Then, in a chance encounter beneath the stands at Turner Field, the embattled Braves reliever saw the reporter who wrote the story about Rocker's views on gays, minorities and immigrants. Rocker Just like that, Rocker snapped. Now, he could find himself in trouble again. Rocker had a heated confrontation Sunday with Sports Illustrated reporter Jeff Pearlman, who said the pitcher threatened him and tried to get him banned from the Atlanta clubhouse. The Braves were investigating and Rocker's teammates were clearly disturbed by the latest outburst. A spokesman for Major League Baseball, which suspended Rocker for his original remarks, said no action was expected against the pitcher Monday. NEWSMAKERS John Rocker: maybe you've heard of him. He's had some media issues lately. By Kate Moran John Rocker. So you don't want to hear that name anymore? I'm going to say it anyway. John Rocker. John Rocker. John Rocker. I'm not going to explain who this man is. I don't need to. For the past (John Rocker) several months (John Rocker), the name has (John Rocker) been ubiquitous (John Rocker), springing up in newspaper headlines, talk shows, and radio programs all across the country. John Rocker hates minorities. John Rocker belittles people with blue hair. John Rocker maligns single mothers and AIDS patients. John Rocker has unpaid parking tickets. John Rocker shot JFK. John Rocker eats children and swallows small mammals whole. Rocker has indeed become the media's favorite punching bag—and fans are starting to get annoyed. After months of seemingly incessant condemnation, the public seems to want Rocker off of "Wanted" posters and back on the mound. When he returned home to Atlanta's Turner Field on Tues., Apr. 18, after a two-week suspension, Braves fans greeted the former scapegoat with a standing ovation. The public's response to Rocker turned quickly from outrage to approbation in part because he is a great pitcher. Last year, Rocker notched 38 saves—the second most in franchise history—and managed an awesome 104 strikeouts in 72 innings. During his suspension, the Braves lost six of 12 games, blew two saves, and registered a 5.14 earned run average (ERA). "He's a talented pitcher, and that's what this is really all about," manager Bobby Cox commented.

But the contexts are very different, so to cast him as john rocker just doesn t hold This didn t happen when organ music was the soundtrack of baseball!
    http://www.baseballmusings.com/archives/009537.php
Main May 19, 2005 Ortiz vs. Rocker I have to disagree with Rick Duncan at Pesky's Pole, who equates a statement David Ortiz made before a game with the statements on New York citizens that got John Rocker into so much trouble. Here's the statement Rick notes: Once, when Grady Little was manager, Ortiz stuck his head into the manager's office during the manager's daily pregame briefing with reporters and offered his playful assessment of what was to take place on the field that night. "We're going to kick their ass, drink their beer and rape their bitches." Here's what I wrote to Rick when he e-mailed me a copy of the article: To sum up my point better, Ortiz used an offensive metaphor in the context of battle, whereas Rocker spoke what he believed to be true. Ortiz didn't litteraly mean what he said, while Rocker did. That's a big difference to me. As always, I'm interested in your comments on the subject. Posted by David Pinto at 08:54 AM Baseball Jerks TrackBack (2) Comments I think you hit the idea square on the head. I also agree that people have a right to speak freely and have society at large brand him an idiot. Selig overstepped his bounds and pandered to public opinion. Something he is quite good at it. First John Rocker proved to the world that he was an idiot. Now it looks like Bud Selig's turn, but there's probably more to the story than meets the eye. According to the Associated Press, the Atlanta Braves pitcher has been "ordered by baseball to undergo psychological tests before deciding whether to punish the outspoken reliever for remarks he made disparaging gays, minorities and immigrants." Selig, the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, says he will await the results of the evaluation before deciding on any disciplinary action. In case you've been off-planet, Rocker recently made a variety of racist, xenophobic, and homophobic remarks to a Sports Illustrated reporter interviewing him for a feature story. John Rocker, costumed in blue Braves jersey, toting heavy if invisible baggage, came meekly from the shadows of shame Thursday. For 30 minutes, behind guarded locker room doors, the Sultan of Slur held a peace summit with Atlanta teammates. Word was, Rocker gasped to harness tears. His voice breaking, there was a mass apology for the relief pitcher's bigoted outburst. John's ultimate plea: "Please, guys, let me play." Atlanta manager Bobby Cox spoke briefly. So did Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Brian Jordan, Reggie Sanders and Terry Mulholland. Randall Simon, a first baseman from Curacao who says he was the "fat monkey" in Rocker rantings, received a more personal apology.

A Rocky Return: John Rocker Attempts a Comeback
    by Daniel Paulling

The move to Cleveland marked the beginning of the end for Rocker. His ERA was 5.45, never a good indicator. The Tribe lost their General Manager to Texas, who immediately re-acquired Rocker. In Texas, he did not fare well at all. Even when he left Atlanta, I cheered for the young lefty to be successful, out of respect for what he had done for the Braves, my favorite team.
A year later, Rocker went under the knife to repair a torn rotator cuff in his left (pitching) shoulder. He spent the entire year and 2004 rehabbing, both his arm and his image. The southpaw dedicated time to helping strike out multiple sclerosis, spent time working at the Ronald McDonald House, and with many outdoor organizations. Rocker also raised money for the Make a Wish Foundation and many local hospitals. For a team to sign him, Rocker thought it best to show that he was no longer the brash 24 year old that he once was, but now a mature 30 year old.
th , a rocky return finally began.

    Early career
Rocker graduated from Presbyterian Day High School in Macon, Georgia, in ; he threw three no-hitters during high school. He was soon drafted by the Atlanta Braves. He started showing wild antics similar to those of Mark Fidrych from the beginning of his career. After a rocky minor league career - in his fourth season ( ), he was still at Double-A Greenville - he was converted into a reliever. This worked well for him. The next year, he was promoted to the major-league club and ended up becoming the closer after an injury to Kerry Ligtenberg . He finished the season with an earned run average of 2.13 in 38 innings pitched.

PETROSKEY INVITES JOHN ROCKER TO SPEAK AT HALL
Dale Petroskey, Former Reagan administration operative, and current President of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown has done it again. First, he shocked baseball fans worldwide by canceling a 15th Anniversary celebration of the movie, Bull Durham for fear that Susan Sarandon or Tim Robbins might say something. Now, he has invited former Atlanta Braves pitcher, John Rocker to speak at the hall. For those who don't remember, In December of 1999, Sports Illustrated interviewed Rocker on his feelings toward, the New York Mets, and their fans. He used that interview to blast everything about New York in hateful language. His comments included, "Imagine having to take the [No.] 7 train to [Shea Stadium] looking like you’re [in] Beirut next to some kid with purple hair, next to some queer with AIDS, right next to some dude who got out of jail for the fourth time, right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It’s depressing." He didn't stop there, but went on to rant, "The biggest thing I don’t like about New York are the foreigners, You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. ... How the hell did they get in this country?” We asked Petroskey why he would not allow Robbins and Sarandon even to appear at the hall, but was offering Rocker a podium and a microphone. He told us, " I have said all I am going to say about canceling the Bull Durham event. I am inviting John Rocker to speak because I think John Rocker is a fine example of what Baseball and America are all about. He is only a controversial figure because those liberal Hollywood types in the media took his comments out of context."

    March 2, 2000
    Dear Future,
I'm going to have to recap this episode for you, boring as it is at present, since I'm fairly certain it will have been completely forgotten soon enough. Of course, present-day readers would find this sickeningly boring, it's been done to death so much.
I'm speaking of both L'affair Rocker, and the Presidential Campaign in the year 2000. I'm hoping to help future historians get their wires uncrossed in sorting out these two cause celebres from one another.
Last year, the Atlanta Braves promoted one of their young arms to the job of Closer, a kid named John Rocker. He had all those characteristics we of this generation have come to associate with a dominant closer: snotty, arrogant, can't-lose-attitude, clearly a few screws short of a load (so much the better to surpress his fear and inspire it in batters), a 100-MPH fastball, and equal lefty-right splits even though he throws left-handed.
The guy really was just a kid last year, 24, and showed every bit of it. Big head, big mouth, bit of country manner to him. Despite his tender years and somewhat raw state, he was a good match for the modern role of stopper.

Although Rocker has the spotlight on him right now, let us not forget that he is not the only one that needs to re-think his actions more carefully. Another example of a poor role model is Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Bobby Chouinard. He is charged with putting a loaded gun to his wife's head during an argument on Christmas.
We can also examine Dennis Rodman's numerous questionable antics, the wife beating charges against Wil Cordero and the murder charges against Rae Carruth. There is never a shortage of athletes acting like less than ideal citizens.
Rocker needs to understand that he is in the public eye. When he decided to become a baseball player, he was well aware that he would be in the spotlight and would have to act appropriately.
This does not mean he can't have his own opinion towards any race, city or sexual orientation. Instead, he should learn to keep these feelings to himself. Professional athletes need to realize that they are admired by millions of people around the world. Many fans are impressionable young children and a player like Rocker expressing hatred for minorities is not setting a good example.

"White racism exists," "National Review" editor John O'Sullivan once said, "But its social power is weak. And the social power against it, overwhelming." Too bad white Atlanta Braves relief pitcher John Rocker did not consult with O'Sullivan before Rocker shot his mouth off. In a recent issue of "Sports Illustrated," John Rocker treats us to a view of his Archie Bunker-esque thinking. An important member of the Braves team that beat the New York Mets in the playoffs, Rocker offered his thoughts on the Big Apple, "Imagine having to take the [Number] 7 train to the ballpark, looking like you're [riding through] Beirut next to some kid with purple hair next to some queer with AIDS right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids." About New York, Rocker said, "The biggest thing I don't like about New York are the foreigners. I'm not a very big fan of foreigners. You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. Asians and Koreans and Vietnamese and Indians and Russians and Spanish people and everything up there. How the hell did they get in this country?" He called a black teammate a "fat monkey," and criticized the way Japanese women drive.
