62. Pete Rose Reinstatement / Rule 21 / Major League Baseball
Should Major League baseball permit rose’s reinstatement, it would send themessage that the rules don’t apply to those capable of reaching prominence.

topnav('freedom'); subnav('on'); sectionhead('opinion'); sectionicon('story'); leftContents('story'); leftTableEnd('story'); storytext('section'); Pete Rose is undoubtedly one of the greatest and most exciting players in baseball history. Nicknamed "Charlie Hustle" for the gritty and determined way he played the game, Rose overcame an obvious lack of raw talent to eventually become the Major League record holder in many of baseball’s most prestigious statistical categories, including career hits, singles, at-bats and games played. He invented, or at least popularized, the head first slide. He never played a game at the end of which his uniform wasn’t dirty. Walked 1,566 times in his career, Rose never walked, but always sprinted to first base. Yet, Rose’s on-field legacy will be forever superceded by his callous disregard for the game he played, managed and claims to love so much. He broke baseball’s cardinal rule, which states, "Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible." (Major League Rule 21) For this, Charlie Hustle was "permanently" banned from baseball in 1989. And for this, Major League Baseball should balk at Rose’s current attempt at one more (and ultimate) free pass — to be reinstated to the game and inducted into its Hall of Fame.

(Photo: SI.com January 12th, 2004 By: Matthew McGowan What a difference a week can make. As many of our loyal customers know, I was very upset last Monday when I heard Pete Rose admit to betting on baseball games. Many of you who have visited this page in the past have read my defense of Pete against the Dowd Report , and therefore could understand my anger. I felt like I had been used. In fact, I sat right down last Monday night after the news had broke and wrote an article in which I expressed my anger, as well as my opinion that according to baseball's rules Pete Rose could never be allowed to manage again. As it turns out, I was not the only fan of Pete to feel this way. Based on his admission, coupled with excerpts from his new book "My Prison Without Bars", many fans and sportswriters lashed out against Pete saying he was unworthy for induction into Baseball's Hall of Fame (something I still didn't agree with) and should never be allowed anywhere near a professional baseball team again. To be honest, I was so mad I nearly skipped watching "Prime Time" on ABC last Thursday night, when Pete sat down with Charlie Gibson to attempt to explain himself. I'm glad I didn't.

Let him in! That was the jury's decision in a mock trial to decide whether Pete Rose should be admitted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. The trial took place July 17 at Harvard Law School. Broadcast by the cable sports channel, ESPN, the trial featured Alan Dershowitz, the Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law, for the prosecution and high-profile Los Angeles lawyer Johnny Cochran for the defense. Former Texas state judge Katherine Crier, now a TV journalist, presided. The trial took place in Ames Courtroom in Austin Hall, which was transformed into a television studio for the occasion with banks of lights glaring down from the ceiling and a TV camera, one of several, swinging over the audience on a 30-foot boom.

Sunday :: September 14, 2003 On Pete Rose's Reinstatement We were curious why Pete Rose was on our plane to Denver yesterayhe sat in the row in front of us. He is a really big, beefy guy. We couldn't figure out who he was at first, but after a few people approached for autographs, we figured it out. Anyway, this might have something to do with his Denver appearance: The John Elway golf tournament which is going on this week. From the Boulder Daily Camera Baseball Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt, who's also playing this week at the Elway Classic, has been one of the major big-name backers of Pete Rose in his bid to be reinstated by major league baseball. Schmidt, a former teammate of Rose, and Johnny Bench and Joe Morgan met this summer with commissioner Bud Selig to make their case for Rose, who was banned for allegedly gambling on the game. Rose "is a good friend and he needs support, so I've been working with the commissioner," Schmidt said Thursday, adding that Selig will likely announce a decision on the matter during the World Series. "I'm optimistic, but that's just my feeling," Schmidt said.
A decision is due on Rose this fall.

Monday :: January 05, 2004 Pete Rose Comes Clean on Betting In a new autobiography, My Prison Without Bars , Pete Rose admits for the first time that he bet on baseball games. He hopes to end his lifetime ban from baseball and be admitted into the Hall of Fame. Rose says he was a big-time gambler who started betting regularly on baseball in 1987 but never against the Reds, according to excerpts from the book released to Sports Illustrated for its issue that hits newsstands Wednesday. "Yes, sir, I did bet on baseball," Rose told commissioner Bud Selig during a meeting in November 2002 about Rose's lifetime ban. "How often?" Selig asked.
"Four or five times a week," Rose replied. "But I never bet against my own team, and I never made any bets from the clubhouse." "Why?" Selig asked. "I didn't think I'd get caught." Rose repeated his admission in an interview on ABC News' "Primetime Thursday," parts of which aired Monday on "Good Morning America." We give him credit for the honest answer. We sat in the row behind him a few months ago on a plane somewhere (he was in bulkhead and we were in row 2.) There was a steady stream of passengers coming up to him. He was polite to all of them. He wears a lot of gold jewelry. A lot. And he's a very beefy guy.

Completely. Rose has told the whole truth and is genuinely sorry for his actions.
Mostly. But there are still some issues Rose hasn't properly addressed.

(AP) Pete Rose is an angry man.
He feels he's done his part, confessed that he bet on baseball. But instead of absolution, he keeps hearing more condemnation: His apology came too late, was insincere, upstaged the Hall of Fame and brought him more money.
"Now you're coming clean, and it's not good enough," he said Thursday during a 30-minute interview with The Associated Press. "It's not right. So how can I win? How can I win if people aren't going to be fair with me?"
Now 62, his hair thinner and his tummy chubbier, Charlie Hustle craves a full, free and unconditional pardon from baseball commissioner Bud Selig. He wants to get into the Hall of Fame - but what he really wants is the chance to manage a major league team again. Rose says a reinstatement with restrictions would be unfair.

The Baseball Prospectus and Pete Rose
Yesterday, Baseball Prospectus broke the news that there's already a signed agreement between Pete Rose and Major League Baseball reinstating him for the 2004 season. As a baseball fan, this story interested me. Personally, I don't think Rose should be reinstated. I won't explain my reasons because anyone who's really interested knows why people on both sides feel the way they do, and it's just not interesting. The more interesting thing to me is that you'd never expect a story like this, a huge, important story, to be published first by the Baseball Prospectus. BP has always been about analysis, not news, so for them to break what would be the biggest baseball story of the season (to say the least) is shocking. Major League Baseball denied the story , but you'd expect that. For more background into how Baseball Prospectus found itself in the world of news reporting and news making, King Kaufman interviewed Will Carroll, one of the writers of the story, today for Salon. Main December 10, 2002 Pete Rose: There's an article on ESPN.com today that Pete Rose and Selig appear to be negotiating reinstatement of the all-time hit leader. Only Baseball Matters had a lot about Pete Rose earlier this winter. Start here and keep reading . The inclusion of the David Levens piece here is the best part of the series. I don't like Pete Rose. I never liked him as a player, and as I learned more about him as a person, I liked him even less. He wasn't someone who hustled; he was someone who was obnoxious about hustling. He was a singles hitter who could have walked more. Rickey Henderson without the speed or the power. One of my college roommates hated Pete Rose. We once got him a dart set and a Pete Rose poster for his birthday. When I joined a strat-o-matic league in the 1980's, I knew I had found my home when they burned Pete Rose's card before the draft. With my prejudices in mind, I don't think Rose should be reinstated. Bill James makes a great case that the Dowd report proves nothing, and I will not argue with James' conclusion on that. However, as David Levens piece points out, the Dowd report was probably trying to save a lot of people from embarassment. I think if we all knew what Rose was really like, he wouldn't get those standing ovations, and there wouldn't be much support for his induction into the Hall of Fame.
