Career Hitting Record Other Resources Known as "Hoover" or the "Human Vacuum Cleaner" because of his astounding defensive abilities at third base, Robinson could also drive in runs when they were needed. He was with the AL's Baltimore Orioles briefly in 1955 and 1956, became a part-time player in 1957, and alternated between second base and third base in 1958. Robinson missed much of the 1959 season with a knee injury and finally settled in as a full-time starter at third base in 1960, when he hit .294. That was the first of fifteen consecutive years in which he appeared in an All-Star game and the first of eleven seasons in which Robinson led the league's third basemen in fielding percentage. Robinson had his finest offensive season in 1964, when he was named the AL's most valuable player. He batted .317 that year with 28 home runs and a league-leading 118 RBI. It was in the 1970 World Series, though, that Robinson really became a legend. He robbed Cincinnati of at least four hits and five runs, hit a game-winning home run, and batted .429 with 6 RBI and 4 runs scored, as Baltimore beat the Reds in five games. In 1976, Robinson became a part-time player, batting only .211 in 71 games. He retired after the 1977 season with 16 Gold Glove Awards, a record for non-pitchers. He also holds major league records for third basemen in assists, putouts, total chances accepted, double plays, and fielding percentage.

BROOKS ROBINSON
It was his amazing, acrobatic fielding in the 1970 World Series that made him a superstar, but Brooks Robinson was a Baltimore institution for over two decades. The 16-time Gold Glover winner played in 2,896 games, and his 267 home runs were, at the time of his retirement, the most by any American League third baseman. He was one of the most popular players of his generation, and thousands of fans in Baltimore named their children after him.

BROOKS ROBINSON Baseball Hall-of-Famer Brooks Calbert Robinson, Jr. wasn't nicknamed "Hoover" for his resemblance to Hebert or J. Edgar but rather for his ability to suck up everything hit towards third base. He won Gold Gloves every year from 1960 to 1975, led AL third basemen eleven times in fielding and eight times each in putouts and assists, and made more putouts, assists, chances, and double plays than any third baseman in history. He also spent a record twenty-three years with one team, the Orioles. Sportswriter Gordon Beard said, "He never asked anyone to name a candy bar after him. In Baltimore people name their children after him." Robinson made his debut as an Oriole in 1955 and collected 2,848 hits in the regular season; however, no amount of work could make up for his basic lack of speed; he grounded into more double plays than any other ALer (297) and stole only 28 bases in his entire career. He won the MVP award in 1964, hitting .317 with 28 homers and shone in postseason play. In 39 playoff and World Series games, he hit 5 homers and went 44-for-145, a .303 average. He hit an even .500 in the 1969 playoffs and .583 in 1970 as the O's crushed the Twins.

American League MVP 1964
18 consecutive All Star Games during 23 seasons with Orioles.
Brooks Robinson has been called the greatest third baseman in Major League Baseball history. Brooks brought a flair and skill to his position unlike the sport had ever seen. From the first time Brooks stepped onto the field with the Baltimore Orioles in 1955 to his retirement in 1977, he dominated the left side of the infield.
His election to the Baseball Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 1983 culminated a career that is still talked about today. His accomplishments are legendary:
American League MVP 1964
World Series MVP 1970
16 Consecutive Gold Gloves 1960-1975
18 Consecutive All-Star Games 1960-1974 All-Star Game MVP 1966 Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame 1977 In the 1970 World Series, Brooks was the recipient of the MVP award. His defense was flawless and he tied the record for most hits in a five-game series with nine. In all, Brooks played in five championships and four World Series. Today, Brooks continues to remain active in the game. He has served as the president of the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association since 1987; director of the Association of Professional Baseball Players of America since 1990; and director of the National Baseball Hall of Fame since 1995.

His play at third base was the defining characteristic, they say. "The Orioles were built on having great defense, and Brooks was the cornerstone," said Ron Hansen, who played shortstop alongside Robinson in the early 1960s.
