Value Added Batting Data 1980 to 1998
by Tom Ruane
Over on SABR-L, I've been writing for some time about using the value added approach to evaluating hitting, stolen bases and pitching. This approach was originally developed by Gary R. Skoog in an article called MEASURING RUNS CREATED: THE VALUE ADDED APPROACH in The 1987 Bill James Baseball Abstract and uses Expected Future Runs tables to evaluate how much a batter, base-runner or pitcher helped or hurt his team. Expected Future Runs tables contain the average number of runs a team scores from each of the 24 game situations, with outs going from to 2 outs and the bases going from empty to run. Here's a sample table for the 1996 AL: MenOn Number of Outs FST x -x- xx- x x-x -xx xxx Using these tables, we determine the value of each play to be equal to: ending-value + runs-scored-on-play - starting-value So a two-out grand-slam home runs would be worth: .128 + 4 - .907=3.221 runs While a strikeout in the same situation would have a value of: - .907=-.907 runs The data accompanying this article has value added data for each batter from 1980 to 1997. Here's a sample entry (because of the wide lines, I've broken it into two parts, the right and left side):

(Interestingly, Thomas was born the exact same day as contemporary Jeff Bagwell .) Frank Thomas became one of baseball's biggest stars in the , playing solely for the Chicago White Sox . He was given the nickname "The Big Hurt" by broadcaster Ken Harrelson . Thomas is one of several notable baseball players who played college baseball at Auburn University He is notable not for his below-average defense at first base , but for being one of the best pure hitters in baseball's history. He has been compared to being as close to a right-handed version of Ted Williams as there is. A slugger who often hit 35-40 home runs per year as a matter of course, hits has hit .315 or better many of his years, and quite importantly, often draws well over 100 walks each season, Thomas has proven himself to be one of the top five right-handed hitters ever; and the second best hitter since 1990, behind only

A strapping, 6'3" 200-lb slugger, Thomas hit 30 home runs in 1953, his first full ML season with his hometown Pirates, and was considered the successor of Ralph Kiner , who was traded to the Cubs that June. Thomas followed with 11 straight years with double-figure home runs, his best campaign coming in 1958 when he finished second in the NL to Ernie Banks with 35 HR and 109 RBI. That August 16, he hit three HR in a game. A dead-pull hitter who crowded the plate, he smashed more than his share of foul "home runs." He was always willing to bet all comers he could catch their hardest throw barehanded, and he never lost. He was an All-Star outfielder in 1954-55 and was the NL's starting third baseman in the 1958

After watching Frank Thomas crush a home run more than 450 feet during the 1992 season, White Sox broadcaster Ken Harrelson spontaneously dubbed the Chicago slugger "The Big Hurt". The nickname instantly stuck, aptly describing the frightening force of nature that Thomas represented at the plate. Through his first eight years, the Big Hurt's offensive production ranked him with the greatest right-handed batters in baseball history. After two subpar seasons that also tarnished his previously exemplary relationships with fans and teammates, Thomas regained his standing among the game's elite hitters with a triumphant 2000 campaign. A series of early career setbacks fueled Thomas' drive to excel. Incredibly, he went unpicked through the over 60 rounds of the 1986 amateur draft despite posting big numbers for his high school team in Columbus, Georgia. "I'd have signed for $5,000, that's how bad I wanted to play," Thomas later said of his frustration at not being taken. Helping soothe his disappointment was a two-sport scholarship to Auburn. Thomas gave up the pigskin to concentrate on baseball after his freshman year and won the Southeastern Conference MVP in 1989. His 49 career homers set a new school record.

CHICAGO Frank Thomas played in pain as long as he could, trying to be a big contributor for the Chicago White Sox as they forged the best record in the major-leagues through the first four months. Advertisement Now his season is all but over, and perhaps he has played his last game with the only team he's ever known. Thomas is likely to miss the rest of the season because of a fracture in his left foot close to where he had surgery last year, a doctor said Friday. "The man is hurting right now and I'm hurting for him," White Sox general manager Ken Williams said. The injury did not appear to be career-ending, Los Angeles-based surgeon Dr. Richard Ferkel said. "It appears Frank has re-injured his foot over the last two weeks while playing baseball, and recent evaluation shows a new fracture through the navicular in his foot," Ferkel said after examining Thomas recently. "Because of the healing time involved with this fracture, it does not appear that Frank will be able to return to the White Sox this season. I want to emphasize that I do not feel this injury is career ending."

Sep. 19, 1967- Baseball player. Jim Abbott is one of an elite group of major-league pitchers to have thrown a no-hitter, a feat he accomplished while he was a New York Yankee in 1993. Abbott, who began the 1995 season as a member of the Chicago White Sox and ended it as a California Angel, is also among the few hurlers whose fastballs have been clocked at over ninety miles an hour. What makes his success all the more remarkable is the fact that he plays ball without a right hand. He was born with a rounded stub at the end of his right arm, with one small, finger-like protrusion where his right hand should be. He pitches with his left hand, with the palm of his glove resting on the stub. After each pitch, he quickly switches the glove to his left hand, so that he can catch or field balls thrown or hit back. Prior to becoming a major-league pitcher, Abbott was an Olympic gold medalist, a collegiate baseball all-star, and a high-school standout in three sports. Abbott's athletic achievements have amazed sports fans and inspired countless numbers of Americans with disabilities, who flock to ballparks to see him pitch. He receives hundreds of letters a week, many of them from handicapped children and their parents, and he tries to answer as many as he can, even though he has never considered himself to be disabled. "I just don't think all of this about me playing with one hand is as big an issue as everyone wants to make it," he told Ira Berkow of the New York Times (December 25, 1992). "I don't try to run from the attention about it; I just accept it." Abbott maintains that the toughest thing he faces is not his disability but major-league hitters. The feeling is apparently mutual. "He's got the hand that counts," Larry Sheets of the Baltimore Orioles told a reporter for the Washington Post (April 26, 1989) after facing Abbott's power pitching for the first time.

June 30, 1997 Regardless of a sports game's features, it lives or dies by two things: play control and graphics. All-Star Baseball '97 Featuring Frank Thomas is a good example of a feature-heavy game that has adequate play control and adequate graphics. The end result: an adequate game that lacks the polish and finesse needed to be great. All-Star Baseball features all 30 Major League teams, including the new Tampa Bay and Arizona teams; over seven hundred real MLB players; 28 stadiums to play in; the complete 1997 schedule, including the new interleague games; player trades; and 27 category statistics from STATS, Inc. In addition, there are six modes of gameplay: exhibition, season, playoffs, all-star game, home run derby, and batting practice. In terms of features it is definitely on par with the other titles out there. Rendered in 3-D with motion-captured players, All-Star Baseball looks good, although there are a couple of flaws. For instance, entire transitions are missing, so players jump around while batting. Player movements are jagged, giving the game a delayed time-warp feel. The play-by-play calls, voiced by Jon Miller, also suffer from imperfection; it is quite common for the strung-together phrases to sound completely wrong. On the plus side, the calls of hot dog vendors were good.
