Rose admits to lying in autobiography SI Exclusive More from My Prison Without Bars Flashback: The case against Rose Flashback: Pete's grim vigil NEW YORK (SI.com) In his new book, written with Rick Hill, My Prison Without Bars, Pete Rose admits for the first time publicly that he placed bets with bookies on Cincinnati Reds games as often as five times a week while managing the team in 1987. An exclusive excerpt of the autobiography will be published in this week's issue of Sports Illustrated, available on newsstands beginning Wednesday or online now to SI subscribers In the book, Rose claims that he previously made the same admission to commissioner Bud Selig 14 months ago. "Mr. Selig looked at me and said, 'I want to know one thing. Did you bet on baseball?'" Rose writes. "I looked him in the eye. 'Sir, my daddy taught me two things in life how to play baseball and how to take responsibility for my actions. I learned the first one pretty well. The other, I've had some trouble with. Yes, sir, I did bet on baseball.'" "How often?" Selig asked.

http://www.peterose.com/PetesBio.html
Peter Edward Rose was born April 14, 1941 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He grew up in Anderson Ferry, Ohio as one of four children to Harry and LaVerne Rose. Pete was encouraged as a young boy to participate in sports. His father, who played semiprofessional football, was the biggest influence on Pete and his sports career.
Rose spent his childhood playing baseball with friends and later played for his local little league team. He played both baseball and football at Western Hills High School. Rose played well in high school and signed a contract with the Cincinnati Reds after his high school graduation. He was assigned to play for the Reds minor league team in Geneva, New York. Rose improved his game, and was promoted through the ranks of the Reds organization for the next couple of years. During that time, he played for the Reds farm team in Tampa, Florida and also played for the Class B team in Macon, Georgia.
By the start of the 1963 season, Pete was the Reds' regular at second base. His hard working style prompted Hall-of-Fame Yankee pitcher Whitey Ford to label him "Charlie Hustle," a nickname that Rose would be known by for the rest of his career. He hit .273 that season and played in nearly every game. He was rewarded for his efforts that season and was named National League Rookie of the Year in 1963.

http://www.who2.com/peterose.html
PETE ROSE Baseball Player Pete Rose is one of the greatest professional baseball players in the history of the game and also one of the most controversial. Rose began playing professionally for the Cincinnati Reds in 1963, where he quickly earned the nickname "Charlie Hustle" for his work ethic and boundless enthusiasm. During his 24-year career he had many high points, including a career batting average of .303, a record-setting 4,256 hits, a 44 game hitting streak (1978) and three appearances in the World Series (twice with Cincinnati, 1975 and 1976, and once with the Philadelphia Phillies, 1980). Rose was all but guaranteed a spot in the Hall of Fame until 1989, when he was accused of betting on baseball. Although Rose denied it, the charges were proved and he was banned from baseball for life. He finally admitted that he had bet on baseball in his 2004 book, My Prison Without Bars
Extra credit : In 1963 Rose was named the National League's Rookie of the Year...In 1975 he was named World Series Most Valuable Player...Rose is most closely associated with Cincinnati, but he also played for Philadelphia (1978-83) and the Montreal Expos (1984)...During his career Rose played five positions: second base, right field, left field, third base and first base...It was Yankee pitcher Whitey Ford who gave Rose his "Charlie Hustle" nickname... Rose was manager of the Reds (1985-88) as well as a player.

Six days later, Rose joined the 3,000-Hit Club in typical "Charlie Hustle" fashion. The fiery Rose beat out an infield hit for #2999 and then followed with a line drive to left for #3000. Both hits came off Montreal pitcher Steve Rogers, a future teammate of Rose's when the all-time hit king briefly played with the Expos in 1984. While Rose would continue to play another eight seasons, retiring with a record 4,256 hits, the next member of the 3,000-Hit Club reached the mark in the final months of his career. Breaking Balls: Baseball's Inconsistent Stance on Rose by Derek Zumsteg
I've written a piece for this site on Pete Rose, Bill James, and the Dowd Report . It took me far too long to write it: I was reluctant to pursue the project, because the volume and tone of the hate mail anyone who writes about Rose gets is numbing. I dedicated myself to getting it done after Major League Baseball trotted Rose out as part of the MasterCard Major League Baseball Memorable Moments event . Rose got cheered, I made a snippy comment in an ESPN chat, and everyone moved on. But the scene continues to bother me. Baseball's treatment of Pete Rose under the leadership of Bud Selig has been shameful. Pete Rose bet on his own team. That act deserves the lifetime ban. Rose did other things that could warrant a lifetime ban. I'm not going to argue about that here, or if his hit record mitigates his conduct, or... any of that. I wouldn't vote for Pete Rose as a Hall of Famer if he was eligible and I had a vote, and I might not if he'd never acted badly, though it's hard to separate my arguments about his performance from talking about Pete Rose the package. I don't care. Rose is a fan favorite, I understand. He made a show of hustle, and everyone loves to see players make the most of their ability, to believe that for the price of their ticket, they're going to see the best athletes try their hardest to put on a contest. Rose had some great years. I understand those who appreciate Rose's contributions, and in a way I envy them their ability to look at it as being distinct from the later years and his personal weaknesses.

Rose Decides Not to Come to Cooperstown
'Hit King' to Stay Away from Induction
By Dave Sheinin Washington Post Staff Writer Sunday, July 31, 2005; Page E01 COOPERSTOWN, N.Y., July 30 Among the dozens of memorabilia shops that line this village's quaint Main Street, beckoning to the many baseball pilgrims in town this weekend places such as Seventh Inning Stretch, Legends Are Forever and America's Game is one store that appears to have no name. The sign at 91 Main St. came down a few days ago, the locals say, although everyone here knows the shop's name, and a credit card receipt provides the confirmation: Pete Rose Ballpark Collectibles. For the past month or so, folks here had been preparing for an appearance this weekend by Rose, baseball's exiled "Hit King," who has been banished from the game and, by extension, the Baseball Hall of Fame since being caught gambling on baseball in 1989.
