ROTISSERIE GAMING
Patrick Davitt - July 1
Roto All Stars
Voting is over and the fans have made their usual idiotic choices for the All Star teams. Fortunately, in this space we can use the numbers to determine the true and deserving All Stars for mid-year 2005. So we have. METHOD Since Roto success is all about players who turn a "profit" by out-earning their projections, we decided our All Stars would have to demonstrate not only excellence, but excellence above and beyond our expectations. So we took all the hitters and pitchers in each league, and compared their year-to-date 5x5 dollar production with HQ's April 1 Player Projections. But we didn't just look for the greatest profit. We added the profit onto the YTD achievement, to capture not only extra value but overall performance. We sorted the results by league and position. Where players qualified at multiple positions, they were slotted in where they could allow the highest possible value at their other positions. Among the pitchers, we arbitrarily took five starters, two closers (projected on April 1 for 20+ Saves) and two middle guys (projected under five Saves and under 80 IP).

And by the time this trade gets accepted and cleared Turnbow will have been picked up by someone else.
Do you really need 5 first basemen? Helton, Dunn, TEx, Huff and Thome all qualify at first base.
smooth Jul 22 2005, 11:12 AM Turnbow is available . . . its a 6 team league so no one has picked him up yet. I only have Thome because someone dropped him and I just stuck him on the DL which doesnt hurt me. I could drop Huff or Dunn for Turnbow if I made this trade. So essentially its Lee, Wagner, Dunn and I get Oswalt, Schilling and Turnbow.

Ferrum College senior catcher Brian Strong took over 50 pitches off Houston Astros' Billy Wagner during practice on Friday, January 26. Wagner, one of the top closers in the National League, was business as usual on the off-season visit to his college turf, giving Strong a taste of The Show. Several friends of Wagner and most of the team watched the grueling session inside Ferrum's new indoor bullpen. Wagner also ran two miles and numerous sprints before giving the team a motivational speech and answering questions from Coach Abe Naff's players.
"When I graduated from high school I was 135 pounds," said Wagner. "Coach Naff was the only coach who gave me the opportunity to play baseball at the college level, and I've always been grateful." Wagner also pushed the student-athletes to study hard. "You can't give more to baseball than you give to your classes. You want people to say that you're a good person and good student, not just a good baseball player," Wagner told them.

Top of the 1st
MVP OR MVH
Last night the losing pitcher for the Blue Jays, Josh Towers, laid it out on the table for all of us to see and consider - David Ortiz doesn’t deserve to be MVP because Ortiz doesn't usually play the field. "They don't go through the grind other guys go through defensively, diving after balls, chasing balls. If you make an error, it might affect you but if you're a DH, you don't go through any of that," Towers said. "You just hit. As good a hitter as he is, and he's one of the best, no question, I could never vote for a guy who doesn't do play defense." Not surprisingly Big Papi disagrees, "I'm just trying to break the rules," Ortiz said. "As soon as they bring my name up they said. `Oh, he's a DH. I don't think he deserves it because he's a DH."' That's fine with me. I never saw anybody win the MVP because they won the Gold Glove and hit .230. You win the MVP because you help your ballclub, you win games whenever your team needs it and because you put up some numbers." How many times have you read in Billy-Ball, “David Ortiz hit a two-run, tiebreaking home run in the 8th inning last night….” Well, the question is not rhetorical. Last night was Ortiz's 11th game-winning home run in the seventh inning or later since joining the Red Sox in 2003 tying Andruw Jones for the most in the majors during that time and his third in the last nine days.

Pitcher Perfect

Why can't anyone throw a baseball faster than 100 mph?
By Noam Scheiber
Posted Friday, April 8, 2005, at 11:38 AM PT
The physics of flamethrowing When baseball's elders swap stories about fireballers, the name that ends the conversation isn't Nolan Ryan or Sandy Koufax. It's one that never appeared on the back of a major-league uniform: Steve Dalkowski. Legend has it that the 5-foot-11-inch, 170-pound lefty threw his fastball well in excess of 100 mph. We don't have an exact number for the same reason Dalkowski, who toiled in the minors in the late 1950s and early 1960s, never made the big leagues: He was too wild to time. When a scout tried to gauge Dalkowski's fastball with a primitive radar gun—a beam of light the width of home plate—the pitcher couldn't hit the target until after his arm got tired. Steve Dalkowski sounds like a genetic freak, but so is anyone who can throw a baseball 90 mph. What he really represents is a blow to the basic notion of human progress. In almost every measurable physical activity, athletes show improvement over time. Jumpers jump higher and farther, and runners and swimmers go faster. Since the late 1950s, the high-jump world record has improved by more than 10 percent, the 100-meter-dash mark has improved by 5 percent, and swimming's best 100-meter freestyle has dipped 12 percent.

One of Lidge's teachers becomes his cheerleader
    By JOSE DE JESUS ORTIZ
KISSIMMEE, FLA. - As Octavio Dotel struggled through the start of last season, hardly any Astros fan could forgive the club for trading Billy Wagner to the Phillies. ADVERTISEMENT The reality of the situation, however, is that the Wagner trade might have been the type of deal that genuinely helps both parties. It freed up the money the Astros used for Andy Pettitte, who in turn lured Roger Clemens. Nobody can deny that the 2004 performance Clemens gave the Astros was a magical ride unlike anything ever seen in Houston. Even Wagner appreciated the ride Clemens and the Astros went on last October. Wagner appears at ease now in his Phillies uniform despite a turbulent season in which he ripped the manager, general manager and athletic trainers in Philadelphia.

Main April 17, 2005 Why Wagner? Why is Billy Wagner starting the 9th inning? Myers only threw 87 pitches. Yes, he had given up consecutive hits to Estrada and Hampton, but Wagner has pitched two days in a row. Giles doubles off the right field wall with one out, then steals third. The Braves have the best threat of the night right now. Update : Chipper Jones strikes out looking. No excuse for not swinging in that situation. Update : Great play by David Bell on a slow roller by Andruw Jones. He cut across in front of the shortstop to get the ball and throw out the batter. If the ball had gotten to Rollins, Andrew would have beat it out. To the bottom of the ninth, still no score. Myers ERA is now 0.44.
