Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg And Former Met Mo Vaughn Announce Plan To Rehabilitate 300 Units In Two Bronx Housing Developments
City and Federal Housing Agencies Partner with Former New York Met to Improve Bronx Housing As part of $3 Billion Plan to Preserve or Build 65,000 units of Affordable Housing
New York, NY, February 23, 2005
"We're preserving affordable housing for the next generation of New Yorkers," said Mayor Bloomberg. "As we meet our commitment to preserve and build 65,000 units of affordable housing throughout every Borough, we are relying on innovative public/private partnerships to rehabilitate apartments, revitalize neighborhoods and ease our City's urgent demand for affordable housing. It is precedent-setting for the City's housing agency to work with the federal government and a developer to both ensure necessary rehabilitation work for the buildings and plan for long-term affordability for low-income residents. It's a win for the tenants and a win for the City. I want to thank Mo Vaughn for investing in the Bronx." The $28.6 million loan was made through HDC and secured with a letter of credit from Citibank to allow Mo Vaughn and Omni New York LLC to purchase the two properties. Mo Vaughn's Omni New York LLC has earmarked nearly $5 million for rehabilitation of both developments and has worked with HUD, HPD and HDC to ensure that rents for tenants remain affordable under the project-based Section 8 program which is administered by HUD.

Comments Vaughn was embraced by Boston and Red Sox fans? Really? I'll grant that he was accepted but I wouldn't say he was embraced. Indeed, the constant uproar over his dalliances with strippers and the fallout over the DUI thing are evidence that not every fan held Mo Vaughn in the highest regard. Posted by: Edw. at January 29, 2004 10:02 AM I know that I respected the hell out of him as a Yankee fan. The sight of him in the left-handed batters box was downright scary. It's a shame the way his career fell apart. I second Alex's props. Posted by: Cliff at January 29, 2004 10:17 AM I always thought it was a matter of Duquette hating Vaughn and busting his chops by stirring the media frenzy and having private dicks following Mo around. He was determined to get rid of the guy and make him look bad in the process. From a distance, I always thought Vaughn was getting a raw deal from a paranoid and petty GM. Of course, the dude went to strip clubs and even had a DWI too, but isn't that everyone expected from a Babe Ruth guy like that? I didn't know Sox fans held that against Mo. I thought that was a pardonable offense, considering all of his other lovable attributes.

If rehabilitating housing developments were structured like the game of baseball, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and retired New York Mets slugger Mo Vaughn would bat in the two best spots in the order — third and cleanup. The duo took center stage in the community room at the Thessalonica Court Apartments and spoke third and fourth, respectively, about hitting a proverbial "homerun" for two Bronx housing developments. Bloomberg and Vaughn announced a plan in which the former baseball player’s company — Omni New York LLC — will purchase and renovate two apartment developments in Mott Haven, including the Thessalonica Court Apartments, the site of their Wednesday, February 23 press conference. The average rent for each apartment in both developments is $270 per month and will not be increased, Bloomberg and Vaughn told residents at the Thessalonica Court Apartments to cheers.

HEATHCLIFF SLOCUMB
Billy-Ball’s got Heathcliff on the mind again, it hard not to think about this guy. Slocumb pitched from 1990-2000 with the Cubs, Indians, Phillies, Mariners, Cards, Orioles, Padres…and the Boston Red Sox. You can see by the way he moved around that he was always the kind of pitcher that every team said, “Let me have him. We can make him effective.” They were all wrong.
Ironically enough, the team he helped the most, by far, was the Boston Red Sox. The year was 1997 and Slocumb was in his second season with Boston. His record was 0-5, but even good relievers have losing records. His ERA was 5.79. Well, even good relievers occasionally have high ERA’s. The league was batting .312 against. Okay, he was stinking out the joint.
Then came his defining moment. The moment that brought his value to Boston. On July 31, 1997 he was traded to Seattle. Traded for minor leaguers Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek. The rest as they say is history.
The history is becoming dramatic in its impact. Last night, Lowe combined with Rich Garces to shutout the White Sox, 9-0. Lowe is now 7-1 and has won six straight. He struck out seven allowing two singles and two walks over eight innings. It was the Red Sox seventh shutout of the season.

BONDS COMPADRES
Last night’s two homers (as reported in Day @ The Bases) were the 23rd and 24th of the season for Barry Bonds. Not only that they were the 35th and 36th Bonds has hit at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium and gives him 68 against the Padres, the most he has hit against any team. Bonds now has 591 homers on the season. Bonds is second in the NL to Sammy Sosa. Did anybody notice that when Sammy hit home run #26 last week he passed Willie Stargell and Stan Musial into 19th place on the all-time HR list, with 476 career blasts? Pretty neat company, two players Sosa should feel proud to be associated with…as compared to blowhard Bonds. Did you happen to read, “It's not my fault you don't play baseball," Bonds told The Washington Post. "It's not our fault you're not an actor or Bill Gates or anybody else. Nobody is complaining about their salaries, or the owners' salaries. So don't complain about ours. We have the right to make it.” This was on some questions about how well baseball would survive a strike. Bond concluded to The Post, "It's entertainment. It will come back. A lot of companies go on strike, not just baseball. And people still ride the bus.”

No More Vaughn with the Mets
When the New York Mets first tried to sign Mo Vaughn back in 1998-99, I thought it was a great idea. I thought their timing at that time was great. Of course Mo never came to the Mets when they first approached him and having him sign years later showed whenever Mo played. Being a long time Mets fan I am not surprised to learn that there will be no more Mo with the Mets, since the situation with his knees will prevent him from playing in the 2004 baseball season. Last year I went to only a handful a games because once the weather for baseball was good, the Mets were just awful. Hopefully this year the baseball season for the Mets and the weather will be more in sync. Posted by jeff at January 9, 2004 07:02 AM

Hey Jeff, Just discovered your Blog. It took MANY years of being away from NY, but I finally became a Red Sox fan this past year. Baseball in Beantown was just too exciting this year to root for NY teams any more. And of course, I am now a converted Patriots fan...playing in the Siberia Bowl tomorrow night in Foxboro. Soriambi 05-04-03, 07:35 PM Does anyone want the worthless, obese sloth who's taking up my Util slot and doing absolutely nothing? He's hitting close to .200 and he's ALREADY hit 3 HRs! He only strikes out about once every FOUR at bats and can occasionally take two bases on a double or even field a ground ball!!! Just because he can't even come close to getting around on a fastball, or any other kind of pitch for that matter since he's...large, doesn't mean that you shouldn't pick him up!!! The best part of him is that when he's injured, like now, his production BARELY drops from when he's actually playing! Also, you might be able to switch him over to your Fantasy Football team later this year, since he'd be much more at home there. So please, if there's anyone in the market for a worthless, overrated sloth who can barely move, much less swing and shouldn't be playing major league baseball, even as a DH, just let me know. I'd be looking for a quality pitcher in return. :)
I'd even be willing to exchange him for cash, just Paypal me fifty cents, or a simple button for that matter. :)

A Few Head-scratchers and Random Thoughts
By Tom Tippett
May 10, 1999 The early part of the 1999 season has left me scratching my head and wondering "what on earth were they thinking?" more than a few times. Here are a few of those puzzlers along with some random observations about the season to date.
"In left field for Seattle, Brian Hunter"
The Mariners entered the season with more outfielders than they had room for, and all of them Griffey, Buhner, Huskey, and Mabry got off to a good-to-very-good starts. So what's the problem? Well, it seems they've been having trouble finding a "real" leadoff hitter. They tried David Segui, and although he went 7-for-14 in his first series as a leadoff hitter, his career on-base percentage (OBP) is only a little above the league average, and you'd hope that your leadoff hitter would get on base more than that. So I'm not surprised that the team felt that their offense might be more efficient if they went out and acquired a legitimate top-of-the-order guy. But why Brian Hunter? There's no question that he has the speed for the role since 1996, he's averaged 50 steals a year with an excellent 84% success rate. And he's a terrific defensive center fielder. But his career OBP is a rather uninspiring .316 (thirty-three points below Segui's), and there's no way that his steals can make up for the fact that he reaches base at least 50 fewer times per season than you'd expect from a good leadoff hitter. Furthermore, you're taking playing time away from Mabry and Huskey, who have already combined for 8 homers in 1999. That's half as many as Hunter has hit in his entire career.

MO Vaughn, MOst Valuable
By Ben Walker , Associated Press writer
NEW YORK Mo Vaughn posted big numbers early, carrying the Boston Red Sox when there was no one else. Albert Belle poured it on later, after the Cleveland Indians were running away.
So is that why Vaughn won the AL MVP award, or was it because of another factor, one far from the field?
Vaughn beat out Belle for the trophy Thursday in one of the closest elections ever, a vote that called into question whether the Cleveland star's surliness cost him the honor.
Vaughn, considered one of baseball's nice guys, and Belle, regarded by many as Mr. Nasty, tied for the league lead with 126 RBIs. Belle, however, led the majors with 50 home runs in the shortened season and became the first player to get 100 extra-base hits since Stan Musial in 1948.
But Belle has earned a reputation for being uncooperative and downright rude to reporters who do the voting. He is expected to be penalized by major league baseball this month for berating a television reporter during the World Series, although that outburst came after all 28 ballots were returned.
"I guess it really does say something," Vaughn said at a news conference in Boston, held at a center where founded a youth development program. "People are looking at the whole thing and that it's just not numbers."

Baseball voters need to get a reality check
Buddy Thomas, Standard-Times Staff Writer ,
Before you jump on either's bandwagon, answer this question.
You're starting a major league baseball team and you have your pick of either Mo Vaughn or Albert Belle. Which one do you choose?
You take one quick look at the numbers and, unless you're dyslexic, you choose Belle.
Why? Because his numbers are more impressive, which would make him a more valuable commodity.
So after comparing the same numbers, the baseball writers of America chose Vaughn over Belle as the American League's Most Valuable Player.
Why?
Because they looked beyond those numbers and examined the image of both men. And because Mo's a nice guy and Albert's a schmuck, the choice was easy.
But was it fair?
If image plays a role in the selection process, maybe the name of the award should be changed from Most Valuable Player to the Good Guy Award as in good stats, good image. But to say Mo Vaughn is a more valuable player than Belle is just plain ludicrous.
Remember, the title doesn't underline one's value to a team. It says Most Valuable Player, period. And, again, I defy you to find more valuable home run and RBI numbers than those put up by Arrogant Albert.
