Midgets? Nuns who give massages? Disco Demolition Night? Free vasectomies on Father's Day? If there's one thing Mike Veeck learned from his father and from building a profitable empire of minor league baseball teams, it's this: Fun is good. From: Inc. Magazine, April 2005 Page 116 By: Alan Schwarz Photographs by: Peter Frank Edwards Laugh if you want at Labor Day, when pregnant women get in free. Chuckle at the mascots running bases, the silly gags, the goofy promotions. That's exactly what Mike Veeck wants.

Excerpts from the Book
- The Business of Baseball

(c) 1999-2004 David H. Martinez
Bill James Author The most influential baseball writer in recent times, James is largely responsible for revolutionizing the way people approach baseball statistics. Through his Baseball Abstracts , which he published from 1978 through 1988, James examined and analyzed countless important statistical questions, such as the true value of the stolen base and the importance of walks, and he has introduced new methods of judging ballplayers through the practice of sabermetrics, a term coined by James himself. Among his other body of work, he wrote what I and many others consider the quintessential baseball history book The Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract ; every fan should own a copy.
You could say James is responsible for the explosion in statistics you see during a game: "Batting average on Tuesday afternoons," "Home runs against left-handers in day games after night games," etc. But that would be an injustice to James. In fact, his precedent-setting statistical analyses and general approach to the game have positively influenced directly or indirectly an entire generation of baseball fans and writers, myself included. With original envelope and original St. Louis Browns May 1952 newsletter. One of the most innovative major league baseball owners ever, Veeck takes the time to respond personally to a boy’s autograph request. In full: “Thanks for your recent letter and your good wishes. We also hope to end in the first division this year. / Enclosed are the two autographed pictures [not present] which you requested for your brother and yourself. Sorry I can’t send you the autographed picture of Ned Garver but you might obtain this by writing directly to Ned in care of the ball club. / Certainly hope we will continue to merit your interest.” During his career Veeck owned three teams, the Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Browns, and Chicago White Sox. He was the last owner to buy a baseball franchise without being independently wealthy. Of his teams, the 1948 Indians won the World Series, and the 1959 White Sox won the American League pennant.

RiverDogs REIGN AT RILEY
by: Marlene Biondo
Like many momentous occasions, Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park began with a wish and a prayer. The wish began with principal owner, Mr. Marvin Goldklang, and minority owners Mike Veeck and Bill Murray. The stadium, however, would have been a near impossibility without the support and direction given by Charleston's Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. who was the undeniable celebrity at the baseball stadium's grand opening. The evening opened with a prayer offered by Monsignor Sam R. Miglarese, Vicar General, Diocese of Charleston. Loving God, We Praise you for your glory. Look on us with love as we gather here this evening to dedicate and bless this field of play, a field of dreams for this community.
Bless our Mayor Riley, for whom this field is named, and all those who worked so hard to make this ballpark a place of pride for our community and support for America's national pastime.
Bless all who play here, especially the Charleston RiverDogs and the Citadel Bulldogs, and all of us who use this place as a center of recreation and enjoyment.

populist owners. He inherited his love of the
game from his father, a sportswriter who became
president of the Chicago Cubs. As a teenager, he
planted the ivy in Wrigley Field. Twice owner of the Chicago White Sox, as well as
the Cleveland Indians, the St. Louis Browns, and
the minor league Milwaukee Brewers, Bill Veeck
believed that any team that relied solely on
baseball purists for its patronage would "go out of
business by Mother's Day." With this in mind, Veeck became the “Fan’s Owner.” He created the exploding scoreboard at Comiskey Park, let fans manage his teams, put a shower in the bleachers, started "Bat Day," and gave away 10,000 cupcakes to a single fan. Veeck integrated the American League in 1947, signing Larry Doby and later Satchel Paige to complete the Cleveland team that would win the 1948 World Series. His White Sox won their first pennant in 40 years in 1959. A voracious reader, he wrote three bestsellers, starting in 1962 with his autobiography, Veeck as in Wreck. Veeck was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991. He and his wife, Mary Frances, lived here at 1380 East Madison Park.

Trading Partners
by Matthew Namee April 06, 2004 Over at THT Live last Tuesday , I discussed the trading relationship between Oakland GM Billy Beane and Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi. Ricciardi used to work for Beane in Oakland, and since J.P. was hired by the Blue Jays, the two GMs have made numerous deals. Now that Paul DePodesta, another former Beane assistant, is running the Dodgers , the trading among Beane and his disciples should only increase.

TIME TO SAY GOODBYE As I wrote (and wrote and wrote some more) yesterday’s post-World Series edition, I ended by saying that I would wrap things up today and say goodbye on Monday. I was being selfish. I didn’t want the season to end. But it has and it’s time to go. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh once said, “The art of being a good guest is to know when to leave.” And I realize that I am simply a guest in your lives. You are so gracious to accept me into your electronic homes or your e-businesses each day and for that I am incredibly appreciative. But I fear that if I don’t leave now you might not be as generous with your hospitality next season and yes, I do plan on returning next season. I have two reasons for my confidence in that come next April I’ll be writing on a daily basis once again. The first reason is the game itself. For an explanation of this we open our bible and turn to the Book of Veeck. Bill Veeck tells us “Baseball is almost the only orderly thing in a very unorderly world. If you get three strikes, even the best lawyer in the world can't get you off.”

Since Cooperstown is the nexus of the baseball world, it is fitting that last week a coincidence of baseball karma took place here. First, the Veeck family, led by Mike Veeck, the son of Hall-of-Famer Bill Veeck, baseball’s master showman, was in town. Mike’s daughter, Rebecca, 7, has retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease which leads to blindness. In order to “cram as many visual postcards into her head as possible” before the dark curtain descends, Veeck is taking Rebecca to many sites of beauty and importance. She’ll go to the Grand Canyon and to a Disney theme park. She’ll go to Mexico, and she spent time at Mike’s childhood home. She came to Cooperstown to see her grandfather’s plaque in the Hall of Fame. The Veeck party was accompanied by a famous clown, the actor Bill Murray, who owns part interests with Veeck in five minor league baseball clubs, most notably the St. Paul Saints. Just a couple of days before their visit, Max Patkin, the “Clown Prince of Baseball,” died at the age of 79.
