Jackie Robinson Breaks the Color Barrier
As with many aspects of life in late-19th century America, baseball was segregated. There were separate teams for black players because they were not allowed to play on white professional teams. In the late 1800s, professional African American players played on all-black teams such as the Cuban Giants. But some baseball managers and owners of Major League teams wanted to hire African Americans. In order to get around the rules, they listed some black players as Hispanic or Native American. Baseball remained a segregated sport well into the 1940s. In 1945, a talented young player named Jackie Robinson joined the Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro American League. He would become baseball's "great experiment."

Few can know what it must have felt like for Jackie Robinson to play his first game in Major League Baseball. Thanks to Robinson, countless other players to follow him didn't have to find out. Throughout history, baseball has been in a number of positions to affect social change in dramatic ways. In 1947, baseball began something it would take years for the rest of the nation to catch up to integration. Jackie Robinson was born in 1919 in the rural South. Less than six months after Jackie's arrival, his father left the family never to return. Robinson's mother packed up her five children and moved to California in 1920. Robinson attended Pasadena Junior College where his athletic skills were showcased. He gained entrance into UCLA and became the first athlete to ever letter in four sports baseball, basketball, track and football. He also developed a reputation as unwilling to allow anyone to insult him or his race.

On April 15, 1947, the Brooklyn Dodgers opened their season against the Boston Braves at Ebbets Field. Starting at first base was a 28-year old African American by the name of Jack Roosevelt Robinson. With the game's first pitch, Jackie Robinson became the first black man to play in the modern major leagues, breaking the color barrier that had surrounded baseball for over a half century and symbolizing the racial integration of American society. Robinson's character, courage and talent have secured his place in history. Less known are Larry Doby, Henry Thompson, Willard Brown and Dan Bankhead, the four other African American men who played in the major leagues in 1947. Like Jackie Robinson, these men used their talent and determination to overcome decades of racial discrimination in the sport that has stood as "America's pastime." The Amateur Athletic Foundation honors the five men who first crossed the color barrier of major league baseball. J ackie R obinson is a legendary figure and his name is now synonymous with the desegregation and redefinition of professional sports. Yet, our collective knowledge of the historical process that created this American icon, has been reduced to an occasional "color commentary." Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey are forever linked in American history. Rickey understood the psyche of white America. While Rickey's motives are still unclear, history has proven that his "great experiment" to integrate baseball, ultimately had less to do with baseball and more to do with challenging deep seated attitudes about race. The process had to be systematic, and Jackie Robinson not only had to have all the required physical and emotional assets, he had to be willing to make the necessary sacrifices.
Sam Lacy
, The AFRO-American's sports editor from 1944 through the present, confirms that while Jackie Robinson was not the most talented black player in the Negro Leagues , he was the best choice for integrating the Major Leagues . http://www.ocfs.state.ny.us/main/jackie_robinson/about.htm
Jackie Robinson, born as Jack Roosevelt Robinson, was born in Cairo, Georgia in 1919 to a family of sharecroppers. His mother, Mallie Robinson, single-handedly raised Jackie and her four other children. They were the only black family on their block, and the prejudice they encountered only strengthened their bonds. From this humble beginning would grow the first baseball player to break Major League Baseball's color barrier that segregated major league baseball for more than 50 years. Growing up in a large, single-parent family, Robinson excelled early at all sports and learned to make his own way in life. At UCLA, Robinson became the first athlete to win varsity letters in four sports: baseball, basketball, football, and track. In 1941, he was named to the All-American football team. After his college education was left incomplete due to financial pressures, Robinson enlisted into the U.S. Army. After two years in the army, he had progressed to second lieutenant. His army career was cut short due to a court-martial sparked by Robinson's objections to racial discrimination. In the end, Jackie left the U.S. Army with an honorable discharge. In 1945, there were few career opportunities open to a black man, even to those who had attended college. Jackie played one season in the Negro Baseball League, traveling all over the Midwest with the Kansas City Monarchs. In 1947, when Jackie Robinson first donned a Brooklyn Dodger uniform, he pioneered the integration of professional athletics in America. By breaking the color barrier in baseball, the nation's preeminent sport, he courageously challenged the deeply rooted custom of racial segregation in both the North and the South.

Jackie Robinson Ballpark History
In 1946, Jackie Robinson came to town for spring training with the Montreal Royals, the Brooklyn Dodgers Triple-A farm club. He was banned from playing in Jacksonville and Sanford, but not in Daytona. He debuted here on March 17, 1946. His first plate appearance came in an exhibition game against their parent club, the Brooklyn Dodgers. Robinson then became the first African-American player in the Major Leagues. In the winter of 1951, the ballpark experienced a major facelift with most emphasis being placed on the field, fence, press box and clubhouse. However, in 1960, hurricane Donna blew across the state and did $75,000 worth of damage to the park. Some people suggested tearing down the park, but the city commission voted to restore it. In 1962, present-day grandstands and the current press box were installed, due to a pair of fans that fell through the wooden bleacher area during the singing of the seventh-inning stretch at a game.

America Honors a Hero: Jackie Robinson When the 1997 baseball season opened on April 1, many special events were held to honor Jackie Robinson. Both major and minor league players and major league umpires wore "Breaking Barriers" arm patches in his honor. They wore the patches all season long. Many Little League, high school, and college teams wore the patches this season, too. This is just one way people are honoring the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's first year in major league baseball. Jackie Robinson was and still is a true American hero. Without Jackie Robinson's courage, African-American athletes might still not play with white athletes. Imagine there would be no Michael Jordan in basketball, no Tiger Woods in golf, no Deion Sanders in both baseball and football. Although Jackie Robinson died in 1972, when he was just 53 years old, the things he did in his life helped all Americans. Every athlete and every sports fan today benefits from Jackie Robinson's "breaking the barrier." Jack Roosevelt Robinson grew up in Pasadena, California, in the 1930s. At that time, the youth club in his neighborhood allowed him to play there only one day a week because of the color of his skin. Nevertheless, Jackie Robinson practiced his sports whenever and wherever he could. By the time he was in high school he was playing on the basketball, baseball, football, and track teams. He did the same when he attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Hastings 4th Graders Learn About Jackie Robinson and Negro League Baseball
To celebrate the life of Jackie Robinson and the forgotten players of the Negro Baseball Leagues, the fourth graders in Mr. Banaszewski's and Mrs. Penney's class created a digital story using the iMovie program on the computer. After researching books, videos, web sites and reading the book Jackie and Me by Dan Gutman students wrote reports on Satchel Paige, Cool Papa Bell, Josh Gibson, and wrote letters to video companies encouraging them to include more Negro Baseball League players in their video games (see below). Currently, there is only one video game that includes players like Robinson and Paige. Students also wrote to Dan Gutman to tell him what they liked about his book and who they hoped he would write about next. As a class, students wrote a script for an iMovie to share what they learned about the life of Jackie Robinson and the Negro Baseball League. We discussed what worked best for images, video clips, audio, and most importantly what was said in the story. All of the students contributed either script, art work, editing suggestions or assisted in presenting the finished project. Here are some of the students' letters to video game companies and some of the responses they have received: Click on the play buttons below to view these student-made movies about Jackie Robinson and Negro League Baseball.
