Wagner at home in Virginia Astros reliever and ex-Ferrum star Billy Wagner headlines this year's Salem-Roanoke Baseball Hall of Fame class.
By RANDY KING
THE ROANOKE TIMES
Unless you were a relative, a friend, a die-hard fan or some savvy autograph hound, you easily could have missed the star inductee of Sunday night's 12th Salem-Roanoke Valley Baseball Hall of Fame ceremony. That's how well Billy Wagner blends into a crowd, especially one of good, ol' Southwest Virginia people, the folks the Houston Astros' star relief pitcher grew up around and still loves to hang around. "Nobody recognizes me as being a ballplayer because I've got this big stature," said Wagner, poking fun at his 5-foot-11, 195-pound frame. "So it's pretty easy for me to be low key. It doesn't matter for me, I'd rather wear boots and blue jeans than wear a nice suit." That said, Wagner didn't mind having to spiff up a little in joining former major-leaguer Leo Burke, former Roanoke Red Sox and Salem Pirates general manager Morris Cregger, former Salem Pirate Doug Nelson, and former Glenvar High School baseball coach Larry Wood as the hall's newest members.

Contact me: kuff - at - offthekuff.com Main November 03, 2003 Astros trade Billy Wagner This is a bit of a shock, but no surprise.
All-Star closer Billy Wagner was traded Monday from the Houston Astros to the Philadelphia Phillies. Philadelphia sent Houston right-hander Brandon Duckworth, and minor league right-handers Taylor Buchholz and Ezequiel Astacio.
There are two numbers in this article that are the keys to why this is a decent trade for the Astros: 32 and 8 million. They are Wagner's age and salary, respectively. The Astros have the younger and cheaper Octavio Dotel to step into the closer role, and the even younger and even cheaper Brad Lidge to step into the setup role. In return, they got some starting pitchers, always a good thing to have. The deal makes good baseball and business sense. The Astros should be a contender next season if they stay healthy (this is not a trivial concern, unfortunately), thanks in part to the organizational myopia in Chicago and St Louis. If they can find a league-average catcher to replace the giant sucking void that Brad Ausmus leaves behind, their lineup will be at least reasonable in all eight spots. (How bad was Ausmus last year? You could credibly claim that prior to the All Star break, when his "bat" finally awoke for the year, Wade Miller was a bigger offensive threat than he was.) They're by no means a juggernaut, and there's always the Jimy Factor to worry about, but they're in decent shape.

2003 Recap:
Billy Wagner had one of the finest years of his career in 2003 with the Houston Astros, saving a career-high in games and posting a sub-2.00 ERA for only the second time in his career. He also struck out over 100 batters for the first time since 1999. However, his career with the Astros was tainted after he lashed out at management for not spending enough after the Astros fell a game short of making the playoffs.
Why YOU SHOULD WATCH HIM IN 2004:
Billy Wagner is exactly what the Philadelphia Phillies need – a bona fide closer. Gone are the days of Jose Mesa and Mike Williams and their 6.00+ ERAs. Wagner will also have a whole new audience with great expectations for him. The overly-critical-at-times Phillies fans will be hoping that Billy Wagner doesn’t turn out like Billy Koch, who came to Chicago from Oakland and lost 10 miles per house off his fastball.

Wagner says Phillies 'ain't got a chance'
Closer laments that team doesn't have enough to win 'right now'
George Widman / AP file
Before Friday's game against Atlanta, Philadelphia closer Billy Wagner refused to back off his comments published in The Philadelphia Inquirer, telling the paper that the Phillies had "no chance" to make the postseason.
PHILADELPHIA - Billy Wagner has little faith he'll be closing games in the postseason for Philadelphia. The outspoken closer just doesn't believe the Phillies are a playoff team. Before Friday's game against Atlanta, Wagner refused to back off his comments published in Friday's edition of The Philadelphia Inquirer, telling the paper that the Phillies had "no chance" to make the postseason. "We ain't got a chance to get there right now," he told the paper. Not surprisingly, those quotes made Wagner the center of a media storm before the game, but he only reiterated his contention that the Phillies just don't know how to win. "I think it's the truth," Wagner said. "The way we're playing now, if anybody's fool enough to think we're a playoff team the way we're playing right now, they're crazy. We haven't played well. It doesn't have anything to do with us not working hard or playing hard. We're not getting it done. No, we're not a playoff team right now."

His deceptive slider looked an awful lot like a fastball, until it broke in front of the plate. Hitters looked out at the slender man glaring at them from the mound and, before he threw a pitch, they felt fear. With the exception of an injury-riddled 2000 season, he owned the ninth inning, and batters knew it.

HONUS WAGNER
The man many consider the best all-around player in baseball history, Honus Wagner escaped the coal mines of Pennsylvania to become a baseball legend. John McGraw said of him: "I believe he could have been the number one player at any position he might have selected." In the 1909 World Series, "The Flying Dutchman" outplayed American League counterpart Ty Cobb as the Pirates won their first championship. Wagner retired with more hits, runs, RBI, doubles, triples, games, and steals than any other National League player.
