Trammell and Lou Whitaker formed a keystone combination that surpassed all others in consecutive years together, yet Alan emerged as the acknowledged leader of the Tigers. After a Most Valuable Player year (1977) in the Southern League, the righthander graduated to the Tigers. Slight of build, Trammell proved a complete offensive and defensive player. He led the AL in sacrifice hits in 1981 and 1983. After an off-season in 1982, he was AL Comeback Player of the Year in 1983 at age 25. His 30 steals in 1983 were the most for a Detroit shortstop since 1917 and his .319 batting average was best among all AL righthanders. The Tigers reeled off 11 straight winning seasons with Trammell at shortstop. He was voted smartest and best defensive infielder by AL managers in 1984, drove in all of Detroit's runs in Game Four of the

briefly moved him to third base in favor of rookie Chris Pittaro. The experiment came to a quick end. Whitaker was Anderson's leadoff batter until being moved to the number-two slot in 1988. From his rookie season through 1988, he never played on a losing team. But his best season was wasted on the last-place 1989 team. SHOPPING Look for Lou Whitaker books at BN.com

ALAN TRAMMELL
Alan Trammell was the starting shortstop in Detroit from 1978 through 1993. He teamed with Lou Whitaker until 1995, and the pair played a record number of games together. In 1984 he won the World Series MVP award when he batted .450 with two homers in the Tigers five-game victory. In September 1987, Trammell batted .416 with six homers and 17 RBI, putting together an 18-game hitting streak from the 11th thru the 29th in which he hit a blistering .457. The Tigers won the American League East division by a single game on the last day of the season, yet despite his herculean efforts, Trammell finished second to Toronto's George Bell in the Most Valuable Player voting. It was one of the worst decisions in award voting history. After his playing career, Trammell returned to manage the Tigers in 2003.

LOU WHITAKER
Lou Whitaker was a gold glove second baseman who performed near the top of his position for nearly two decades, and teamed with Alan Trammell to form the longest running double play combination in history. Whitaker was a leadoff man with power, decent speed, and good pitch-selection at the plate. His arm was considered one of the best in the game and he was adept at making the pivot. "Sweet Lou" made plays look so easy he was often accused of being lackadaisical.

Alan Trammell to Baseball HOF
View Current Signatures Sign the Petition To: Baseball Hall of Fame Alan Trammell, #3, the great Tiger shortstop was recently declined his rightful Hall of Fame induction. This is great travesty for any fan of the game.
This is the second greatest crime of the century, ranking second only behind Trammell not be awarded the American League MVP in 1987. That year, George Bell of the Toronto Blue Jays unjustly won the award that Trammell so deserved.
Look at the numbers for 1987 to see how Trammell was cheated and how this crime was nothing but foreshaowing to the present HOF travesty:
Trammell's Hits, AVG, OBP, SLG: 205, .343, .402, .551
Bell's Hits, AVG, OBP, SLG: 188, .308, .352, .605
These figures do not even begin to address that Trammell was one of the greatest shortstops (a position player) in MLB history and Bell was a mediocre outfielder who platooned as a DH. Trammell and his counterpart at second base, Sweet Lou Whitaker, went on to combine for the most double plays turned in MLB history. George Bell was subsequently traded to the White Sox to make the transition from obscurity to oblivion.
As to the current HOF voting debacle, Ozzie Smith of the St. Louis Cardinals (and the San Diego Padres before that) was the darling of the sportwriters an was easily inducted in his first year of eligibility. We of the Alan Trammell fan club do not hold this against the Wizard of Oz and we believe he should have been inducted. However, when you consider the facts of the case for Trammell and the statistics of Ozzie side-by-side, you can clearly see how Trammell was robbed.
