Setting the standard by which all who followed him are judged, Robinson played third base with style, class, and an uncanny ability to turn in spectacular plays with startling regularity for 23 seasons. In 16 of those seasons, he was the Gold Glove award winner. For 15 straight seasons, he was the American League 's starting All-Star third baseman. He led AL third basemen in assists 8 times and in fielding 11 times. He holds almost every lifetime record for third baseman by a wide margin: most games (2,870), best fielding percentage (.971), most putouts (2,697), most assists (6,205), most chances (9,165), and most double plays (618). After he almost singlehandedly won the 1970 World Series for the Orioles, Reds manager

Career Hitting Record Other Resources Robinson joined the NL's Cincinnati Reds in 1956, hit 38 home runs and led the league in runs scored with 122, and was named the league's rookie of the year. He led the NL in slugging with a .595 percentage in 1960 and with a .611 percentage in 1961, when he batted .323 with 37 home runs and 124 RBI to win the most valuable player award. However, he hit only .200 in Cincinnati's five-game loss to the New York Yankees in the World Series. Robinson had an even better year in 1962, batting .342 with 39 home runs and 136 RBI and leading the league with a .624 slugging percentage, 134 runs scored, and 51 doubles. His production dropped somewhat, in part because of injuries, during the next three seasons and an arrest for carrying a concealed weapon got him in trouble with Cincinnati management. The Reds traded him to the Baltimore Orioles in 1966 and he responded with the best season of his career. Robinson won the triple crown with a .316 average, 49 home runs, and 122 RBI, also leading the AL with 122 runs scored and a .637 slugging percentage. Robinson was named most valuable player for that performance, becoming the only man ever to win the MVP award in both leagues. He was also named male athlete of the year by the Associated Press.

UNITED STATES OF BASEBALL
BY PETER HANDRINOS

At first glance, he isn’t too promising a candidate to be a beloved baseball icon. After all, Frank Robinson’s bad personal qualities are well-known. And, well, bad. For one thing, Frank Robinson the baseball player was about as mean as anyone this side of Ty Cobb. Few players saw careers with more taunts exchanged, plates crowded, beanballs hurled, or hard slides slid. No one keeps precise statistics on surly reputations, but any history of the game will recall Robinson as among the most combative and feared fighters of the 1950’s and 1960’s. Don Zimmer, who’s been around Major League Baseball for more than 50 years, once called Robbie “the fiercest competitor you could ever find” on a diamond. Once Robinson moved on from his rough-and-tumble playing days in the mid-1970’s, unfortunately, he hit some more rough patches as a manager. It’s tempting to say his record has been ‘up and down’, only there hasn’t been much ‘up’. In reality, Frank Robinson’s managerial record has been mostly been ‘down and down’.

Baseball Fever General Baseball Hall of Fame Talk PDA View Full Version : 5 Tier HOF (v.2) - The Ultimate J W 07-08-2003, 11:27 AM When I first joined Baseball Fever (aka Baseball Almanac) a few of the older members got together to put divide markers on the field of 189 Major League players in the Hall of Fame (Ozzie Smith had just been elected). They started with the top 40, and voted on their Tiers 40 at a time until they had 29 left at the bottom.
Now that we will be adding Eddie Murray and Gary Carter, I figure it's time to revise the list with the throngs of new posters here.
I also declined making lists last time as I felt I wasn't knowledgeable enough to have an opinion. I'm looking forward to doing it now ;) .
Tier 1 - "The Ultimate"
These are the absolute top MLB players of all time. Record setters, championship leaders, ancient legends and icons fading to glory... they define the history of the sport.
I'm going to list the players on the top 2 Tiers from before, plus Murray and Carter (Total: 82). Please make a full list of 40 players you consider the greatest or most Hall worthy.

Baseball Fever National League Washington Nationals PDA View Full Version : Frank Robinson Bob Hannah 01-01-2005, 05:51 AM The Washington Times (www.washingtontimes.com/sports/20041231-115841-6259r.htm) article outlines his hiring by Baseball in 2002 for what was thought to be a one year stint and discusses the changes Robinson had to make within himself concerning his management style. Frank says he would like to stay with the team in some capacity when new ownership takes over.
F. Robby never seemed too popular with Montreal fans on this board or others I've perused. That's understandable considering he was an employee of MLB prior to taking over management duties in that city. He's a company man that supports front office policy publicly. His onfield decisions were constantly criticized in forums, but recall Frank works out of the dugout and the critics sit at PC monitors.
I've always liked him, as a player and manager. As the article notes, he has made changes in management style- a no nonsense guy who has learned to bend somewhat in consideration of his players. Here is to a successful season for manager Robinson and his charges. 01-01-2005, 12:14 PM

Robinson 'Ready for the Long Run' as Nationals' Manager
By Barry Svrluga Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, February 15, 2005; Page A01 VIERA, Fla., Feb. 14 The most recognizable name on the Washington Nationals' roster hit his last home run, No. 586, some 29 years ago. In February 2002, he took a job that was supposed to last one season, after which he would have been more than happy to head back to his position in the offices of Major League Baseball. Yet Monday morning, Frank Robinson emerged from the clubhouse door, walked through the dugout and onto the playing field at Space Coast Stadium. In August, he will turn 70. He could retire and concentrate on getting his golf handicap in single digits. But not now. Not with baseball returning to Washington for the first time since 1971, when Robinson visited RFK Stadium as a Baltimore Oriole. With pitchers and catchers set to report to spring training here Tuesday, with the first workout scheduled for Thursday, he intends to manage this team now and in the future.
Frank Robinson's name is the most famous on the Washington Nationals roster: He ranks fifth in baseball history in home runs.
