RUTH, BABE
, baseball player with Boston Red Sox (1914-1919), New York Yankees (1920-1934), and Boston Braves (1935). George Herman ("Babe") Ruth was the greatest player in baseball history and one of the outstanding American celebrities in the years between the two world wars. Ruth's personality merged with his extraordinary baseball skill and the public demands of the new consumer culture to create a larger-than-life figure—a hero of popular mythology. Within baseball Ruth's legend has four sources. First, he is the only player in history to have mastered completely the two antagonistic sides of the game: pitching and hitting. Thus Ruth was already a marvel when he further astounded the baseball world in 1920 by hitting not only more home runs than any previous player but more than any other team in the American League. Prior to Ruth's home run explosion, baseball strategy had been built around single runs: "scientific" batting (bunts, hit-and-run plays, place hitting), the stolen base, and the careful calculations of "inside baseball." By demonstrating the potential of a baseball offense centered on power, Ruth pioneered a reshaping of the game itself in the 1920s—and the rest of the twentieth century. Third, the daily drama of Ruth's home run hitting in 1920-1921 and beyond helped deflect public attention from the sordid, unfolding "Black Sox" betting scandal and focus it on baseball's playing fields, so that the game's popularity grew enormously in the decade. The legend that Ruth "saved" baseball is overstated, but it does carry some truth.

Ruth, Babe
(George Herman; ), baseball player. Ruth hit sixty home runs in the 1927 season, a record that stood until Roger Maris hit sixty-one in 1961. Called the "Sultan of Swat" and the "Bambino," fans filled the ballparks to watch Ruth play. He helped lead the New York Yankees to four world championships and led or tied the American League in home runs twelve times. Originally a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, Ruth won twenty-three games in 1916 and helped them win the AL pennant, but he was sold to the Yankees in 1920, where he was switched to the outfield. He had 714 career homers and compiled a .342 lifetime batting average. Ruth was elected to the baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.

Introduction
Print Preview of Section Ruth, Babe (1895-1948), American professional baseball player, one of the most gifted and popular players in the history of baseball. While Ruth was playing for the New York Yankees in the 1920s and 1930s, his legendary home run hitting feats dominated the national pastime. Ruth’s love for baseball, generosity, and dramatic rise from humble beginnings endeared him to fans, and he is one of the greatest sports heroes of American culture. II
Childhood
Print Preview of Section The son of a tavern owner, George Herman Ruth was born in Baltimore, Maryland. After spending several troubled years growing up on the streets of the city’s waterfront, seven-year-old George was placed in Saint Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, an orphanage and reform school. Brother Matthias, a strict Roman Catholic priest at Saint Mary’s, taught him to play baseball. Although George was left-handed, which made it difficult for him to throw out runners stealing second base, he eventually became a catcher for the Saint Mary’s team. He also played first base, third base, and in the outfield when needed.

Ruthian Tales
Print Preview of Section Ruth’s most famous hitting feat occurred in his last World Series. In the third game of the 1932 fall classic, Ruth batted against Chicago Cubs pitcher Charlie Root in the first inning and hit a three-run homer. With the game tied 4-4 in the fifth inning, Ruth again faced Root, with the boos and catcalls of Wrigley Field fans ringing in his ears. After Root threw two called strikes past him, Ruth appeared to point toward the centerfield wall, a gesture interpreted by many onlookers as a prediction—Ruth “calling his shot.” Indeed, to everyone’s amazement, Ruth slugged Root’s next pitch deep over the centerfield wall. Since then, people have debated whether Ruth truly predicted his home run. As Ruth’s legend grew, off-the-field escapades occasionally brought him unwanted notice in the press, angered Yankee officials, and detracted from his performance on the field. For example, stories of all-night parties before games began to circulate, and he once allegedly ate so many hot dogs in one sitting that he made himself sick to his stomach. He was disliked by some opposing players, and even some of his own teammates, because of the attention he commanded and the high salary he earned.

Babe Ruth's popularity and fame were so widespread that even America's enemies knew of him. Almost a decade after he had bashed his last home run, his presence still was felt. Babe Ruth's record of 60 homers in 1927 stood up for 34 years. During World War II, when Japanese soldiers charged American troops, they would sometimes scream, "To hell with Babe Ruth." Not "to hell with FDR" or "to hell with Douglas MacArthur," but "to hell with Babe Ruth." What bigger compliment could an American receive? Ruth was a man of mythic proportions. He became even more than the ultimate American sports celebrity. He was "a unique figure in the social history of the United States," wrote Robert Creamer in Babe: The Legend Comes to Life . "For more than any other man, Babe Ruth transcended sports, moved far beyond the artificial limits of baselines and outfield fences and sports pages." The New York Times called Enrico Caruso "the Babe Ruth of operatic tenors" and Time magazine called Willie Sutton "the Babe Ruth of bank robbers." And even another sports icon was compared to him when Chicago Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf called Michael Jordan "the Babe Ruth of basketball."

Babe Ruth
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
George Herman Ruth February 6 August 16 ), better known as Babe Ruth and also commonly known by the nicknames The Bambino and The Sultan of Swat , was an American baseball player and United States national icon. He was one of the first five players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame and he was the first player to hit over 30, 40 and 50 home runs in one season. His record of 60 home runs in the season stood for 34 years until it was broken by Roger Maris in . He also was a member of the original American League All-Star team in . In 1998, The Sporting News named Ruth as Number One in its list of "Baseball's 100 Greatest Players." As discussed in the 1988 book, The Babe: A Life in Pictures , by Lawrence Ritter and Mark Rucker, it is more than mere statistical records that make Babe Ruth unequivocally the greatest baseball player of all time. In several ways, he changed the nature of the game itself. His exploitation of the "power game" compelled other teams to follow suit, breaking the monopoly of the "inside game" that had been the primary strategy for decades. Ruth was the focal point of the start of what has become statistically the greatest sports dynasty in history, the New York Yankees . His international fame helped fuel the rising interest in sports during the Roaring Twenties as the fan base expanded significantly and triggered major expansion of nearly all the ballparks in the major leagues.
