Holding pattern
An elbow injury derailed Brian Rose's trip on baseball's fast track ... Now, he's waiting for a return ticket to the big leagues
By Bob Hanna, Standard-Times staff writer
He does not look back at what could have been. Neither does he look too far ahead to what might be.
He takes his turn with the Pawtucket Red Sox every five days, hoping to add more innings with each outing.
He is not discouraged, but neither is he satisfied. He doesn't complain and he doesn't criticize.
But if you listen long enough, you will hear the frustration, low and distant, like the muffled roar of the ocean in a sea shell held close to the ear.
"I don't expect anything, to be honest with you," said Brian Rose. "If I'm pitching well, I'll get called up. If I'm not pitching well, I won't. And that's the way it should be.
"I consider this year a rehab year. I don't have anything to prove here. I already proved myself in Triple A. I just want to stay healthy and get strong again."
You may recall that Rose was voted Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the International League while pitching with Pawtucket two years ago. He led the league in wins, 17, and ERA, 3.02.
He had indeed proven himself in Triple A, and was rewarded the following spring by being given a spot in the starting rotation for the Red Sox.

http://www.baseballmusings.com/archives/004126.php
Main August 12, 2003 Rose Story Denied According to ESPN.com , Bob DuPay, the COO of MLB, says the Baseball Prospectus story written about in the previous post isn't true.
Major League Baseball's chief operating officer, Bob DuPuy, shot down a Baseball Prospectus report Tuesday that claimed Pete Rose already has signed an agreement to be reinstated in 2004, calling it "totally unfounded, totally unsubstantiated" and "journalistically irresponsible." DuPuy, who spoke to ESPN.com's Jayson Stark, said there has been "no decision, no agreement, no nothing" clearing the way for Rose to return to the game next year. Baseball Prospectus, in a statement in response to DuPuy's denial, stood by its story, saying the report "was compiled using reliable sources. We believe that, in the end, our report will be found to be accurate."
So who do you believe? Here's a rule of thumb; don't trust unnamed sources. It's not that unnamed sources are wrong or untrustworthy per se, but there is no way for you and me to check their stories. ESPN quotes Bob DuPuy. I can call up the commissioner's office and check the veracity of DuPuy's quotes. I can't do that with the BP article. I don't know who gave them the story. Could it be someone with an agenda against the commissioner's office, or against Pete Rose? What are the biases of the source? Are there multiple sources? I don't know. I personally hope that Zumsteg and Carroll have this story right on. It will be a feather in their cap, and a great day for internet reporting. But until the story proves to be true, or I can know and trust their sources, I can't put my full faith behind that story.

http://www.baseballmusings.com/archives/005853.php
Main January 05, 2004 Rose Bet on Baseball The cat is officially out of the bag. ABCNEWS is reporting Rose admits in the interview that he bet on baseball . I don't understand this, however:
The revelation is also expected to be included in Rose's new autobiography, My Prison Without Bars, which is to be released the same day. In his interview with Primetime, Rose says he bet without knowing how drastic the penalties would be.
Rose never heard of the Black Sox? Rose never saw the rules against gambling that I believe are posted in every clubhouse? Please. By the way, there was a Baseball Prospectus story about Rose being reinstated last August. I reported on it here . That same day, Bob DuPay denied the story . Now, some are saying Rose's admission vindicates the BP story. Not quite. Here's what they said
Pete Rose and Major League Baseball have reached an agreement that would allow him to return to baseball in 2004, and includes no admission of wrongdoing by Rose , Baseball Prospectus has learned. According to several sources, Rose signed the agreement after a series of pre-season meetings between Rose, Hall of Fame member Mike Schmidt, and at different times, high-level representatives of Major League Baseball, including Bob DuPuy, Major League Baseball's Chief Operating Officer, and Allan H. "Bud" Selig, Commissioner of Major League Baseball.
(Emphasis added.) Obviously, there has been an admission of wrongdoing. Maybe that changed once the story got out. But it does bring into question BP's unnamed source. I'm sure we'll be hearing more from Will and Derek about this.

And when the winningest coach in North Carolina high school history tells you to go get them with a fastball, that’s exactly what you do. Greenville Rose coach Ronald Vincent got his point across, Flye got the out, and the future Pirate had locked up the Most Outstanding Player Award in the State 4A playoffs. The Rampants' 6-4 win at Zebulon's Five County Stadium over Charlotte Myers Park just added more luster to a rich heritage.

By Brian Bailey Chilly start for baseball ©2005 Bonesville.net Replay the audio archive of Tuesday night's Brian Bailey Show , with guest Vonta Leach Select clip You simply can’t describe how cold the wind felt for the first baseball practice of the year for East Carolina. It cut right through to the bone. Coach Randy Mazey sized up the conditions as a net positive. He explained it this way: “We know we’ll have a couple of early season games in this kind of weather, so this is a needed cold.” I needed a scorecard to figure out who the new players were. Sure, I recognized a couple, but this is a very different Pirate baseball team. Mazey said it was great to get back on the field. “The offseason goes by so slow, especially when you lose your last game,” Mazey said. “You just can’t wait to get back on the field. It seems like it has been six years since I’ve seen these guys play. We certainly have a lot of work to do and many questions to get answered. But it’s great to be back.” As cold as it was on Monday, it was colder Tuesday. Mazey says you can still get a lot of work done, despite the cold temperatures.

Some Thoughts On Pete Rose
After watching ESPN's intersting Pete Rose On Trial
  • The man bet on baseball. I'm not sure how you come to any other conclusion. There's just too much evidence. But he maintains that he didn't, and, let's face it, part of the issue here is that it's hard to build up emotion behind a guy who's almost certainly lying.
  • One argument says that the issue is very small: the Hall of Fame is just a museum, who really cares whether he's in or out? Might as well let him in on the basis of his accomplishment. On the other hand, it's a large issue: sport is always a metaphor for life, and the message sent by celebrating an unrepentant liar and (still) degenerate gambler is not a good one.
  • I didn't realize this, but someone made the point that Rose could be reinstated, but still not get in. He would still have to receive votes on 75% of the ballots cast, and given the older skew of baseball writers, that's far from a sure thing.
  • Bill "Spaceman" Lee isn't as clever as you'd hope. Bill James is about as boring as you'd guess. And Johnny Cochran is even more of an embarassing huckster than anyone could imagine.
  • My bottom line: it's all entertainment. And, in fact, the discussion around his exclusion is a form of entertainment as well (Ha: as I was writing this, Jeffrey Toobin let it slip: "If he hadn't gambled, or if he had just admitted it ... well, we wouldn't have this program (laughs) ..." So I say keep him out, just so that we can keep talking about it.
