Stargell was a star among men
By Joe Morgan
Special to ESPN.com Speaking at Willie Stargell's memorial service on Saturday in Wilmington, N.C., was one of the most difficult things I have ever done. It's not often when your hero is also your friend, but he was both to me. Everyone knows how great a baseball player he was. But he was actually a better person than he was a baseball player. Willie personified the words "gentle giant." His personality and his everyday life earned respect from anyone he ever met. 'Pops' had power Mark McGwire is now the Paul Bunyan of baseball. But Willie Stargell was Paul Bunyan before McGwire. He hit two balls out of Dodger Stadium, an unbelievable feat. He hit them over the roof, not just on the roof, at Dodger Stadium in right field. But even those home runs pale in comparison to one of the four upper-deck home runs he hit at Three Rivers Stadium. The seat where the ball landed was marked; when you stood at home plate, you couldn't even see the sign. When you stood in right field where where you could see the sign, you almost had to look straight up. I couldn't imagine ever seeing a ball hit that far.

Smizik: Briles left perfect mark on baseball
Wednesday, February 16, 2005 By Bob Smizik, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Side by side with the sad news of his death earlier this week was the recollection of the most famous piece of pitching by Nelson Kelley Briles. If you're a Pittsburgher of a certain age, you know it was Nellie Briles who put the Pirates in position win the 1971 World Series with a Game 5 masterpiece against the Baltimore Orioles. It was Briles, who had to sit out his turn in the National League Championship Series because of injury, who pitched a two-hit shutout and set the stage for Steve Blass' classic in Game 7. That might have been the most famous performance of Briles' career, but not his best. On a pleasant late August night in 1972, when the Pirates seemed cruising toward another World Series appearance, Briles literally was inches away from an accomplishment that would have dwarfed his masterpiece of 10 months earlier. The Pirates were playing the San Francisco Giants in a matchup of the NLCS participants from the previous year. But the Giants had stumbled that season and were 14 games under .500 and 21 1/2 games out of first place, which is why there were only 9,389 in the stands at Candlestick Park.

Baseball Fever General Baseball Hall of Fame Talk PDA View Full Version : 5 Tier HOF (v.2) - The Ultimate J W 07-08-2003, 11:27 AM When I first joined Baseball Fever (aka Baseball Almanac) a few of the older members got together to put divide markers on the field of 189 Major League players in the Hall of Fame (Ozzie Smith had just been elected). They started with the top 40, and voted on their Tiers 40 at a time until they had 29 left at the bottom.
Now that we will be adding Eddie Murray and Gary Carter, I figure it's time to revise the list with the throngs of new posters here.
I also declined making lists last time as I felt I wasn't knowledgeable enough to have an opinion. I'm looking forward to doing it now ;) .
Tier 1 - "The Ultimate"
These are the absolute top MLB players of all time. Record setters, championship leaders, ancient legends and icons fading to glory... they define the history of the sport.
I'm going to list the players on the top 2 Tiers from before, plus Murray and Carter (Total: 82). Please make a full list of 40 players you consider the greatest or most Hall worthy.

Baseball Fever General Baseball Hall of Fame Talk PDA View Full Version : 5 Tier HOF (v.2) - The Elite J W 07-21-2003, 09:07 PM We've voted on the top forty Hall of Famers, from Aaron to Young, in a pretty resolute mannerexactly forty players received over half the vote. Several names were left off without debate (I know I would've had some ammo for Grover Alexander, but them's the breaks). They arrive here.
Tier 2 - "The Elite"
While perhaps not the very best in baseball history, these players were still champions, milestone-makers and outright winners come heck or high water. The franchises they played for could hardly do without them.
I am going to combine the remainders of the last vote with the old 3rd-Tier members, and Addie Joss, who received a write-in 1st-Tier vote. The total is 83; trim it down to 40!

Frank Robinson of the Cincinnati Reds tied a rookie record for home runs in a season with his 38th homer of the year. Willi Stargel The towering drives that registered 7s and 8s on baseball's richter scale provided a stark contrast to the gentle manner in which Willie Stargell practiced his craft. As a lumbering 6-3, 225-pound, bat-waving slugger, Stargell could be frightening. As the easy-going leader of Pittsburgh's clubhouse, he could be inspiring. Nobody combined these seemingly divergent qualities more effectively than the man young Pirates players came to know affectionately as "Pops." Stargell was a classic power hitter. He stood deep in the box with feet spread far apart and attacked the pitch with a long, hard swing. The ball left his bat like a bazooka shot and he quickly gained a reputation for long home runs-two balls out of Dodger Stadium, seven out of Forbes Field, four into the upper deck at Three Rivers Stadium. In between his 475 career home runs and 1,936 strikeouts (No. 2 all-time), the seven-time All-Star collected enough hits to compile a solid .282 average over a 21-year career that began in 1962.

The head of "The Family" spoke softly and carried a big stick during 21 seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates. But Hall of Famer Willie Stargell, who died Monday at age 61, is perhaps most appreciated for his leadership qualities. "When he came up in 1962, you could just see he was ready to go," said former teammate Bill Virdon, who managed Stargell in 1972-73. "He was sleek and slender and fast then, and his power came more as he got bigger. But the leadership, that was always there." Read more Audio
