The Sporting News Earl Weaver Joe Altobelli Cal Ripken Sr.
Frank Robinson Johnny Oates Phil Regan FRANK ROBINSON Years during Ripken's streak: Games: 515 games (24.2 percent). He's been very fortunate to not have what I would call any serious injuries. The only one I can remember and I can't remember exactly what year it was (actually 1985) is the ankle. He stepped on second base and turned his ankle severely. And I thought there was no way he could play, because his ankle appeared to just totally turn over. But we had a day off the next day, and he came out and got treatment that whole entire day. The next day, when he came to the park, he didn't even have a limp. Not a limp. No question about it. No concerns. He went out and continued to play as if nothing had happened. And I just said, "Holy smokes, that guy is something different." Cal is a very special person. He keeps his little injuries to himself. He makes the trainer swear he will not tell the manager when he's got a little nick here or a little nick there. He gets his treatment at the times when nobody is around. Even if he has to wait until 2 o'clock in the morning after a ballgame, he'll get his treatment then and that's it.

Statistics are like a girl in a fine bikini.
They show a lot but not everything Toby Harrah As a player without five tools myself, I always have appreciated the Hit By Pitch (HBP) as a way to get on base. When I was a kid, I needed all the walks and HBPs I could get because for the longest time, I was a dead-pull hitter without a lot of power. Opponents would recognize pretty quickly that everything I connected with landed in about the same place, so any way I could get on that didn't require my soft liner to elude a fielder was a net credit to my middling efforts. BTW: I still let myself get hit in slow-pitch softball...it doesn't hurt and the lousy umps who normally call everything that doesn't bounce before it reaches home plate a strike have a really hard time calling a pitch that hits a batter in the box a strike, whereas they have no qualms about calling it a strike if you jump out of the way. I usually was near the top of the league in HBP, though no one else, I think, wanted to be. The first major leaguer I ever saw who played it roughly my way was
