Expo great, played the beginning of his career on the very same field, his knees degrading past the point of bad. He finished his career at Wrigley Field wondering what his career could have been if he was here the whole time.
Larry Walker feels the same way.
"Man oh man, what would have happened if I hadn't gotten hurt? It drove me nuts, all the breaking and tearing," Walker said. "The year of my second batting title, I couldn't even straighten out my elbow. I had to shorten my swing, lost some of my power and hit singles. I had major reconstructive surgery on my knee in 1988, and 17 years later it still hurts.''
"We had to tell him he had to stop running into walls, his hockey-style of play,'' former teammate Steve Reed said. "He played a lot of times when he shouldn't have.''

The Cardinals Add Walker to an Already Potent Offense
    by Jeff Reppert

Just what exactly do the experts know anyhow?
The St. Louis Cardinals should be in third place, toiling in mediocrity, struggling with a less-than-proven rotation and trailing the mighty Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs. What a difference 110 games make.
    offensive
    third
stint with the Redbirds and has continued to hit at a startling .300+ clip after spending the first few months in AAA Memphis and pounding his way out of the minor leagues (again).
So as the Cardinals sit 11.5 games up on the Cubs with their surprising record of 72-38, maybe Marquis, Carpenter, Matt Morris, Woody Williams and Jeff Suppan are still largely considered a group of unreliable or unproven starters, but consider this: Did Jarrod Washburn, Kevin Appier, Ramon Ortiz, John Lackey and Aaron Sele look like world-beaters in 2002?

Larry Walker is a three-time batting champion and won the MVP award in 1997 with Colorado.
TORONTO - Larry Walker might retire after this season, citing age and injuries. The 38-year-old Canadian entered the St. Louis Cardinals' game at Toronto on Monday night hitting just .249 with five homers and 23 RBIs. "A lot of people say you know when your time is up. I had an inclination last year that my time was up. I just decided to play this year and see what happens," Walker said. "It's a grind. The age and the surgeries that I've had are what's pushing me back, eight surgeries and a reconstructed knee. Father time is creeping on me, and I realize that." Walker said he'll retire for sure if the Cardinals win the World Series. He'll also consider moving to an American League team and becoming a designated hitter. "I think my heart will still be there, but my body is saying, 'Come on buddy,"' Walker said.

ST. LOUIS - Larry Walker dreaded the cortisone shot to his ailing neck, the long needle drilling into his spine from a spot near the collarbone. He loved the results. Fortified by the shot two days earlier, Walker returned to the St. Louis Cardinals' lineup after a five-game absence Wednesday night and hit two-run homers his first two times up in an 11-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. "It was just good to be back in the lineup after sitting and watching a lot of the games," Walker said. "I was happy to be out there and was just fortunate to be able to contribute." Matt Morris worked seven sharp innings, rebounding from his only loss of the year after an 8-0 start, to help the Cardinals win for the fourth time in five games. The NL Central leaders, who also got homers from Reggie Sanders and Jim Edmonds, are 21-8 against the Reds since the start of 2004. At 49-28, they're 21 games above .500 for the second time this season.

St. Marys Bilesky, a grass roots legend who was inducted in 1984 along with Charles Bronfman, Jack Graney, Claude Raymond, and Goody Rosen, brought an 11-year-old Bay and his undefeated team (42-0) from Trail, BC, to the 1990 Little League World Series in Williamsport, where they lost in the foreign finals to Taiwan. Bilesky described Bay as a youngster as a "chip off the old block" - he coached Bay's father Dave as well - "a speedy, scrappy crouch hitter who always played hard." A pair of well-qualified National Team players, Women's Team MVP Melanie Harwood and Olympian Peter Orr, led the internet voting poll conducted on the Hall's website baseballhalloffame.ca that was presented to the panel as part of the decision-making process. Others receiving strong consideration were Rich Harden, Corey Koskie, Matt Stairs, Paul Quantrill and Shawn Hill. Jason Bay, the first Canadian to be named National League Rookie of the Year, compiled a Pittsburgh Pirates and Canadian rookie record with 26 homeruns along with 82 RBI, a .282 batting average and .550 slugging percentage. The stats are even more staggering considering that the 26-year-old did all that in just 120 games, as he missed Spring Training and the first month of the season due to a shoulder injury. He was the lone unanimous selection to the Topps Rookie All-Star Team picked by MLB managers. He also was named Sporting News Rookie of the Year and Players Choice NL Rookie of the Year.

"But it is awesome to be given this award when there are so many great Canadians now contributing at the major league level. The best thing that could come of this is that more Canadian kids will sign up to play ball next year." Moncton, NB's Rheal Cormier, who had a perfect 8-0 season and a career best 1.70 ERA in 65 appearances with the Phillies, finished second in the voting. Placing third was New Westminster, BC's Justin Morneau, who made his major league debut with the Minnesota Twins but was more noted for his team-leading five homeruns when Team Canada won an Olympic berth in November. Rounding out the top five were Port Hope, ON's Paul Quantrill, who appeared in a personal best 89 games and recorded the lowest ERA (1.75) of his career for the Dodgers, and Anola, MB's Corey Koskie, who batted .292 for the Twins and finished second in the American League in fielding percentage for third basemen. Also receiving votes were Matt Stairs, Larry Walker, Aaron Guiel, Rich Harden, Simon Pond, Stubby Clapp, Rob Butler, Chris Mears, Erik Bedard, "Team Canada", Ian Choy and Cherie Piper.
