Conti, 28, is out of minor league options and will get an Opening Day roster spot.
"In Jason Conti, we have acquired an outfielder with Major League experience that will provide immediate assistance given the injuries our club has sustained during Spring Training," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said. "He has great versatility in the outfield and will provide depth to our club as we begin regular-season play."
Jenkins was projected to start in left field, but has been slow to recover from a bone bruise near his left wrist suffered March 1. The Brewers are experimenting with a specially-designed padded glove, and are considering placing Jenkins on the 15-day disabled list. Clark suffered a strained groin in a game against the Cubs on March 3 and could also be headed for the DL because he is out of options.
Conti hit .257 with three home runs and 21 RBIs in 78 games with Tampa Bay last season. He hit .222 (6-for-27) with a double and a solo home run in 15 preseason contests with the Devil Rays.
In Milwaukee he will likely share a backup role with Scott Podsednik. Without Jenkins, John Vander Wal could start in left alongside center fielder Alex Sanchez and right fielder Jeffrey Hammonds.

Blankmeyer leads St. John’s into NCAAs Mo’town resident has baseball squad playing inspired
By Joe Hofmann, Daily Record The St. John’s University baseball team suffered through a period of what coach Ed Blankmeyer called “mediocrity” through parts of the last 10 years. But the Red Storm are mediocre no more — thanks in part to what the Morristown resident has been able to do at the school which had been known a lot more for basketball than baseball over the years. The Big East team qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season and will open up against ACC at-large entrant Virginia in Corvallis, Ore., today. The four-team regional also includes Big Ten champion Ohio State and host Oregon State.

Main September 30, 2004 Valentin's Day Javier Valentin, who's done a great job blocking balls in the dirt since he came in, drives in the go-ahead run for Cincinnati in the top of the 12th with a double. The Cubs are coming to bat in the bottom of the inning trailing 2-1. Update : Cubs get a single to start the 12th. Macias got the hit. Update : Patterson strikes out swinging after failing to sacrifice. Update : Nomar tried to drag a bunt, but the third baseman Lopez makes a good play. Man on 2nd, two out for Ramirez. Update : Valentin just saved a run by blocking two wild pitches. Update : Padilla walks Ramirez, Alou is up, men on 1st and 2nd, 2 out. Update : Alou flies out to center to end the game. The Cubs are now 1 game out of the wild card with 3 to play. Just a great, edge of your seat game. Chicago had plenty of opportunities but just couldn't drive a runner home. Valentin should get the game ball for his defense and his offense.
Posted by David Pinto at 05:37 PM Games TrackBack (0) Comments Yep, that's a tough loss. I love to see lots of tight, meaningful games at the end of the season!

Salaries: The Best Get Richer,The Mediocre Get Poorer
Despite the 1994-95 labor dispute, total player salaries have remained constant since 1994. But the distribution of these salaries has changed: the squeeze on baseball's "middle class" has reduced the median salary by over $100,000. While the Vaughns and Valentins can earn more than ever, experienced middle relievers and fourth outfielders no longer command million-dollar salaries, and smart teams no longer sign fading veterans to top-dollar contracts.

Dodgers put Werth on DL; Valentin activated
This story was published Sunday, July 31st, 2005 By Sports Network Jim Edmonds belted a two-run homer off Wilson Alvarez in the 11th inning to give the St. Louis Cardinals a 7-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Edmonds finished with three RBI. Mark Grudzielanek doubled twice and hit a three-run homer for the NL Central-leading Cardinals, who took the final two contests of the three-game set at Dodger Stadium. Sunday was supposed to be an off day for Edmonds, but he entered the game in the seventh inning as a pinch-hitter. "You never have a day off in the National League, you just have to be ready to play from the sixth inning on," Edmonds said.

History
There's a sort of myth that hitting for a cycle - a single, double, triple, and home run in the same game - is an unusually rare accomplishment, far rarer than a no-hitter. Actually, the two feats have just about the same rate of occurrence. There have been 229 no-hitters in the two existing major leagues, and players have hit for the cycle 237 times. (Players also hit for the cycle 18 times in the American Association, when that was a major league. I haven't been able to find a list of those players, however.) Two players did it three times in their career: Bob Meusel of the New York Yankees, and Babe Herman, who twice hit for the cycle with the Brooklyn Dodgers and did it a third time with the Chicago Cubs. Herman's two cycle performances for the Dodgers came in the same year, 1931. He's the only player to have done it twice in a single season in one of the modern major leagues. However, two other players did it for American Association teams: John Reilly, with Cincinnati in 1883, and Tip O'Neill, with St. Louis in 1887. One of baseball's rarest accomplishments to hit for the cycle with a grand slam home run. That's been done only six times in major league history, by the following players:
