PETE ROSE
In the 1960s Pete Rose was a brash rookie who turned the derisive nickname Charlie Hustle into a badge of honor. In the 1970s he won World Series titles, an MVP, and challenged the greatest streak in baseball history. In the 1980s he became the most prolific hitter in history, managed his hometown team, and was banished from baseball for his indiscretions. In the 1990s and into the early 2000s, Rose pleaded his innocence and then recanted, admitting his guilt, hoping to get back into the game. Through it all Pete Rose maintained his station at the top of baseball headlines. He defined his era.

Proposals exchanged but many hurdles remain
ESPN.com news services
NEW YORK Pete Rose may finally be getting his second chance. Baseball's career hits leader could know by the end of the year if baseball will agree to end his lifetime ban which could make him eligible for the Hall of Fame. Rose and commissioner Bud Selig met secretly in Milwaukee on Nov. 25 and have been exchanging draft proposals that could end the ban, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark. Nothing has been agreed to at this point including whether or not Rose will be reinstated or regain eligibility for Hall of Fame induction and while any potential agreement could still fall apart, it's conceivable a deal could be reached by sometime next month. "It's a first hopeful sign,'' said Cincinnati Mayor Charlie Luken, who wrote twice to Selig last month urging reinstatement. Luken said he spoke to Bob DuPuy, Selig's top aide, on Nov. 27 and DuPuy said he would get back to him in about 30 days.

34. The Baseball Guru - Spotlight On Pete Rose Comparison
The following comparison of pete rose to his longtime teammates Bench, Morgan, Sabermetricians Ask how you can post your baseball analysis on
http://baseballguru.com/bbspot2.html
Player Spotlight Craig Tomarkin The following comparison of Pete Rose to his long-time teammates: Bench, Morgan, Foster and Perez, shows that he was not in the top 3 players on his own team (and we're not even including the pitchers on his team such as Tom Seaver). To illustrate the point, batting records of their best single season, top 5 seasons, top 10 seasons and careers were compared. Their seasons were sorted by the following criteria to determine which is their "best." And, with exception of the "career" totals, no season with fewer than 400 plate appearances was included. The players were sorted by OPS (on base avg + slugging avg) and by Total Avg (TA=batting avg + slugging avg). Then, the rankings were averaged to determine the total combined ranking. After studying the table below, also consider the intangibles. While I don't consider Pete Rose a superior fielder, to his credit, he won 2 Gold Gloves as an outfielder. His teammates winning Gold Gloves, Bench who won 10 and Morgan who won 5, are in the Hall of Fame, Foster and Perez didn't win any and are not. As far as base running, if you use stolen bases as a measure, Rose was adequate, but not superior. To me, while he was fun to watch (I admit I was a big Reds fan) and longevity is a big factor, by most fundamental and widely accepted statistical measures, he just wasn't as obvious a choice for the Hall of Fame as some make it seem. Sorry Pete!

John Holway JASON AND PETE A Rose by Any Other Name Would Still Be Thorny By John B Holway Pete Rose was never accused of, never admitted, and was never found guilty of altering the outcome of a game by illegal or unfair means. Yet Pete is banned from baseball for life. No lesser punishment should be meted out to Giambi and all other cheaters who got secret and unfair chemical help to win riches for themselves and championships for their teams. If they had been caught in the Olympics, the guilty party and all his teammates, innocent or not, would be stripped of their medals, denounced, disgraced, and banned. No mercy, no exceptions. Their gold medals would be expunged from the record, and the silver medallist would move up to gold etc. By the same token, the Yankees should be stripped of their 2003 and 2004 division championships. The Marlins, whose Gary Sheffield also used a steroid, should lose their 2003 World Series rings. After Barry Bonds started consorting with BALCO, he led the Giants to two division titles, both over the Dodgers. The record books should also take those flags away from San Francisco. Yes, the whole team.

Thursday, January 23, 2003 Sources: Rose admits he bet on baseball Turnabout after denials could lead to reinstatement
By John Erardi, John Eckberg and Robert Anglen
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Rose

Two of Pete Rose's friends say the former Reds great told them he is going to publicly admit he bet on baseball in exchange for full reinstatement to Major League Baseball. A third Rose acquaintance and baseball insider said Rose told him that he admitted to major league officials in November in Milwaukee to betting on baseball. The next big issue, say those friends, is whether Rose will have to admit he bet on Reds games. This is important, because it might affect Rose's ability to get a job in baseball. As manager of the Reds, Rose would have been in a position to influence the outcome of games by using an injured player or overusing pitchers. Jeff Ruby, a Cincinnati restaurateur who is close to Rose and one of the few people willing to go on the record with his remarks, told the Enquirer Wednesday that "based upon my relationship with Pete, I tend to believe the reports that are coming out" that Rose will soon be fully reinstated to baseball.
