In the summer of 1970, Shirley Vaughn began teaching her 2-year-old son the art of hitting a Wiffle Ball. It didn't take long before Maurice Vaughn was swatting the plastic ball. It didn't take long before Leroy and Shirley knew their son's calling would be baseball. "Right from the start, I realized he was a good athlete . . . especially baseball," Leroy Vaughn said. "My wife was teaching him to hit left-handed and he picked it right up. Maurice did everything else right-handed. But he was a natural." Almost three decades later, Maurice Vaughn is among the most feared left-handed hitters in baseball. He also is among the most recognizable personalities in the game.

About this site About Us Contact Us Tip Jar RSS Feed Recent wisdom, gossip and conjecture: From the Strikethree.com newsroom: Can you write or draw? Would you rather put bamboo shoots up your fingernails than read the average sportswriter? You might have a future! Let us be your stepping stone Brothers in Harm Matt Bruce Consider these two batting lines, compiled through the end of June by a pair of teammates: AB R H HR RBI Player A Player B A casual fan might think that each is having an outstanding year. Both are on pace to finish with 30 doubles, 40 home runs, and 120 RBI. Although their traditional "production" numbers are quite similar, one has 13 more hits in 12 fewer at-bats. Those numbers may seem small, but they conceal a much larger difference. Let's add some stats to bring you a fuller picture, shall we? AVG OBP SLG BB SO GDP Player A Player B Batting average and slugging percentage were both derivable from the first table, but actually seeing them computed is useful. The difference in on-base percentage makes the comparison all the more interesting, while the GDP total is something I threw in for fun.

7.30.00 ANAHEIM ANGELS vs CHICAGO WHITE SOX So it was that when I went down to Edison Field tonight, it was actually kinda sorta with the hope that the Angels would win again and take three of four from their vaunted AL Central opponents. I mean, they were playing great ball. They'd won me over, just on sheer grit. Never in a million years would I have called myself a fan, but I had to give the guys some credit: they were playing their hearts out, and I wanted to see them do well. So there's the set-up. I will say this: this was hands-down the most exciting game I've seen all year. It also taught me a lesson I'll not soon forget. The White Sox jumped out to an early lead on Angels rookie starter Seth Etherton, with a Jose Valentin home run and a Chris Singleton RBI double in the first and second innings, respectively. The Angels countered with two runs of their own in the second and third innings, and tacked on another when Mo Vaughn doubled Erstad home with two out in the fifth. Etherton managed to keep things quiet through an impressive six and two thirds innings, but was lifted after his 119th pitch with two outs and Frank Thomas at third. Mike Holtz then came on to strike out Jeff Abbott, ending the threat. I took advantage of the seventh inning stretch to move from my seat in right field down to the infield, and was rewarded with some up-close fireworks in the bottom of the frame. With Jim Parque still on the mound for the Sox, Adam Kennedy doubled to right and moved over to third on a Kevin Stocker bunt. Erstad singled for the third time in the game, but Kennedy was held at third.

The Mo Vaughn Story
By nomaronline Born: December 15, 1967 in Norwalk, Connecticut Height: Weight: 268 lbs. Teams: Boston Red Sox (1991-1998), Anaheim Angels (1999-2001), New York Mets (2002) Hometown: Easton, Massachusetts College: Seton Hall Bats: Left Throws: Right MLB Debut: June 27, 1991 In 1990 Vaughn saw action in Pawtucket, Boston's top farm club where he hit .295. His 22 home runs and 78 RBI's were second best to Phil Plantier who led the league in both categories. 1991 was the break through year for the Hit Dog. After 14 home runs and 50 RBI's produced at Pawtucket, Vaughn made his major league debut on June 27. For the 1991 season in the majors, Mo batted .260 with four homers and 32 RBI's. In 1992, Mo's sophomore season with the Sox, experienced some difficulty by starting his first 23 games hitting only .185. In May he made a short stint at Pawtucket and then returned to Boston's lineup in June. For the season, Vaughn hit .234 with 13 dingers and 57 Runs brought in. However, 1993 was the greatest season yet for the Hit Dog. He busted out of the pen with his cool .297 batting average launching 29 homers with 101 RBI's to be named Red Sox MVP by Boston Writers Association. In 1996, the Red Sox extended Mo Vaughn's contract through the 1998 season. They signed him to a $18.3 million contract and with the performance of Mo's bat, the Red Sox were in for a treat. People have been wondering how Mo had been hitting the ball better than he did his previous year. He mentioned to the press that he was told that he hit .409 whenever he made contact with the ball in '95, so he's been working on cutting the strikeout total so he can get some more base hits. Earlier that season Mo received a finger injury from getting it stuck to some pine tar on his bat. But he stayed in the line-up to continue to keep his team out of the basement of the AL East division. After being named the AL Player of the month for May and player of the week for September 8-14, Vaughn became a top contender for MVP honors.

Vaughn just might
get back in swing BY SAM BORDEN
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Mo Vaughn thinks he can still hack it, maybe as a DH, after resting knee. Mo Vaughn is considering a comeback. The former Mets first baseman missed all of last season with an arthritic left knee, but his agent said yesterday that Vaughn is feeling stronger and had asked him to see what opportunities might be available. "He's working out and doing better," Greg Genske said. "He's interested in what options there are." Genske said he had fielded calls from a few clubs and said Vaughn would be a good fit with an American League team, where he could be a designated hitter. The 36-year-old went on the disabled list for the Mets in May of 2003 and announced his retirement last January after doctors told him his knee would keep getting worse. But if Vaughn didn't have to play the field, it's possible he could return. He was the 1995 AL MVP for the Red Sox, but battled injuries in recent years. He sat out the entire 2001 season with a ruptured tendon in his left arm and hit .190 with three homers and 15 RBI in 27 games during his last season with the Mets. If Vaughn does sign a new deal, it will surely be for less than his last one. The Mets paid him $17 million last season ($15 million in salary and a $2 million buyout of his 2005 option), though 75% of that was covered by an insurance policy.

June 25, 1999 Joltin’ Joe the biggest Angel fan in the world was on hand to begin the ceremony. He excitedly reported that "Mo Vaughn was in the Park!" Covered head to toe in Angels memorabilia including a seat cushion attached to the appropriate part of his body, Joe announced that Disneyland would donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of select Anaheim Angels collectible items autographed by Mo Vaughn to the RBI League. The Dapper Dans introduced the next speaker, Cynthia Harriss, Executive Vice-President of Disneyland, in their superb four-part harmony. Ms. Harriss described the guest of honor Mo Vaughn as one "who besides being great on the field is equally heroic off the field in his support of the community." One of the organizations he has dedicated himself to is the Gene Autry RBI League. In this case RBI stands for Reviving Baseball in the Inner cities and is an organization dedicated to promoting youth sports. Representatives from the 28 local Orange County teams were on hand, their colored teams jerseys were speckled throughout the crowd that had gathered for the ceremony. Mo Vaughn was presented with a certificate that named him Honorary Citizen of Disneyland for recognition of his support for the RBI League. Mo has dedicated $100 for each of his RBIs this season.
