  • You know how bad my voice sounds— well it feels just as bad. The only real game— I think— in the world is baseball. There's been so many lovely things said about me, and I'm glad that I've had the opportunity to thank everybody. Thank you.

  • All ballplayers should quit when it starts to feel as if all the baselines run uphill. All I can tell them is pick a good one and sock it. I get back to the dugout and they ask me what it was I hit and I tell them I don't know except it looked good. As soon as I got out there I felt a strange relationship with the pitcher's mound. It was as if I'd been born out there. Pitching just felt like the most natural thing in the world. Striking out batters was easy. Baseball changes through the years. It gets milder.

Entire books have been written on the career and life of George Herman Ruth, known to fans as "The Babe" or "The Great Bambino" or even as the "Sultan of Swat." One of the most dominant hitters in the game, Ruth could have also been the most dominant pitcher. In fact, his World Series pitching statistics are nearly as impressive as his World Series hitting statistics. He pitched 3 games in the series, a total of 31 innings, and compiled a 3-0 record and a 0.87 ERA. His ERA still ranks third all-time for career series statistics. As a batter, he collected 42 hits in 41 games with 15 home runs and 33 RBI. He compiled a .326 career average in the World Series. The following are just some of the exploits and achievements of Babe Ruth: : Just after he turned 19, Babe Ruth signed a $600 contract with the minor league Baltimore Orioles. He immediately showed his promise, finishing the season with a 22-9 record and a 3.23 ERA. He pitched in four games that season for the Red Sox, finishing 2-1.

Can you tell me anything about this Babe Ruth-signed baseball from 1928?
Paul Brateen

Simeon Lipman replies:
From the photograph, this appears to be a secretarial signature, not in the Babe's own hand, although the ball is from his time. It was common then, as it is now, for a batboy or someone officially with the team to sign for a player. Ruth did commercial endorsements (he had a deal with Goodyear) and might have had 100 balls to autograph at a sitting. If he'd had a rough night, someone would help him sign them. There was no monetary value to these balls back then, just the thrill of having an "autograph." If the signature were truly Ruth's, the ball would be worth $10,000 or more in its present condition. Yours, with its original box, is worth about $200. But its real value is as a piece of history.

Babe Ruth's Own Book of Baseball
By George Herman Ruth Introduction by Jerome Holtzman "The Babe lives. He died in 1948, almost a half century ago. Roger Maris broke his one-season home run record in 1961 and thirteen years later Hank Aaron passed him in most home runs, lifetime—events that should have lost the Babe in the fog of time. Instead, he is as large as ever. . . . [This is] a remarkably good book."—Jerome Holtzman Babe Ruth remains the most popular player in the history of baseball. The slugger for the New York Yankees established a home run record in the 1927 season, just a year before joining the league of authors. Babe Ruth's Own Book is a who's who of old-time greats—Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, and many others. It describes the Babe's rise from poverty to stardom, catching his image and voice as freshly and permanently as pen and ink can. In a no-nonsense style, the Babe describes the ins and outs of the game, touching all bases and loading up the reader with priceless information and advice. The surprise is that so little about the sport has changed except the size of the players' salaries. Jerome Holtzman, in a lively introduction, tells some good stories about Babe Ruth. The senior sports columnist for the Chicago Tribune, Holtzman is the author of

Sentinel staff writer The Watsonville Aggies baseball team knew how to win. Celebrating was another story. "We met at the mound, but we never went to the ground," shortstop Pascual Del Real said. "We were all jumping up and down like a bunch of confused little boys." The Aggies ended a long Babe Ruth League 16-18s World Series drought by rallying to defeat national power San Gabriel Valley, 7-4, in the Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament on Tuesday night at Watsonville High. The Aggies last reached the World Series in 1983, before the current batch of Aggies were even born. Watsonville was unbeaten in the double-elimination tournament entering the final. It fell 6-0 to in the first game and trailed 4-3 in the sixth inning of the second game until Dave Newton hit a three-run triple in a 7-4 come-from-behind win. "It was something I’ll always remember," said Aggies outfielder Paul Brock, a recent Aptos High graduate. "I’ve never won anything that big before."
