I specifically mentioned Ted Simmons Wally Schang , and Joe Torre as among a group of catchers who deserve a second look. There are a few third basemen, most notably Ron Santo
In the meantime, I would like to review the candidacy of a Hall of Fame-worthy player who is on the ballot for the seventh time. With that in mind, ladies and gentlemen of the selection jury, I hereby introduce Exhibit One in The Case For Bert Blyleven

It’s difficult to make a Hall of Fame case for Marvin Miller. It’s just that his impact on baseball has been so great that it’s hard to appreciate the difference between the hidebound old world he entered and the thriving modern game he left behind. To understand how Miller changed the National Pastime, try to picture the game as it existed in the mid-1960s. Team ‘owners’ really lived up to the name- they had absolute control over their employees due to a standard reserve clause in all player contracts. The clause meant that salary negotiations were strictly my-way-or-the highway affairs where management whims determined how much players earned. Absolutely. Forever. Anyone who didn’t like it could go out and get a day job. It was an ‘old fashioned’ system, to be sure, if your definition of ‘old fashioned’ goes back to the Dark Ages. Still, the players couldn’t do anything about it because their so-called representatives weren’t watchdogs, but tame little puppies. Whenever players had the nerve to speak up about the unfairness in the lowball offers, much less management sleaze like retaliatory trades or blacklists, the players’ leadership didn’t make a peep. The owners’ club liked their pet player reps so much that it even offered to finance them.

Back to "Sports and the Nation" introduction Robin Roberts (born 1926) In 1974, novelist James Michener took it upon himself to call attention in the New York Times to a grave baseball injustice: Robin Roberts-for many years the Philadelphia Phillies’ best pitcher and the winner of 286 games-had not yet made it into the Hall of Fame, while others with less impressive records had. Making Roberts’s unheralded accomplishment greater yet, Michener noted, was the fact that he pitched for a persistently lackluster team, and more than a few of his victories were won with little backup from his teammates. Finally, however, justice was done in 1979, when Roberts was inducted into the Hall of Fame. When Time sent Henry Koerner to paint this likeness for a cover story in 1956, Roberts was in his ninth season at Philadelphia. Having won twenty or more games six years in a row, he was widely regarded as baseball’s best pitcher. Watching Roberts prepare to send a ball across home plate, Koerner found him a bundle of "squirms, writhes, fusses, and tugs." But just before the throw, Roberts froze, gazing "with sheer disdain" at the batter. That was the moment that Koerner sought to record in his portrait.

Memories are vivid as pitching great Robin Roberts, 77, views the exhibit "Baseball As America."
SHELTON E-mail: Click here Archive By GARY SHELTON, Times Sports Columnist Published December 12, 2003 On the inside of the frame, Robin Roberts is eternal. Roberts stares ahead, his eyes narrowed, his jaw set, the way it has been for almost a half-century now. There is an element of cockiness to the image, that of a young man who believes so firmly in his youth and his ability that he believes it will last forever. Inside the frame, it will. On the outside of the frame, where mortals get older, the man with the gray in his hair leans forward and squints.

Bangarang Steven Spielberg's Hook has arrived on Superbit DVD with little fanfare. It was one of the first Spielberg movies on DVD back when few of his certifiable classics were yet available, and now it re-appears in Sony's Superbit format, with enhanced picture and sound. The packaging remains devoid of extra features, in line with the perception of Hook as also-ran Spielberg at best, a would-be blockbuster that no one likes at worst. It's true that Hook displays a less sophisticated, less wizardly Spielberg. Absent is the virtuoso command of Schindler's List Jurassic Park Saving Private Ryan A.I. Minority Report (2002), or, for that matter, Catch Me If You Can (2002). But Hook fits comfortably in another mode of Spielberg's work, including some of the above-mentioned films: it's underrated. Baseball Fever General Baseball PDA View Full Version : Robin Roberts autobiography Chancellor 09-15-2003, 04:28 PM Robin Roberts released an autobiography entitled My Life in Baseball this summer. Anyone read it yet? DanW 11-07-2003, 05:38 AM I read it and thought it was pretty good. It was written with the same collaborator Roberts used for his book about the 1950 Whiz Kids. It covered his baseball years very well, including his post-Phillies career and his involvement with the labor movement. I wish it would have included more about his life after baseball, but then again, that might have gotten boring. But overall, I thought it was pretty good, although not a classic.

By James G. Robinson
"Whenever I threw a home-run ball, and Lord knows I threw plenty of them, I usually knew as soon as I saw that full swing what I had done wrong ... That's why I was never upset by a home run, because I knew immediately what had happened and was able to correct it." Robin Roberts
In this era of inflated home run totals, it may comfort pitchers around the majors that the most homered-upon pitcher in baseball history is enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Robin Roberts, who was inducted into the Hall in 1976, gave up the 505th and last home run of his illustrious career to the Pirates' Willie Stargell 39 years ago today.
Few pitchers have enjoyed the success Roberts did in his 19 years on the mound, but none have seen as many of their pitches land behind the outfield wall. But to be sure, not many pitchers took the mound as often as the ace of Philadelphia's "Whiz Kids".
Roberts led the league in innings pitched and starts each season from 1951 through 1955. And although he gave up over 20 homers in each of those seasons (leading the league with 35 and a then-record 41 allowed in '54 and '55, respectively) he never won fewer than twenty games during that glorious half-decade and led the league in victories four times.
