Those That Refuse to Learn From the Past Are Condemned to Repeat It
by Ben Brown and Mike Elliott PROLOGUE 1. Corner the strikeout market. 2. Spend $35 on a dominant hitter. 3. Get Fernando Tatis. 4. Get one dominant closer. The math was simple. There were sixteen teams in the National League and thirteen Tout Wars teams. Therefore, if we could get one dominant closer we would do well with saves. Also, if we drafted some respectable closers-in-waiting we might get lucky and win saves. We left the draft with John Rocker as our dominant closer, and Armando Almanza, Dan Miceli, and Valerio De Los Santos as our closers-in-waiting. The end result: Rocker was traded to Cleveland and became irrelevant, De Los Santos spent 2001 on the DL. Almanza was a non-entity; Miceli was released by Florida in June and then condemned to purgatory in Colorado. In addition, our late season attempts to get back in the saves game by trading for Strickland and Urbina helped net us a total of 46.5 pitching points out of a possible 65, and we ended up in 4th place overall in pitching.

We're about to enjoy a classic game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs at Busch Stadium on September 8, 1998. This happens to be the game that Mark McGwire hit his 62nd home run, breaking Roger Maris' 1961 single season home run record. The game was broadcast on the Fox television network. Before the game starts, there are a few things we need. First, you'll need a scorecard, which you can download from my scorecards page. I recommend you use a scorecard that allows you to track runners around the bases, as well as balls and strikes (all of mine have places for this information on them). Second, you'll need a pencil. You could complete the scorecard in ink, but I find that I sometimes second-guess my original scoring and need to erase my first instinct. Once you start scoring games you'll discover there are many intricacies to every play, and there are often multiple possible interpretations of the events in the game. Finally, it's handy to have a copy of the rules close by. During the half inning breaks, you can look up the rules for particular events that you may never have seen, or thought about before you had to write them down. Usually this isn't necessary unless you are being particular about the statistics you will generate (like whether a run was earned or not), but it sometimes helps.

by Mike Carminati The Montreal Expos signed Quoth Omar the Magnificent: The AP article Batista is a player rapidly losing his skills as well. His defense fell of severely last season, along with his OBP (.270, .32 points below his poor career average). His slugging average was the lowest since he was a 23-year-old role player, as was his batting average. He walked 26 times in 670 plate appearances. His performance was not that much worse than his career averages, but it was lower in just about every facet of his game. Posted on Dec 29, 2003 at 12:47 PM
Comments Good call, Mike. I've been playing with Win Share stats on my site, and I've got Batista's 2003 Win Shares at -5.9, vs. expected average Win Shares, given his playing time. That's the same as Brook Fordyce, and a full Win Share worse than Jeff Cirillo, to cite a couple of examples. Posted by: studes at December 29, 2003 01:52 PM

Baseball has been blessed with great writers and we are so lucky that the supply seems never ending so that when we lose one we are comforted with the void being filled by another.
We lost one this past week when the great African-American writer Sam Lacy passed away at 99. Lacy was the sports editor of The (Baltimore) Afro-American Newspaper since 1944 and was an influential figure in the integration of major league baseball. Lacy was the first black reporter to become a member of the Baseball Writers' Association of America, and was inducted into the writer's wing at the baseball Hall of Fame in July 1998. In the early 1930s, Lacy was a major proponent of the Negro League and its players and even suggested to Washington Senators owner Clark Griffith in 1936 that Negro League players might be able to help his horrible team. In 1940, he joined the Chicago Defender, a black newspaper, where he started a letter-writing campaign to major league baseball owners to promote integrating baseball. On Oct. 23, 1945, Lacy's 42nd birthday, Branch Rickey signed Jackie Robinson to a contract with the Dodgers' Montreal farm club and Lacy closely tracked Robinson’s year with Montreal and first year with Brooklyn.

Expos Hit San Juan For Chunk Of Season By Sarah Talalay March 30, 2003
When Major League Baseball found itself in the unenviable position of owning the Montreal Expos beyond last season, Commissioner Bud Selig charged executives with coming up with a plan that would boost the finances of the team with the lowest revenue and poorest attendance. Some 50 to 60 ideas were considered, including taking the Expos to cities vying for a team, according to John McHale Jr., baseball's executive vice president for administration. They chose to make San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Expos' "home" for 22 games or more than a quarter of their home schedule. The Marlins, often considered the island's team, play in San Juan in September. Baseball officials expected games in baseball-loving Puerto Rico would generate more revenue than Montreal's cavernous Olympic Stadium, where rarely more than a few thousand fans attend. "First was to try to lessen the financial responsibility of the other clubs to subsidize the Expos," McHale said. At the same time, they could promote the game outside North America.

National Post Paradise Found: Major League Baseball's San Juan Experiment A Memorable Experience BY Stephanie Myles April 19, 2003
    National Post.
Gazette baseball writer Stephanie Myles has spent the past eight days in San Juan covering the Expos during their first "homestand" in Puerto Rico. The following is her diary from the trip. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The Expos' travelling party arrives in balmy San Juan from chilly Chicago in the wee hours of Friday morning to a welcome reserved only for major VIPs. Sirens flashing, the motorcycle brigade leads the buses the few miles from Juan Antonio Marin airport to the team hotel in the Isla Verde resort area. No point checking into the El San Juan through the lobby, a bustling hot spot at night. They go through a back entrance off a parking lot. Once a few rooming issues are settled several players who brought their wives had the hotel assign double beds, single guys get the kings, broadcaster Mark Griffin gets a room over the 24-hour-a-day thump-thump-thump of the disco many head off to introduce themselves to Dama Suerte Lady Luck. FRIDAY The locals say the weather has been picture-perfect for seven months. The lack of rain was so severe, any more of it was going to bring drought restrictions to this small island.
