By Kyle Sisler, as told to Louie Diaz Jr.
Hits of yesteryear For one Tokyo expat, Ichiro's groundbreaking season holds deeper meaning When I was 10 years old baseball consumed my life. I went to baseball camp during the summer, practiced in my garage in the winter, and collected baseball cards in my spare time.
One day after a Little League game, I went over to my teammate's house to check out his "Legends of the Game" card collection. While going through a pile I noticed a card with the name George Sisler. It struck me instantly because I had never met anyone else outside my immediate family with the same last name.
I borrowed the card and showed it to my father, who glanced at it indifferently. Undeterred, I then showed it to my grandfather, who took one long, appreciative look at my new prized possession. For the first time in my life, I would discover the baseball lineage running through my blood. It all started with a story from my grandfather.

George Sisler Biography
George Sisler Biography (1) The Sizzler: George Sisler, Baseball's Forgotten Great
Author: Rick Huhn
Hardcover - October 2004
"Gorgeous George" Sisler, a left-handed first baseman, began his major-league baseball career in 1915 with the St. Louis Browns. During his sixteen years in the majors, he played with such baseball luminaries as Ty Cobb (who once called Sisler "the nearest thing to a perfect ballplayer"), Babe Ruth, and Rogers Hornsby.
During his illustrious career he was a .340 hitter, twice achieving the rare feat of hitting more than .400. His 257 hits in 1920 is still the record for the "modern" era.
Now in The Sizzler, this "legendary player without a legend" gets the treatment he deserves. Rick Huhn presents the story of one of baseball's least appreciated players and studies why his status became so diminished. Huhn argues that the answer lies somewhere amid the tenor of Sisler's times, his own character and demeanor, the kinds of individuals who are chosen as our sports heroes, and the complex definition of fame itself.

October 6-13, 2004 Ichiro shows respect for family as he breaks Sisler’s record for number of hits in a single season Warm-up Question: What are you thankful for in your life this week? Seattle, Washington: Ichiro Suzuki, right fielder for the Seattle Mariners, spent this season in hot pursuit of George Sisler’s record for the total number of hits in a single season. Sisler’s record 257 hits, set in 1920, had stood for 84 years, until the final weekend of the 2004 season. Later, Ichiro was asked what he had said to Sisler’s family. Ichiro, speaking through his interpreter, explained that because of his language barrier, he wasn’t able to communicate much with them, but that he had expressed his thanks to them for coming all the way from St. Louis to Seattle to watch the game. He was touched by their presence, and honored that they had come to the game. Ichiro added to his record in the final two games of the season, ending with a total of 262 hits.

Saturday, October 2, 2004 Ichiro breaks 84-year-old record for hits in a season By DAVID ANDRIESEN
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER First he belonged to Japan. Then he belonged to Seattle. Now he belongs to history. Ichiro Suzuki achieved baseball immortality last night, eclipsing the 84-year-old record for hits in a season with hits in his first two at-bats at Safeco Field. The record is the most important historic achievement ever by a Seattle Mariner, mesmerizing the region and easing the bitterness of a dismal season. Ichiro was met with a dizzying array of flashbulbs with every pitch by Texas starter Ryan Drese, and he didn't wait long to make his mark. He chopped the fourth pitch of the first inning hard into the ground and it bounced over the head of drawn-in third baseman Hank Blalock. It was his 257th hit of the season, matching George Sisler's 1920 total. Mike Urban / P-I Ichiro Suzuki leads off the third inning by driving his record-breaking 258th hit of the season up the middle for a single off Texas pitcher Ryan Drese.

Overshadowed, underappreciated
George Sisler was one of top players of his era By Kirk Kenney
STAFF WRITER September 23, 2004

As an 8-year-old, Dave Sisler thought his father was the greatest. Or, at least, one of the greatest. With good reason. Ten of the 11 living Hall of Fame members gathered that day (taps was played to honor the 14 deceased members), according to newspaper accounts. In the photo, Sisler stood between Walter Johnson and Napoleon Lajoie and alongside Honus Wagner, Grover Cleveland Alexander and Tris Speaker. Sisler was enshrined that day with Eddie Collins and Willie Keeler. Dave Sisler, now 72 and living in St. Louis, recalls some special moments of the event he attended with his mother and father when he was 8. "I remember in the morning I was having breakfast and my dad gave me an old baseball to walk around with and get autographs from the players," said Sisler, who was born a year after his father retired in 1930. "I got a bunch of them. No one gave me any grief, and I was the only one in the room doing it."
Ichiro's quest Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners has a chance to set a record for hits in a season. The record is 257 by Hall of Famer George Sisler in 1920 (in a 154-game season). A look at the important numbers in Ichiro's chase:

by ruz In this issue of 19 to21, John Shiffert looks at the man behind one of the longest-standing major records in baseball. 19 to 21 No, that’s not the number of extra base hits Ichiro Suzuki #38, September 7, 2004 By John Shiffert News Item: September 22, 1930 – George Sisler plays his final major league game for the Boston Braves, a 6-2 loss to the Cubs. Seventy-four years after he left the majors, and 31 years after he died in Richmond Heights, Mo., at the age of 80, Hall of Famer George Harold Sisler is back in the baseball spotlight. The best player in the history of the American League St. Louis Browns, and the holder of one of baseball’s milestone records, Sisler and his record – 257 hits in a season – have been brought back to life by the right fielder for the Seattle Mariners, one Ichiro Suzuki. That’s because, although Sisler’s 1920 mark – set right after what is usually considered the end of the Deadball Era – was approached several times in the 10 years after he set it, no one has really threatened this particular mountaintop since 1930. Even with the major league schedule increasing from 154 to 162 games, the 240-level of hits in a season has only been reached three times since 1930; by Wade Boggs in 1985 (240), by Darin Erstad in 2000 (also 240) and by Suzuki in 2001 (242).
