BABE RUTH
In a time when baseball, reeling from the 1919 Black Sox scandal, declining attendance and declining credibility, needed a revitalization, Babe Ruth's bat saved the day. The most visible, dominating, and popular athlete in American history, the Babe turned baseball on its head, sparking fan interest and excitement, and the birth of the most enduring dynasty in sports history. The Roaring Twenties were epitomized by the Yankee slugger.

FEATURE
The Babe Ruth Debate
This feature was written by Tara Krieger
Major League Baseball is engaged in an argument. The teams can't decide who exactly holds claim to the greatest baseball player of all time Babe Ruth.
The New York Yankees argue that they have the most right to Babe Ruth: after all, he spent the most and best years of his playing career there, calling his home park Yankee Stadium (not to mention lived in New York), and was inducted into Cooperstown wearing a Yankees cap.
But the Baltimore Orioles say that they own the Babe: he was born, raised, grew up, and went to school in Baltimore, and wasn't the first organized professional team he played for called the "Baltimore Orioles"? Besides, the Yankees were called the "Baltimore Orioles" their first two years of existence.
And the Boston Red Sox say, "Hold on, we were his first major league team. He started on the Red Sox as a pitcher, and we were the ones who converted him into a slugger, not the Orioles, or the Yankees, or anybody."

Career Pitching Stats Career Hitting Stats Other Resources Ruth was a uniquely American hero, the subject of many tall tales, most of them true. Sportswriter Paul Gallico called him "a swashbuckler built on gigantic and heroic lines," and Heywood Broun punned, "The Ruth is mighty and shall prevail." He first learned to play baseball at St. Mary's Industrial School, where his parents placed him when he was eight years old. Ruth showed such promise as a left-handed pitcher that Jack Dunn, owner of the minor-league Baltimore Orioles, signed him to a contract and became his legal guardian in 1914. His first professional appearance came in an intra-squad game, when he hit the first of many gigantic home runs. A Baltimore sportswriter described it: "The next batter made a hit that will live in the memory of all who saw it. That clouter was George Ruth, the southpaw from St. Mary's school. The ball carried so far to right field that he walked around the bases." In fact, Ruth crossed the plate before the right fielder even picked the ball up. Dunn was forced to break up the team and sell off his players before the season end. The AL's Boston Red Sox paid between $20,000 and $25,000 for Ruth. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound youngster appeared in five games with the team after spending most of the season with a farm club and became a starting pitcher in 1915.

BABE RUTH Baseball Player Ruth is the most celebrated player in baseball history. A home run king and fan favorite, Ruth was the first in a line of iconic New York Yankees which included Lou Gehrig Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle . Ruth began his career as a pitcher but moved to the outfield, where he gained fame as a slugger. After the Boston Red Sox sold him to the Yankees in 1920, Ruth became the most famous athlete in America. Ruth's larger-than-life personality (including a prodigious fondness for food and drink) was a hit with fans, and Ruth is often credited with making baseball the dominant American sport of its time. Ruth retired in 1935; he held the single-season record for home runs (60) until fellow Yankee Roger Maris hit 61 in 1961, and the career record (714) until Hank Aaron passed him in 1974. In 1948, like Gehrig before him, Ruth had an emotional farewell at Yankee Stadium, with the Yankees retiring his uniform number 3. He died of throat cancer two months later.
Extra credit : Ruth was nicknamed "Babe" by teammates on his first pro team, the Baltimore Orioles... Other nicknames included "The Bambino" and "The Sultan of Swat"... The Red Sox did not win a World Series for 85 years after selling Ruth to the Yankees, a drought known as the Curse of the Bambino. However, the Sox broke the 'curse' by winning the World Series in 2004... Four Americans now have surpassed Ruth's single-season home run record:

Babe Ruth's "Called Shot" Legend
NEW and Improved!
Did the Babe really predict his most famous home run?
You may never know ... until you have seen this film! A legend was born when New York Yankee Babe Ruth faced Chicago Cubs pitcher Charlie Root at Wrigley Field on October 1, 1932, in the fifth inning of the third game of the World Series. Ruth is said to have successfully predicted - in words and gestures to the outfield - that on the next pitch he would hit a home run. Newspaper reports and eyewitness accounts of the day differ radically and no photographic proof has ever surfaced in the intervening 66 years. Yet the legend of Ruth's "Called Shot" has been widely known and hotly debated across five generations. Root dismissed the legend to his death. Ruth, over his lifetime, offered several different accounts of his own fantastic feat - each one a little more dramatic than the last.
