The players are ranked by position, so first basemen are not compared to second basemen, etc. The players are then broken down into Type A, Type B and Type C (and the rest). When a team loses a free agent who is ranked in one of the three categories, they receive compensation as follows (if and only if they offered that player arbitration before he signed with his new team):
  • Type C. Team losing player gets a supplemental pick after the second round.
If a team doesn't offer arbitration to their free agent, they get nothing when he signs with another team. This brings up the next question of why don't the teams always offer arbitration? The answer is, they might simply be afraid he'll accept it. It's a gamble some teams aren't willing to take, even if it seems likely the player is heading out of town. Teams must offer arbitration by Dec. 7.

Everts To Miss Most of '05 Season By John Manuel
September 16, 2004 The Expos had plenty of good news in their farm system the last six months, but the season ended on a down note. Righthander Clint Everts, the fifth overall pick in the 2002 draft, had Tommy John surgery last week. The surgery, performed by Dr. James Andrews in Alabama, and the subsequent rehabilitation will shelve Everts for most, if not all of the 2005 season. Everts, 20, spent most of the season at low Class A Savannah before finishing with four solid starts at high Class A Brevard County. He went 7-3, 2.49 with the Sand Gnats, striking out 103 and walking just 21 in 90 innings while holding opponents to a .206 average. He went 2-2, 2.25 with the Manatees in 20 innings, walking 10 and striking out 19. Overall, the 6-foot-2, 170-pounder went 9-5, 2.45 with 122 strikeouts and 31 walks in 110 innings, allowing just 83 hits. "It was a gradual deal; there was no pop on one pitch or anything like that as we understand it," Expos farm director Adam Wogan said. "There was some minor arm soreness, and we had him go see Dr. Andrews to get checked out. Dr. Andrews found some damage and recommended surgery, and it was Tommy John.

But the youngest person to ever play baseball keeps changing. GILBERTO 12/10/19636/11/1983 saberhagen, bret 04/11/1964 4/4/1984 RIJO, JOSE 05/13/1965

Youngest Active Player Chronology When Hall-of-Famer Harry Wright played his first game of the 1871 season on May 5, 1871, he became the oldest person to ever play major league baseball. That's not to say that nobody ever took the field who was older than Wright's thirty-six. Rather, no player who was born earlier than Wright has ever played in the majors. Even with expansion, it's unlikely that Wright's record will be broken. As far as I know, there isn't a person alive who was born earlier than January 10, 1835. Pitcher Fred Chapman was the youngest player to make his debut (14 years 7 months 29 days). But the youngest person to ever play baseball keeps changing. At the end of the 1998 season, that distinction belongs to Pirates thirdbaseman Aramis Ramirez. Born June 25, 1978, he's more than a year younger than Kerry Wood and almost a month younger than Mike Caruso. No doubt, someone younger than Ramirez will make their major league debut sometime next year. One of the reasons this list is interesting is it helps to answer a question I'm frequently asked "who was the first person to reach the majors who was younger than me?" If you were born on June 1, 1969, the answer is Ken Griffey. Here's the list of players who have held the title "Baseball's Youngest Player." Worth a look, Baseball-almanac presents: Record Books, Famous Firsts and Feats Top 10 Lists The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes.

History of the World Series - 1985 Jack Clark belted a single to left field, scoring McGee. Tito Landrum blooped a double down the right-field line, sending Clark to third. Cesar Cedeno was given an intentional walk, loading the bases. And then Terry Pendleton doubled down the line in left, sending Clark, Landrum and Cedeno across the plate. What had been a pitching masterpiece blew up in Leibrandt's face. Unable to bounce back in the last of the ninth at Royals Stadium, Kansas City went down to a stinging 4-2 defeat. Coupled with a Series-opening 3-1 defeat in the same ballpark at the hands of Cardinals lefthander John Tudor, Manager Dick Howser's Royals were in a two games-to-none hole. The deficit was hardly insurmountable. Or was it? The record books showed that seven previous teams had rebounded to win best-of-seven Series after falling behind 2-0. But those same record books also showed that no team had ever rallied to win the Series after losing the first two games in its home park. Howser entrusted 21-year-old righthander Bret Saberhagen with the job of righting the Royals' course when the all-Missouri fall classic resumed in St. Louis. Saberhagen, a second-year major leaguer who in '85 had emerged as one of the bright young talents in the majors as evidenced by his 20-6 record, didn't disappoint. Besides flashing television messages from the Royals' bench to his wife (who was about to deliver the couple's first child), Saberhagen flashed a message to the Cardinals: Kansas City was down but far from out. The pitcher's missive came in the form of a six-hit, eight-strikeout performance. Frank White socked a two-run homer and a run-scoring double in support of Saberhagen, who was a 6-1 winner. Former Cardinal Lonnie Smith got Kansas City rolling in the fourth inning with a two-run double off Joaquin Andujar that snapped a scoreless tie.

"The strongest thing baseball has going for it today is yesterdays." - LAWRENCE RITTER, Author of The Glory of Their Times Beating the Braves, 3-2, Giant hurler George Wiltse runs his career record to 12-0. 'Hooks' dozen consecutive victories establishes the record for the most wins at the start of a career for a starter. The Braves play their ninth consecutive doubleheader. The streak, which began on September 4th, sees the team lose five in a row, including four to the Giants. During the fifth inning of the second game of doubleheader, a giant swarm of gnats engulfs Ebbets Field causing the game to be postponed. At Ebbets Field Cardinal starter, Cloyd Boyer, hurts his arm while warming up and is replaced by Red Munger. The reliever goes the distance beating the Dodgers, 6-2, getting credit for a complete game, but not for a game started.
