Darryl goes deep #93 Classic Moment: October 12, 1996 During the 1998 playoffs, the Yankees rallied around Darryl Strawberry, playing with his number 39 stitched on their caps as they wished him a speedy recovery from cancer. They rallied around him on the field in 1996, as Strawberry had the best postseason series of his career in the ALCS. In the Yankees' five-game triumph over the Baltimore Orioles, Strawberry hit .417 (5-for-12) with three home runs. Two of those homers came in Game 4, an 8-4 Yankees victory that put them on the brink of their first AL championship in 15 years. Strawberry's second homer, a two-run shot in the eighth inning off Armando Benitez, provided the Yankees with important insurance runs before John Wetteland closed it out in the ninth. The next day, Strawberry showed that he was not finished, and hit a home run to help the Yankees close out the series with a 6-4 victory.

Born: March 12, 1962 in Los Angeles, CA What a shame. A Hall-of-Fame talent. But a completely undisciplined individual, at least as far as being able to resist the allure of drug abuse and moral vice. In the first eight seasons that Darryl started the year in the big leagues, he was named to the NL All-Star team. No Mets fan of the '80s will be able to forget the sight of Straw's follow-thru, as he launched another majestic home run deep into right field. But after that last All-Star season, he never got as many as 300 at-bats again, despite lasting in the big leagues for eight more years. And now Darryl will always be remembered as the morally bankrupt shell of a man who was arrested so many times for drug violations and threatened suicide, instead of the superstar who played on multiple World Championship clubs and courageously overcame cancer. What a shame. The Ticket Out: Darryl Strawberry and the Boys of Crenshaw , by Michael Sokolove
When Darryl Strawberry was a seventeen-year-old outfielder for Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles, stardom was guaranteed. He was a boy who had everything a god-like physique, lightning quick hands, and even a name that seemed to be made for bold headlines. The New York Mets didn't hesitate to use their first overall pick in the 1980 amateur draft to select Strawberry, a player whom scouts compared to such legends as Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, and Ted Williams. Early in his career, teammates, coaches, and managers predicted nothing but success for the young Strawberry, as they projected him into the Hall of Fame. Some felt he'd easily top five hundred homeruns, possibly even six hundred. He was thought to have the potential to be one of the greatest players ever to set foot on a baseball field.

The Ticket Out: Darryl Strawberry and the Boys of Crenshaw
by Adam L., New City, NY
The Ticket Out
follows one of the most talented high-school athletic teams ever: the 1979 Crenshaw High School baseball team. They were a group of 16 and 17-year-olds who possessed talents most only dream about. Michael Sokolove gives insight into the team and their season, but a majority of the book is about the team members' later lives.
The big-name player on the team is future Major-Leaguer Darryl Strawberry. Even though Strawberry's name is in the title, the book is about the team, not just him. Sokolove shows how people live and survive in poorer neighborhoods like Crenshaw. Many kids on the team don't know their fathers and live with many relatives, or even in a neighbor's home because their family is gone.
He devotes little time to describing baseball, but when he does, he uses fantastic imagery and play-by-play description to depict every aspect of the game. In most of the baseball scenes, the reader can see the game play out in his or her head, from the team's jersey to each player's appearance.
The Ticket Out not only shows the hard work of the team, but also the intensity and determination of the coach to gain respect from other schools. Coach Brooks Hurst works the boys of Crenshaw to the extreme, and as a result they need an extra set of bleachers just for all the scouts.

Testing Positive for Cocaine Usage Following Yankee sluuger Darryl Strawberry's one year suspension, Elliot Frantz and Michael Lynch spoke to a couple folks near the Harlem Meer. This was their first story so photos and pertinent information is missing. We'll send them or more seasoned reporters back out tomorrow for a follow up. How do you feel about the verdict that the baseball league gave to Darryl Strawberry ? I think that the verdict was right because he was warned about taking drugs while playing in the league more than once and he still did it again. Do you think that putting Darryl Strawberry through rehab again will help him in anyway Why ? I think that it¹s not going to help him unless he wants to be helped What advice would you give to Darryl Strawberry ? Just say no.

Some Advice for the Strawman
Rent Bad Lieutenant
February 29, 2000
Dear Future,
Today, Darryl Strawberry got suspended from baseball for a year for his 'third strike' drug offense. This may well be the end of Strawberry's career, since he's pushing 39 and doesn't exactly have a great medical or personal history.
I read in a column yesterday that Strawberry is going to end up to be the only, the only, player who'd put up stats like he did before his 30th birthday who won't be in the hall of fame. I find it hard to cry for him as one of the great coulda-beens of baseball, because he'll still have money, a name, and some World Series rings when all is said and done. He's no Tony Conigliaro.
Still, there's a bit of strange pathos about somebody who is so insistently whining about his self-redemption who's so far from realizing the nature of his inner beast. Strawb has, get this, just released a book about his "recovery". He's been all over the media the last few years (advice of counsel, or his agent?) talking about God and his personal redemption and so forth that allowed him to beat cancer and drugs.
I suppose this admitting-I've-got-a-problem thing was refreshing when it first happened. Sudden Sam McDowell might've been able to salvage his potential hall of fame career if he'd been able to admit he had a problem earlier, among who knows how many others of the earlier era, if society had been accepting of those problems in an earlier age.

Pros
The 1984 Topps rookie of Strawberry was once one of the hottest around. Cons Life filled with many mistakes ruined a promising career and now he has retired. The Bottom Line This card once symbolized hope and dreams for many baseball fans but now it shows what could have been. Full Review I was stumbling around Epinions and happened to come across this category and since I own four of these cards, I thought it was appropriate that I write this review. I acquired my Darryl Strawberry baseball cards not through a dealer but the old fashioned way, buying packs of baseball cards. Now a days, the baseball card industry has become so specialized that the popularity of packs of baseball cards has diminished very much. Now, special inserts and flashy cards are the "flavor of the month" if you will. The Card At one time, the 1984 Topps rookie of Strawberry was worth upwards of $20.00 when he was one of the true superstars of the game. This card was one of the hottest around, and appeared numerous times on the popular lists put out by Beckett's for cards that are desirous among collectors. Unfortunately, a life filled with many mistakes by him, ruined a once promising career and now he has retired from the game. The card is worth around $5.00 on the market now.

IN THE COACH'S BOX The Straw Man
by Stephen Lehman
How is the average baseball fan supposed to take this latest chapter in the Strawberry saga? Is Strawberry deserving of our pity? Our condemnation? Or should we just ignore him and hope he goes away? (After all, he’s thirty-seven years old; he’s had cancer; he’s abused drugs. How long can his mind and body realistically hold up in the highly competitive arena of Major League Baseball?) I’d like to suggest "none of the above." I’d like to suggest that our best bet is to try to understand what may have happened.
Psychologist James Garbarino, in his recent book about violent children, Lost Boys, writes: "We are willing to [punish violent boys] but not to understand them. Perhaps we feel that understanding them is unnecessary because punishment is the only issue, or perhaps we feel that an attempt to understand them is dangerous because it might excuse their actions." On the one side is the "simple moralism" of an eye for an eye. On the other, "an impulse to understand and, if understanding is possible, to rescue." Garbarino stands with the latter. So do I.
STEPHEN LEHMAN is editor of Elysian Fields Quarterly.
