Players like George Sisler seem finally to be getting their due in the baseball bio realm. Sisler was a great star who was a quiet person, and who never played in New York. He thus missed out on the publicity machines that have made much lesser players famous.
Rick Huhn serves us well by giving us an unusually balanced baseball bio. Unusual in that he tells us the on-field, and the private stories of the man, as well as they are likely to be told. Sisler left private memoirs which his family made available to the author. These give the insight that most baseball biographers either don't have, or don't bother to try to access.
Huhn does get a number of baseball facts confused: players names, stats, scores, historical firsts. Strangely, he makes the same error twice, calling Dolf Luque in 1930 a "pitching prospect", and Joe Black in 1954 a "Dodger prospect." These star pitchers were both in their waning years at these points in time. On the whole, though, the research is thorough.

Rick Huhn '69 Publishes The Sizzler: George Sisler, Baseball's Forgotten Great The Sizzler: George Sisler, Baseball's Forgotten Great Early in his FBI career, Rick wrote two political thrillers. Although he was able to find literary agents, rare for first-time authors, publication eluded him. As an assistant attorney general in the 1970's, he co-authored a book on Ohio's Drug Abuse Control Act. He eventually returned to sports writing through the intercession of a fellow attorney. The co-worker introduced Rick to George Sisler, Jr., a former Columbus Clippers general manager and son of the baseball legend. Their lunch blossomed into an enthusiastic cooperative collaboration. Rick was ultimately given access to the senior Sisler's unpublished memoir. Rick began the project working at home on Friday afternoons. As his research took him to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, Library of Congress, University of Michigan archives, and Boston, he spent less time lawyering and more time writing.

http://www.jockbio.com/Classic/Sisler/Sisler_bio.html
Many generations have passed since baseball fans have heard the name George Sisler uttered as often as it was in 2004. With Ichiro Suzuki mounting an assault on his single-season hit record, the Hall of Fame first baseman found himself back in the spotlight, some 65 years after his Cooperstown induction and 31 years after his death. George was unquestionably the finest player in the history of the St. Louis Browns franchise, yet baseball historians have long debated just how good he really was. Like Ty Cobb and Grover Cleveland Alexander, he brought dead-ball skills into the live-ball era and continued to flourish, which endeared him to old-time baseball fans. Unlike those immortals, however, he was never regarded as a dominant player, despite what the statistics say. This dynamic brings up difficult questions with equally complex answers: Who was George Sisler and does he deserve to be counted about baseball's all-time greats? George Harold Sisler was born on March 24, 1893, in Nimisila, Ohio, a small town near Manchester and Akron. His parents, Cassius and Mary Sisler, were part of one of the most prominent families in this area. George's grandfather had parlayed his success in farming into a small grocery store empire. George's uncle was mayor of Akron for a time. Cassius ran the region's largest mine.

Worth a look, Baseball-almanac presents: Record Books, Famous Firsts and Feats Top 10 Lists The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes.

He is probably the only player other than Gehrig who can reasonably be considered the greatest first baseman ever in terms of peak value. The reason I say that is that the other top contenders, most notably (Jimmie) Foxx and (Willie) McCovey, were the same type of players that Gehrig was, and thus they can be directly compared to him, a comparison that they clearly lose. But the man I'm referring to was a different type of player, he didn't have the home run pop, but he hit for a higher average, was faster and a better defensive player than Gehrig, and the comparison between the two is not easy.
-Bill James, The Historical Baseball Abstract.
Who, you ask, was this great first baseman?
George Sisler was a star pitcher at Central High School in Akron, Ohio, when he signed his first contract at the age of 17, making him the property of Akron, a club in the Ohio-Pennsylvania League and a farm team of Columbus. Akron then sold Sisler to Columbus, which in turn sold the southpaw to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates demanded that Sisler join the team after high school graduation but Sisler had other plans, enrolling at the University of Michigan instead, where he played for the legendary Branch Rickey. Pittsburgh appealed to the National Commission, the forerunner of the commissioner. The Commission ruled that Sisler's contract was null and void (because at 17 years old he was legally too young to have signed a contract without his parents' consent) and declared the young pitcher a free agent. The future first baseman signed with the St. Louis Browns, who had hired Rickey to manage the team, and joined them in June of 1915 after three successful seasons with his college squad.

George Sisler’s first full season was 1916, a year in which the American League batting average was .248. The twenty four year old Sisler batted .305 or .057 points higher than the league average. From 1917-1919, Sisler’s combined batting average was .349 compared to the league’s .256, which is an incredible .093 points higher than the league average and the league’s .256 average is really less because Sisler‘s averages were part of the calculation.
