Bret Saberhagen The Car
Recent discussion about Game 5 of the 1999 ALDS reminded me of my first car. Right after I graduated from college, I moved back to Boston from Westchester, with a low-paying internship and exactly no clue what I was going to do with my life (I still have trouble with the last part, and now I'm making no money to study stuff - ah, progress).  I had some cash, and places to go, but my mom's minivan (A bright red Ford Windstar that I liked to call the Big Red Machine) simply wasn't going to cut it.  So, that cash went to a neighbor, and in return, I received my very first car.
A Car that Looks Like Bret Saberhagen the Car Dark blue, 1990 Toyota Camry station wagon.  It wasn't much to look at, and it had some issues; before I even got to drive it, the steering column and brakes were replaced, new tires put on, a headlight fixed.  But once it got patched up, off we went.  It took me to work, drove me to visit friends in New York, moved with me to my first two apartments.  But none of this is the story of how my car got its name. (click for more)
In early August, 2000, toward the end of my internship, I was working down in Milton helping to run a conference.  My car came in handy running errands, making deliveries, and showing a Kazakh high school teacher around town, but its biggest job that week was picking up our main speaker from Logan.  I cleaned the car up nice for that one, even got it washed; a beat-up station wagon isn't much to look at, so you have to work hard to give it aesthetic dignity.  Unfortunately for me, I made one mistake: after the speaker had been picked up and delivered, I failed to turn off the headlights, which had gone on in a tunnel and never got turned off.

Baseball Fever General Baseball Hall of Fame Talk PDA View Full Version : baseball junkie 10-12-2003, 11:00 AM I’m interested in knowing people’s opinions about players from the 80s and 90s who enjoyed stellar careers, and perhaps merit Hall of Fame consideration, but who will inevitably fall short of induction.
I’d hope we can keep this thread from becoming a debate merely about the worthiness of certain candidates. What I’m really interested in is people’s thoughts on the near misses – player who put up great numbers, achieved great feats, but just aren’t quite Cooperstown caliber players. Here is my, by no means exhaustive, list.
Side note: some overlap into the late 70s or early 00s is acceptable. Please try to avoid sure-fire HOFers, i.e., Jeff Bagwell, Frank Thomas, Rafael Palmeiro, Gary Sheffield, Dennis Eckersley, Roger Clemens, etc.

Sports June 30, 2005 Calabasas looking to make the most of its summer baseball schedule
By Steve Ames
Special to the Acorn After watching his team compile a 4-21 record during spring varsity season, Calabasas High head baseball coach Bret Saberhagen is encouraged by how the Coyotes are playing this summer in the Valley Invitational Baseball League. Even after the Coyotes’ 7-5 loss to the visiting Saugus Centurions Tuesday, Saberhagen had mostly positive things to say about the progress Calabasas is making on the diamond. “We still have a good team,” Saberhagen said. “We had a very good freshman team. They ended up winning league. We’ve got a good nucleus of guys and another good freshman group coming in. The sophomores from last year got a lot of playing time and they’re going to get a lot more this year.” Saberhagen, whose team dropped to 8-6 in VIBL play, said he expects a good season next year from many of the team’s juniors.

TEAM HISTORY Kansas City Royals Baseball History Kansas City Royals, professional baseball team and one of five teams in the Central Division of the American League (AL). Named after Kansas City’s annual American Royal Livestock Parade and Pageant, the club plays at Ewing Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, and wears uniforms of white and blue.
In 1969, two years after Kansas City lost its major league club, the Athletics, to Oakland, pharmaceuticals millionaire Ewing Kauffman was awarded an American League franchise. Kauffman wasted little time in creating the Kansas City Royals. During the team’s first year of play outfielder Lou Piniella won the 1969 AL rookie of the year award. Two years later the Royals stole a league-high 130 bases.
In 1973 rookie George Brett joined Amos Otis and John Mayberry in the Royals’ lineup, which was backed by strong pitching from Steve Busby, Dick Drago, and Paul Splittorff. Brett won his first of three AL batting titles in 1976, and under manager Whitey Herzog the Royals captured the first of three consecutive division championships. In the AL Championship Series, however, the Royals lost to the New York Yankees three years in a row. First-year manager Jim Frey steered Kansas City to the club’s first pennant in 1980. Brett had a sensational year, hitting .390, driving in a league-high 118 runs, and winning the AL most valuable player (MVP) award. Although the Royals swept the Yankees in the AL Championship Series, the team fell to the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series.
