Déjà vu All Over Again
by Mike Carminati Holy cow! The Yankees beat the Red Sox in improbable fashion tonight with an eleventh-inning walk-off home run by Aaron Boone, 6-5. The win was improbable because the Yankees once trailed 4-0 with Red Sox starter Pedro Martinez cruising. The Red Sox led 5-2 with one out in the bottom of the eighth with Martinez in control. The Fox crew was ramping up its salute to the Red Sox in anticipation of their appearance in the Fall Classic. The Yankees had just five outs left and Derek Jeter had seemed ready to be expend one, after falling behind 0-2 while being made to look silly in doing so. Martinez seemed to regain control as he quickly got two (questionable) strikes called on Hideki Matsui. Then Matsui took the next ball down the right field line for a ground rule double as it was touched by a fan, momentarily a lucky break for the Red Sox since Williams would have scored easily. Jorge Posada was due up next. My first thought was that Martinez would plunk Posada as he promised in game three. The beanball was delivered under similar circumstances: left-handed batter with runners at second and third. But Martinez was pitching to Posada.

So apparently Timlin made his own private video of the ALCS and World Series (he missed the ALDS) and all the players got to see it. Wouldn't it be great to see? Nice of Timlin, one of the players on the team who already had a World Series ring, to preserve the memories of the year and send it to all his teammates. (Also, a good Shaughnessy story. Maybe now that Pedro's out of his town and the so-called Curse has been lifted, he can actually put his writing talent to use.)
Two bits struck me:
"You see Mike Myers ripping into [ESPN's] Harold Reynolds for not believing in us after we win in New York."
General manager Theo Epstein is among those who have cited the early-morning bus ride from Logan to Fenway as a favorite moment. The newly crowned world champions touched down in Boston early on Oct. 28 and were wildly cheered as they rode on buses through the normally sleepy streets of downtown. Theo said the scene reminded him of REM's "Everybody Hurts" video. Presumably it's not quite the same mood as Jake Scott's great "Everybody Hurts" video , but I can sort of see what Theo means. Trust Theo to make a music video reference.

Thursday, April 01, 2004 FORT MYERS, Fla. What is it like when you really and truly are getting everybody out? "It's hard to put into words," reports Mike Timlin. Ah, yes, Mike Timlin, the great What-If? of the 2003 American League Championship Series. He was warming up in the sixth inning of Game 7. He was warming up in the seventh inning, too. If Grady Little had decided to extend his thanks to Pedro Martinez after seven fine innings, Mike Timlin would have replaced him. Yeah, if.

Two throwing errors in final inning allow Minnesota to score winning run

Boston relief pitcher Mike Timlin throws wildly to first base after fielding a sacrifice bunt by Minnesota's Nick Punto in the ninth inning Saturday. The wild throw allowed the Twins to score the game-winning run.
MINNEAPOLIS - Manager Ron Gardenhire and the Twins are starting to see the signs of a turnaround. They just hope it's not too late. Reliever Mike Timlin threw wildly to first base on a sacrifice attempt in the ninth - Boston's second throwing error in the inning - allowing Minnesota to score the winning run in a 4-3 victory over the Red Sox on Saturday night. "Tonight I felt like something was going to give here," Gardenhire said. "Confidence and momentum are huge in baseball and hopefully we have it on our side now." Michael Cuddyer led off the ninth with an infield single off Timlin (4-2), but third baseman Bill Mueller bounced his throw past first allowing Cuddyer to move to second. Nick Punto bunted the next pitch back to Timlin, who also fired his throw wide of first base. "I threw it away, I lost the game," Timlin said. "There's no excuse - no bad grip, no foot slippage."

Grady Little then visited Martinez on the mound. It was apparent—and Little confirmed later—that Little had asked Martinez if he wanted to remain in the game, to which Martinez "cowboyed up" in the affirmative. Little had left-hander Alan Embree ready and Hideki Matsui was up. Martinez seemed to regain control as he quickly got two (questionable) strikes called on Hideki Matsui. Log in Register Help Koch-Eyed? If further proof was by Mike Carminati Koch-Eyed? If further proof was needed that Billy Beane is a genius, it came last night. Arbitration-eligible closer Billy Koch, who was traded by Beane's A's this offseason, was signed by the White Sox for two years and $10.625 M ($4.25M in 2003 and $6.375M in 2004). Don't get me wrong. Koch is only 28 and is a fine closer who had a very good year in 2002. My first reaction was just that the current market does not warrant the salary or the length of the contract. The Sox think otherwise: "As we talked about at the time we traded for Billy, part of the appeal of doing the deal was the fact that we would be able to keep him around beyond 2003," White Sox assistant general manager Rick Hahn said. "This contract not only rewards Billy for the unprecedented level of success he has achieved at this stage in his career, but also provides the club with some cost certainly going forward," Hahn said. Maybe I'm wrong. Let's take a look at a few things. First, here are the relievers (10+ relief appearances in 2002) who made over $4M in 2002 with their salaries for 2003.
