Jason and Big Mo
By Lance Linden, January 28, 2002
Ever since Jason Giambi made millions of New York haters miserable by signing with the Yankees, SABRWorld has been comparing his move with Mo Vaughn's six-year, eighty-million-dollar commitment to Anaheim after the 1997 season. There is no question that there are similarities:
Giambi and Vaughn are both very good hitters who play first base with the grace and agility of drunken chickens.
Giambi and Vaughn both moved across the country at similar ages (Vaughn's first year in Anaheim was his age-31 season; Giambi turned 31 this month)
Giambi and Vaughn are both what one might call big fellas.
Giambi and Vaughn are both lauded for being clubhouse leaders.
Given that Mo was not as productive after moving to Anaheim, many are predicting that Giambi is a good bet to suffer a similar deterioration. There are, however, two problems with the above comparisons: Vaughn Boston, truth be told, was never as good as Jason Giambi.

He says it was a decision based on where the clubs were going, the money didn't have anything to do with it? Didn't seem that way to me. Nonetheless, he is still deserving of a site here, so please flip through and enjoy.

Vaughn won the American League MVP award in and was a key factor in the Boston Red Sox 's 1995 and playoff teams. He was noted for "crowding the plate"; his stance was such that his front elbow often appear to be hovering in the strike zone , which intimidated pitchers into throwing wide and outside. Because of Vaughn and others like Barry Bonds , the MLBA instituted regulations in that changed the strike zone from a low outside box, to a high inside one; the boundaries used decades ago. The new regulations also banned hitters from using hard protective gear, which was letting them get closer to home plate
Early career
Vaughn was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 1st round (23rd pick) of the amateur draft and made his Major league debut on June 27
Best years
Vaughn became the centre of the Red Sox's line-up in , hitting 29 home runs and contributing 101 RBIs , but his reputation as one of the most feared hitters in the American League wasn't grounded until the strike-shortened 1995 season when Vaughn hit 39 home runs with 129 RBIs and a .326

Charles Darwin's theory that the strongest species will find a way to outlast the weaker ones can easily be applied to Major League Baseball as well. Especially this time of year. The strongest teams go on a winning streak, the best players get hot , and issues like injuries and playing time work themselves out for the good teams and bury the bad ones. The strong are outlasting the weak. At the same time, intangible elements about the baseball season begin to take their toll. Pitchers who have spent the whole season giving up gopher balls in hitter-friendly parks wear down and either get hurt or burn out mentally; batters get weary of trying to pump home runs out of SBC Park or Petco Park and go into slumps. Yes, even the ballparks themselves play a role in determining which teams are the fittest to survive.

Baseball Fever National League New York Mets PDA View Full Version : Vaughn may say 'No Mo' Sandman 05-08-2003, 11:50 AM NEW YORK - Mo Vaughn does not want to be a part-time player, or a designated hitter. He wants to play every day.
And if Vaughn's ailing knee prevents him from doing so, then he will say goodbye to baseball.
"This is it, right here, in terms of fixing it," Vaughn said of the high potential for surgery on his left knee, prior to the Dodgers' 2-1 win against the Mets on Wednesday night at Shea Stadium.
"I tried it for two months," Vaughn said of playing in pain. "If I can't contribute the way I'm supposed to contribute, then what are you here for?"
Vaughn will explore whether to undergo surgery to shave the 10-to-12 bone spurs off his knee, then have another procedure to insert a cushion of a collagen-like substance to prevent further pain.
Mets' general manager Steve Phillips termed such surgery as "more experimental," in that lubricant injections are involved.
Phillips said an MRI taken on Vaughn's knee revealed no cartilage on one side of the joint, where the spurs are "bone-on-bone.

Tangotiger Background If you are new to this project, you should read about it first The Preliminary Results Thank you to all those who participated! I've received almost 500 ballots (and am still accepting them until Opening Day). I thought it would be a little fun to look at some early returns. For this particular article, it will simply be various lists of the best and the worst, as you fans see them. Notes To qualify for these lists, a player had to have at least 5 ballots for a category. 406 of the 499 players on the ballots qualified. The players who received the most number of ballots were Jeter, Bernie Williams, and Soriano, at 58 each. I rejected 1.2% of the ballots (6 in all) for nonsensical selections. In one case, a fan marked all traits for all players as "1", meaning "poor". Adventure Yankee Fan Memories Baseball Musings Great Games I've Been To... On Being A Baseball Fan December 19 2000 : Think Back to April 3rd... In the 1990s, the Yankees often opened the season on the West Coast, and 2000 followed that precedent. ESPN brought Opening Day at Edison International Field into homes all across America, so loyal Yankees fans everywhere could see one of the Bombers' four "aces," Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez face a potent Anaheim line-up. Pumped up for their season by new manager Mike Scioscia, the Angels would have some of the league's best hitters in 2000, and Yankee-watchers were wondering if El Duque, plagued by back problems in Spring Training, would have the stuff to dominate as he had in the 1999 postseason. The last time he had faced the Angels, he had given up a career-high ten earned runs, and the Angels were the only team in the league with a winning record against the Yankees over the previous two seasons (12-10). El Duque would also be the first foreign-born pitcher to take the hill on Opening Day for the Yankees. Meanwhile, Ken Hill, who spent much of 1999 injured, took the assignment for Anaheim, for the fourth Opening Day start of his career.
