Prospect News for August 1st
Yesterday, the baseball world was focused on 40-year-old Randy Johnson . Today, it's 19-year-old B.J. Upton . The Devil Rays have called up Upton, who is the top prospect in the game. He has Alfonso Soriano -like talent. What Upton has that Soriano doesn't have is patience at the dish. He will take a walk. Defensively, Upton is not big league-ready. He's going to make his share of errors. But I believe this is a learning process more so than a long-term problem. I sure didn't think yesterday's trade deadline would be as full of fireworks as it turned out to be. Pretty darn interesting. The new jack GMs sure love to wheel and deal. I love it. You could say they are fearless or foolish. Or maybe both. Fearlessly foolish? Paul DePodesta, Larry Beinfest, and Theo Epstein don't run away from the table. They'll shoot pool with Minnesota Fats until the sun comes up. Cubs: SS Nomar Garciaparra and LF Matt Murton for SS Alex S. Gonzalez
