3:18 P.M. EST THE PRESIDENT: Members of Congress. Mrs. Robinson, and Sharon and Dave, Laura and I are honored to be with you all as we honor your husband and your dad. Reverend Jackson. You know, I figure I'm the ninth speaker (laughter.) I spent a little time in baseball. Commissioner, it's good to see you and appreciate the McCourts being here of the great Los Angeles Dodgers family. But a lot of times, the ninth hitter was told by the manager, keep your swing short. (Laughter.) I kind of guess that's what Nancy Pelosi meant when I got up she said, you are the ninth speaker. (Laughter.) How about keeping it short? I'm honored to be here for the to present the Congressional Gold Medal to Mrs. Robinson. It's a great tradition of our Congress to honor fantastic and noble Americans, and we're doing just the thing with Jack Roosevelt Robinson.

Career Hitting Record Other Resources Deserted by his father when he was less than a year old, Robinson's mother moved to Pasadena, CA, where she worked as a maid. Robinson grew up in a poor neighborhood where many boys were likely to become juvenile delinquents and then criminals. But a man named Carl Anderson established organized sports in the neighborhood; Robinson and many other boys had their attention and energy diverted into a new field. Robinson went to Pasadena Junior College and then won a scholarship to UCLA, where he lettered in baseball, basketball, football, and track. He left school in 1941, shortly before he would have received his degree, to work for the National Youth Administration as an assistant athletic director. Drafted into the Army during World War II, Robinson became a lieutenant and was discharged late in 1944, when he became basketball coach at Samuel Houston College in Texas. Then he joined the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League in 1945. Branch Rickey, president of the Brooklyn Dodgers, was looking for a black player to integrate major-league baseball, and Robinson was one of his prospects. They had a long meeting on August 28, 1945, at which Rickey warned Robinson that he would be subjected to vicious racial epithets and probably some foul play on the field, and that he would have to hold himself back from retaliating.

Jackie Robinson *Jackie Robinson was born on this date in 1919. He was an African-American athlete, business executive, and civil rights leader.
Born to a family of sharecroppers in Cairo, Georgia, Jack Roosevelt Robinson attended Pasadena Junior College and UCLA. In 1941 Robinson left college to join the United States Army and he received an honorable discharge in 1944 with the rank of first lieutenant. The following year, Robinson began his professional baseball career with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues.
That same year, Robinson signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers. After one season, he was called up to Brooklyn, starting at first base on April 15, 1947. Breaking baseball's color barrier was a serious challenge, and Robinson met fierce racial resistance from many players on opposing teams and the Dodgers, and from fans. Some rival players threw pitches at his head, spat on him when he slid into a base and more. With the support of Brooklyn owner Branch Rickey and the encouragement of some teammates, the determined Robinson survived these attacks and helped the Dodgers win the National League pennant.
That season he was named rookie of the year. Robinson's exciting style of play included graceful fielding, timely hitting, and aggressive base running. He retired from pro baseball after the 1956 season with a career batting average of.311 and he was inducted to Hall of Fame in 1962, the first Black players to receive that honor. After baseball, Robinson became vice president of a restaurant chain in New York City.

Listen to Jackie Robinson

Welcome to PEOPLE IN AMERICA, a program in Special English on the Voice of America. Today Shirley Griffith and Rich Kleinfeldt tell about a man who changed professional baseball in the United States. Jackie Roosevelt Robinson was the first black man to play in modern major league baseball. (MUSIC) VOICE ONE: After World War Two, many Americans still believed that people of different races should not mix. In some parts of the country, blacks and whites lived in separate areas and went to separate schools. Blacks who tried to change the system risked being beaten or killed.

Jackie Robinson: Before Organized Baseball Pasadena, California, 121 Pepper Street, was the urban environment. Mollie Robinson and her five children constituted the familial environment. These made up the environments that helped spawn Jack Roosevelt Robinson, the youngest of five children, four boys and a girl, whom Mollie Robinson saved from object poverty in Cairo, Georgia after her husband Jerry disappeared. Mollie's pride and determination caused her to seek a better life for her children. Jim Sasser, owner of the plantation on which the Robinsons lived and worked, had accused Mollie of causing Jerry to disappear. An uncle in Pasadena had invited Mollie and her five children to abandon Cairo and live with him. In 1920 Mollie decided to take Edgar, Frank, Mack, Jack and Willa Mae to Pasadena to live with their uncle Burton. The early years were a struggle for Mollie as the house owned by Uncle Burton was not large enough for the growing Robinson family. It remains a mystery how she was able to purchase a four-bedroom cottage at 121 Pepper Street without a husband and on a domestic's salary!

COMPETITION V. DISCRIMINATION
How Jackie Robinson Desegregated America
Perhaps the least-learned lesson of the saga of Jackie Robinson is that competition can transform self-interest into an engine for racial fairness.
by STEVE SAILER [This was the cover story of the April 8, 1996 issue of National Review www.iSteve.com Email Steve FIFTY years ago, on April 18, 1946, Jackie Robinson broke organized baseball's color barrier with a characteristic bang, homering and scoring four runs in his historic first game for the Brooklyn Dodgers' top farm team. This anniversary will no doubt unleash a wave of media meditations, since it combines the two national pastimes of the American male intellectual: denouncing racism and waxing nostalgic over the Brooklyn Dodgers. Spike Lee is preparing The Jackie Robinson Saga , and I'm sure Stephen Jay Gould will favor us with his thoughts. Yet, beyond the obvious platitudes, baseball's long struggle over race can yield some surprising perspectives on our national predicament. The Robinson epic is generally lumped in with the 1954 Brown decision against segregated public schools and the 1964 Civil Rights Act outlawing job discrimination. Yet two crucial differences stand out. 1) The integration of organized baseball preceded the civil-rights revolution, and in reality baseball helped make later reforms politically feasible by giving white Americans black heroes with whom to identify. 2) Government had almost nothing to do with this triumph of the competitive market. Baseball owners finally realized that the more they cared about the color of people's money, the less they could afford to care about the color of their skin.
