Events on and off the baseball diamond 1918 Babe Ruth and the World Champion The NL, having sat still for the loss of george sisler, is furious;
http://www.1918redsox.com/season.htm
The Season January 4 The Chicago Cubs acquire Boston Braves ace Lefty Tyler in exchange for veterans Larry Doyle, Art Wilson and $15,000. Tyler will win 19 games for the Cubs this year. January 8 Buck Herzog, in New York Giants manager John McGraw's doghouse since last September, is traded to the Braves for Larry Doyle (acquired from the Cubs four days ago) and pitcher Jesse Barnes. January 9 Brooklyn sends OF Casey Stengel and infielder George Cutshaw to Pittsburgh for pitchers Burleigh Grimes and Al Mamaux and infielder Chuck Ward. January 10 Connie Mack alarms Philadelphia by dealing Stuffy McInnis, the last player in his $100,000 infield, to Boston for 3B Larry Gardner, OF Clarence "Tilly" Walker, and catcher Hick Cady. ... Acknowledging that Ty Cobb, Speaker, and Collins are all good ball players, Cap Anson picks his all-time team, leaving them off. In the current issue of The Sporting News, Anson selects, Buck Ewing and King Kelly (C); Amos Rusie, John Clarkson, Jim McCormick (P); himself (1B); Fred Pfeffer (2B); Ed Williamson (3B); Ross Barnes (SS); Bill Lange, George Gore, Jimmy Ryan, and Hugh Duffy (OF). January 22 The Yankees trade pitchers Nick Cullop and Urban Shocker, catcher Les Nunamaker, 3B Fritz Maisel, and infielder Joe Gedeon to the St. Louis Browns for pitcher Eddie Plank and 2B Del Pratt. Plank, a 300-game winner, retires, but Pratt gives New York three good years at 2B. Shocker is the gem, posting four straight seasons of 20 or more wins in St. Louis. Maisel, who the Yankees refused to trade in early 1916 for either Boston's Tris Speaker (and cash) or Chicago's Joe Jackson, will hit just .232 in 90 games.

KEN WILLIAMS
By Robert Nishihara Stats from www.baseball-reference.com
Grants Pass is the kind of small town you pass through without a second thought on the way to bigger, more recognizable places.  This sleepy logging town in Southern Oregon exists quietly, unknown to most but comforting and special to a select few. I suppose in that way it is, indeed, fitting that Ken Williams was born in Grants Pass and, after his major league baseball career was over, that he returned there to spend the rest of his days.  Kenneth Roy Williams, the man with the generic name, born in a no-name town in the Northwest, seemed destined to fade into public oblivion despite the fact that he may be one of the greatest hitters no one has ever heard of. That he played long before television and even before radio broadcasts of games were made popular likely has something to do with this lack of notoriety.  That he played for a long-time doormat franchise, the St. Louis Browns, likely has even more to do with it.  But whatever the reason, Ken Williams deserved better, and his accomplishments on the field bear that fact out. Unfortunately, Williams' baseball legacy is now largely reduced to the pages of historical baseball data and the stacks of yellowed, long-ago box scores compiled by those who originally bore witness to his baseball-playing prowess.  However, in that jumble of numbers, a picture of Ken Williams, the slugging outfielder for the hapless St. Louis Browns, does emerge.  And it is a picture of a pretty damn good baseball player.

December 9, 2004 Review: “The Sizzler”
by Steve Lombardi Baseball history aficionados are familiar with many fun facts that stand out along the baseball timeline. For example, many fans of the game know that:
  • Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey had a lengthy and significant relationship. Tom Seaver's first professional contract was voided by baseball officials. Dave Winfield went straight from college to play in the major leagues - totally bypassing the minor leagues. Babe Ruth started out in the big leagues as a pitcher - and then became a full-time position player after briefly splitting time between the mound and the field. John Smoltz survived a severe injury and year-long absence from playing to resume a stellar career. Rickey Henderson went to play in the minor leagues after a long and distinguished major league resume. Charlie Lau, once done playing in the majors, became a hitting coach renown for helping shape the career of a Hall of Fame batter. Bob Boone, himself being a big leaguer of vast tenure, had two sons that went on to play major league baseball.
But, how many hardball fans (even those zealous ones) would be able to name a

Main September 16, 2004 Ichiro Odds Suzuki had 1 hit last night. He now needs 25 hits in the Mariners 17 remaining games to break George Sisler's record of 257 hits in a season. I estimate that he has 74 AB left. The odds continue to fall: Chance of 258 Hits Based on 2004 Based on Career Probability of Breaking Record 95% Confidence, Low End 95% Confidence, High End Posted by David Pinto at 09:01 AM Records TrackBack (0) Comments George Sisler has emerged from the graveyard of baseball records to claim what is hisa potentially unbreakable record is being assaulted after 82 years. George Sisler as Bill James and others point out had a problem with his eyes after the first five years of his careeer, after which he was just an average hitter; the first five years he was an unconscious hitter, hitting .400 twice. There is no telling what records he might have achieved had he not gone nearly blind, although I think James tries some extrapolations and we can do some Runs Created extrapolations based on the first five years and normal aging patterns to guesstimate. His son, Dick Sisler, hit a glorious pennant winning shot for the Phillies in the heat of the 1950 pennant race with the Dodgers which has largely been forgotten in the wake of the Bobby Thompson "shot heard round the world" of 1951. Dick spent his whole life trying to out do his father's records.
