  • The Baseball Column: Sammy Is No Frank
    Robinson Vs. Sosa
By David Zingler POSTED: 7:44 am CDT August 2, 2005 UPDATED: 2:34 pm CDT August 2, 2005 Rant One: Putting Sammy In His Place
Remember the 1988 vice presidential debate, when grizzled Texas Sen. Lloyd Bentsen told a fresh-faced Dan Quayle, "You're no Jack Kennedy?" That lone highlight of the Michael Dukakis campaign came rushing back into my memory when I heard that the suddenly-slim Sammy Sosa had tied the legendary Frank Robinson on the all- time hom run list. Robinson, probably the most underrated player in baseball history, won an MVP in both leagues, a World Series MVP, a Triple Crown and was just a hair shy of being the third member of the 600 home run (586) and 3,000 hit (2,943) club. Sammy's recent gaudy offensive totals meanwhile are as artificially inflated as his biceps were prior to 2005. Sammy, you're no Frank Robinson! Rant Two: The Swingin' A's
If you’re sick of the Red Sox patting themselves on the back, tired of the Braves choking, bored with the efficient Cardinals and nauseated by the Yankees, the Oakland A's may be your team. Led by no-names like Bobby Kielty, Mark Kotsay and Nick Swisher, the Athletics have overcome a slow start and jumped to the top of the Wild Card scramble once again. With Barry Zito and Rich Harden just hitting their stride, the Moneyball Men could be the team to beat in that race.

I agree with your comments about the Expos not recovering from the strike. In fact most of the Expo players remained on strike till last week. This is a "lo-fi" version of our main content. The 2005 World Series
Frank Robinson When you cut through all the superlatives, two capture the essence and intensity of the man. Frank Robinson, the self-made star with skinny legs and a big stick, was fearless and inspirational qualities that earned him the contempt of opponents and the respect and admiration of teammates and fans. There was nothing flashy about the right fielder who made his first memorable impressions in 1956 as a 20-year-old rookie for Cincinnati. Competing for prestige in a baseball era that would be dominated by such names as Mays, Mantle, Aaron and Clemente, Robinson played with a recklessness, intimidating self-confidence and scowling demeanor that infuriated opponents. He always slid hard, he never fraternized with the enemy and he wielded a booming bat that would produce 586 career home runs. Even his batting style was confrontational. Robinson crowded the plate like a boxer trying to work inside, defiantly daring the pitcher to throw a strike. He crouched and leaned forward, bat pointed upward, and glared toward the mound over an upraised shoulder. Pitchers who greeted his insolence with fastballs to the ribs usually paid a stiff price in subsequent at-bats.

    Limping Home/Hitting the Road
Posted by Andrew Torres What a staggeringly abysmal three days. The Angels getting swept by the Seattle Mariners, the final two games in the last at bat, is torture enough. Then to witness the Dodgers blowing a 5-0 lead to the Colorado Rockies on their way to a 8-7 loss that drops them six games behind the San Diego Padres in the They Shoot Horses Don't They division. I live for this? But other than the St. Louis Cardinals, who are a week away from setting up their playoff rotation and giving their regulars as much rest as they want while not letting the rust set in, the other seven playoff spots are still up for grabs. The next ten games on the schedule for all of the contending teams could clarify a lot of things before the final week of the season arrives. Today, I'll focus on the American League. Sunday, March 16, 2003 Robinson: Minorities have a long way to go
    By PETER KERASOTIS
    Florida Today VIERA, Fla.
    - The walls are bare except for a conspicuous framed poster that hangs not far from Frank Robinson's gaze. "That's not there by accident," Robinson said softly, looking up at it. The poster shows Jackie Robinson, resplendent in his Montreal Royals uniform. The Royals were a minor league team in the Brooklyn Dodgers' organization in 1946, when the photo was taken. Montreal is really where the color barrier first fell, and the significance of that is not lost on Frank Robinson, who now manages the Montreal Expos. The two men share the same surname. They also share a significant page in American history. Jackie Robinson was baseball's first black player. Frank Robinson was baseball's first black manager. For Jackie Robinson, the journey began in Montreal. And now, for Frank Robinson, the journey ends in the same place. "I'm very aware of the significance," Frank Robinson said. "It's a special coincidence, kind of weird, but in a special way. I'm managing in the city where he broke in. My last stop as a manager is where he started as a player. Yeah, I do think about it."

    TVSpy Message Board: TVSpy Watercooler
Topic Name: ESPN Baseball Tonight Message Name: Frank Robinson Is Right... Date Posted: In Reply To: Because he is so close to those in the front office and higher, Peter Gammons, I think, coats his reporting with a lot of what executives want. Very little of what he delivers is for those who really might have an interest in the nuts and bolts of every day happenings. Players, I can't imagine, really find a reason to get close with him. Cosmetically, for all the money he's made off his newspaper gig and his ESPN job, he should fix his teeth. They distract and look horrible. Orthodontics have come a long way....go find out about it, Peter. And, find someone who can teach you how to tie a tie. The knot should not be the size of a boxing glove. Message: The Washington Nationals are shorted on the highlights on "Baseball Tonight!" Come on ESPN. these are not the Montreal Expos. The Nats are a good competitive baseball team that plays the game like they are pennant contenders. I like Karl Ravesch (that is his ESPN niche) and all the baseball experts are entertaining. The mini-baseball clinics are a treat for those of us who never played baseball. ESPN cannot justify paying 4 anchors nightly without giving them as much face time as possible. Unfortunately, it is at the expense of extended highlights. But we still have those instant updates. WAR "BARTENDER...A SHOT OF JAAAAAAAAACK!"

Panama's 100-Year Celebration: Frank Robinson And San Felipe ~ by Matthew Atlee Return To Issue Article Index Panama's 100-Year Celebration
Frank Robinson And San Felipe ~ by Matthew Atlee Of all the places to see in San Felipe, the most important are Bolivar Square, the church of the Golden Altar and the Panama Canal Museum. Make sure you go to the church of the Golden Altar: when the pirate Morgan invaded the city in 1671, one of the secrets of Panama City was the golden altar that sat in the main church in “old Panama”. In order to protect the altar from Morgan the locals covered it in tar as Morgan invaded from the hills behind Panama City. He never found the altar. And when he left two-weeks after invading, the altar was transported to San Felipe, which at that time was the “new Panama”. The golden altar represents the deep past. The Hotel Foyo represents the recent past. Located on a back street that is so serene and peaceful and which runs right behind the Panama Canal Museum, the Hotel Foyo was one of the more infamous “dive hotels” in Panama City during the mid-20th century. Panama City has great “dive hotels” and if you like that idea, be sure to check into one. Now, in Spanish the verb Foyar means to fuck. So the Hotel Foyo was the “fuck hotel”. Everyone laughed when they heard that it had been restored and made into a monument. I like the idea of these kinds of monuments. The hotel is pretty on the outside. The inside hasn’t been restored but if you look through the windows of the hotel you can see the old courtyard and rooms in the back.
