According to the his batting proficiency, honus wagner is the 13 most proficient honus wagner emerges as the 10 best defensive shortstop in baseball
http://baseballguru.com/articles/analysismikehoban02.html
Can ARod Catch Honus? Adapted from (Baseball Concepts:2003) By Michael Hoban, Ph.D. A new book has reinforced the belief that HonusWagner is the greatest all-around shortstop (hitting and fielding) who ever played the game of baseball at the major league level (Cal Ripken Jr. is a distant second). Wagner played from 1897 to 1917 primarily for the Pittsburgh Pirates. During the 20 th century, he was by far the best hitting shortstop of all time. He won the batting title in the National League eight times during his career and he is #13 among the best hitters of all time. And he is also #10 in fielding among those players who have played shortstop in the major leagues for an extended period of time (he played 1887 games at the position). These facts (among many others) are established in by Michael Hoban, Ph.D., a professor of mathematics and a serious baseball researcher. Dr. Hoban is a member of SABR (Society for American Baseball Research) and the author of (McFarland: 2000(. Add to that the fact that Honus had his best hitting season at the age of 34 in 1908 and his best defensive season at the age of 38 in 1912 and you realize what a special talent he was.

Shelly Anderson: Honus Wagner's granddaughter treasures her memories
Friday, April 29, 2005 By Shelly Anderson, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
One hundred years ago, Honus Wagner was an established star on his way to a Hall of Fame career with the Pirates as arguably the greatest shortstop in baseball history. In 1905, he became the first player to have his signature branded onto a Louisville Slugger bat, according to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Just think what those sticks would bring today. Not much in our society or our sports culture endures so long or remains from the pretechnology age, but the Wagner fascination does. This year marks a half-century since Wagner died, but his fame lives on and is doing quite nicely. No one is more aware of that, more honored by that, than a soft-spoken, thoughtful woman who lives in South Carolina but is back home in Pittsburgh this weekend. "Any time his name is mentioned, I'm grateful," Leslie Wagner Blair said yesterday as she looked forward to throwing out the first pitch at PNC Park tomorrow when the Pirates play the Giants on Honus Wagner Statue Replica Night. "Whenever anyone asks a question or shows some interest in him, or it comes up on a game show, to me, he's still living," Wagner Blair said of her grandfather. "As long as the interest is there, then it just makes me feel it even more."

"Honus" By J. D'Abruzzo Thoughts of retirement entered the Hall of Famer's mind during the 1903 World Series because of a disappointing championship performance that led to catcalls from the crowd. John Peter Wagner, however, stuck around the game long enough to become a Pittsburgh legend. Growing up in Carnegie, Pa., "Honus" Wagner was the only ballplayer Hans Lobert looked up to as an idol while trying to break his way into the big leagues in the late 1890s. Lobert, who played semipro ball in Pittsburgh, even had the opportunity to be a teammate of his hero in 1903 after Pittsburgh owner Barney Dreyfuss brought the 21-year-old to Exposition Park for a tryout in September. Lobert, who later joined the Pirates and sat the bench during the World Series against the Boston Pilgrims, entered the Pittsburgh clubhouse on his first day and got the shock of a lifetime. "I was looking for Fred Clarke, the manager at the time, but at the same time I was looking at guys like Ginger Beaumont, Tommy Leach and Honus Wagner out of the corner of my eye," Lobert once said. "All of the sudden Wagner, of all people, yelled out, 'Hey, kid, come over here and use my locker!' "I told him I was looking for Mr. Clarke, but Honus wouldn't let me wait around and let me use his locker to dress. That was something."

Remembering Honus Wagner
by Dave Studeman April 03, 2004 In 1908, Honus Wagner , one of the greatest players of all time, had one of his best years. He batted .354, with an OBP of .415 and a SLG of .542. He had 201 hits, including 39 doubles, 19 triples and ten home runs. He scored 100 runs and drove in 109. He stole 54 bases and had 308 total bases. Remarkable numbers. But to truly get a sense of just how remarkable these numbers were, take a look at this graph of the number of runs scored per game in each year since 1900:

The Baseball Time Machine: Johnny Wagner
by Steve Treder May 03, 2004 Comparing players across distant eras is the inevitable endeavor of nearly all baseball fans. It's just what we do. Was Walter Johnson better than Roger Clemens ? Was Sandy Koufax as good as Lefty Grove ? Some of us have been known to really get into it: was Dave Eiland as bad as Ralph Miller ? (Though, if you find yourself getting worked up about questions like that last one, it's an indication that you should probably start spending more time with the family.)

Player Profile: Honus Wagner
Name: John Peter "Honus" Wagner
(The Flying Dutchman) shortstop Lived: Career span: Hall of Fame? yes (1936) Primary teams: Pittsburgh Pirates (1900-1917) Best Year: 1908: 201 hits, .354 avg., 53 SB, 109 RBI Rank on Greatest Players list Player notes : Honus Wagner is rightfully regarded as the greatest shortstop to ever play the game. Almost a half a century since his death, he remains as one of the icons of the game, a standard by which greatness is still measured. He won eight batting championships (including six of seven fron 1903 through 1909), and led the league in doubles seven times, in RBI five times, in stolen bases five times, and in extra base hits seven times. He was also an outstanding shortstop, said to throw the ball to first base so hard that the pebbles he had scooped up would arrive at the bag along with the ball. Branch Rickey called him the greatest player he had ever seen. Wagner was also a man of principle, who was said to have turned down a significant increase in salary to jump to the American League because he like Pittsburgh. He also asked that his picture be removed from his 1909 baseball card because the card was distributed by a tobacco company. Some of the cards had already been distributed, however, and the card is now one of the most expensive and famous of the old baseball cards.

Answer
Hi Frank, I'm no expert, but it is priceless. If you are looking for a dollar amount, I would estimate it going for five figures. Not to be biased, having the Gus Suhr autograph with the "Flying Dutchman" makes it a treasure. I have endless memorabilia of my Grandfather's (including many Honus Wagner artifacts, letters, autographs, videos, pictures) and he was very fond of Honus as a mentor and a coach. Most of all, my Grandfather was a role model and one of the best persons I have ever been around, and I was around him a lot. He was the best. Sincerly, Gus Suhr III edit answer
