The homers will not endure!
Okay, the gauntlet (or maybe the mitt) has now been thrown, and I am officially taking a stand as a contrarian, in opposition to the prevailing Conventional Wisdom throughout baseball punditry. I have now detailed, in previous Journal entries, my theories that the Home Run binge of the mid-1990s is subsiding (see April 1997 ), and that expansion does not automatically imply an increased surplus of hitting (see January 1998 ). I'm now prepared to go further out on my limb, by simply stating: No one will break Roger Maris's home run record this year, nor any time in the foreseeable future. And American League home run totals will not significantly increase in 1998 over 1997, and will more likely decline. Apparently, this view is heresy, this pre-season. The near unanimous consensus among all of the prognosticators is that the combination of another expansion season, with the prominence of Griffey, McGwire, and a few other candidates, virtually assures that the hallowed 61 mark will fall this year. And in general, another, perhaps new record, home run binge awaits us this season. I'm not buying it, for the reasons previously stated, and on which I'd like to elaborate a bit more. It's all about pitching.

May 10, 2004 Chattanooga, TN - Joe Dillon and Josh Willingham singled in successive runs in the seventh, then Jason Stokes blasted his fourth homer in four games to lead Carolina to its fifth straight win, 3-1 over Chattanooga at Bell South Park on Monday night. Carolina's five-game winning streak is its longest since winning nine in a row in the first half of 2003, and propelled the Mudcats into sole possession of second place in the East, trailing first-place Jacksonville by two games. Tennessee (17-14) is tied for third with the Lookouts, three games behind after starting the night tied for second with Carolina. Carolina (18-13) trailed ex-major leaguer Brian Rose (L, 1-2) 1-0 in the seventh before a pair of infield hits began the rally. Josh Wilson (1-4, R) singled behind second base, followed by an infield roller up the third base line by Chip Ambres (2-4, R, 2K) which was scooped up by Edwin Encarnacion. After Kenny Kelly raced down a deep drive to the right-centerfield wall by Jason Stokes (HR, 11, 1-4, RBI, GDP), Dillon (1-4, RBI) followed with a line single to left-center to score Wilson to tie the game 1-1. Willingham (1-4, RBI, K) drooped a single over shortstop for the tie-breaking hit. Stokes led off the ninth inning with a solo homer to left against reliever Travis Thompson, hit Southern League leading 11th, which set a franchise record for homering in four straight contests.

1997 Rookies
By Tom Tippett,
October 29, 1997 To help you begin thinking about the upcoming rookie drafts in your Diamond Mind leagues (or other fantasy leagues, for that matter), here is a list of all players who made their major-league debut in 1997. Because many leagues do not allow you to draft a player before he appears in the major leagues, chances are these players will be available in your league's draft. Some of these guys will help you right away, while others are highly-touted comers who were called up in September for the first time. Last year, I scooped up Nomar Garciaparra with my first draft pick (even though he didn't play much in 1996), and this year's list contains several players who are expected to do the same next year. This is a great place to find the guys who can begin to turn your team around or who can help sustain that dynasty that you've put together.

Brian Rose has become a full-fledged, honest-to-goodness major league pitcher and the Red Sox are glad to have him
By Bob Hanna, Standard-Times staff writer
From the back of the pack, if you cocked your head to one side and looked between two larger heads, you could see through the tangle of bodies, cameras and microphones, a smiling Brian Rose, his face aglow under the glare of the TV lights.
Dartmouth's Brian Rose. The Brian Rose who used to play on the Little League fields in Dartmouth. The one who caught our attention on the Dartmouth High School diamond.
The very same Brian Rose, who at this frozen moment in time was almost hidden by the forest of technological equipment in the center of the Red Sox clubhouse, where once Roger Clemens used to hold court.
Make no mistake. Brian Rose has arrived as a Major League pitcher. All you doubters who thought he wouldn't last in the Red Sox pitching rotation, forget it.
He may not always wear a Red Sox uniform in this revolving door world of free agency, but he's in the Big Leagues to stay, as long as his arm and his health hold out.
And the Red Sox know that.
