Induction Speeches
Kirby Puckett
Transcript of Kirby Puckett's speech, August 5, 2001: Bud Selig: Kirby Puckett. Minnesota Twins, American League, 1984 to 1995. A proven team leader with an ever present smile, an infectious exuberance. Who led the Minnesota Twins to World Series Championships in 1987 and 1991. Over 12 seasons he hit for power and average, batting .318 with 414 doubles, 207 home runs. Also a prolific run producer. Scored 1,071 runs, drove in 1,085 runs in 1783 games. A six time Gold Glove winner who patrolled center field with elegance and style. Routinely scaling outfield walls to take away home runs. The ten time All-Star career ended prematurely because of an unfortunate eye problem. Welcome to Cooperstown, Kirby. Kirby Puckett: Before I get to a few words I have prepared, I would like to thank Commissioner Selig, the organizers here at the Hall of Fame, and all of these great players for being here with me today. Particularly my fellow inductees, Dave Winfield, Mr. Mazeroski, himself, and to the family of Hilton Smith. I am overwhelmed by the number of great fans who traveled all of the way from Minnesota or wherever you came from. You are the best. I also see some of my former teammates out there. It's awesome that you guys took the time to be with me today. When I asked my family for advice about my talk today, they were quick to tell me to keep it short. So I will. The only problem I have with that request is the time I need to thank all of the people who have helped me get here today. Because you don't get where I am today without help from a lot of people.

Career Hitting Record Other Resources In his twelve major-league seasons, Puckett batted over .300 eight times, won a batting title, and led the AL in hits four times. In his first ten seasons, he collected 2,040 hits, more than any other player in the 20th century. The solidly-built, 5-foot-8, 210-pounder became the Minnesota Twins' starting center fielder during the 1984 season and got 4 hits in his first game. He hit .296 that season and .288 the following year. He hit his first major-league home run on April 22, 1985, and had just three more homers that season. During spring training of 1986, Minnesota hitting coach Tony Oliva worked with Puckett to increase his power without hurting his average. It worked pretty well. Puckett hit .328 with 31 home runs that season. He was the first player in history to have a season with home runs in 500 or more at-bats and another with more than 30 homers. In 1987, Puckett hit .332 with 207 hits and 28 home runs and he batted .357 in the Twins' seven-game World Series victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. He followed that with his best overall season, hitting .356 with a league-leading 234 hits, 24 home runs, and 121 RBI.

From Sports Illustrated
Chuck Solomon The Rise and Fall of Kirby Puckett By Frank Deford
Issue Date: March 17, 2003 [Puckett] woke up one bright spring morning in 1996 and thought he'd slept funny on one eye, only it was glaucoma, and so never again could the Puck stand in against horsehides flung 90 to 95 mph. Just like that, no warning, he had to hang it up. Then he wasn't a ballplayer anymore, let alone a whale of one. Then he was just back to being fat little Kirby Puckett. Of course, this meant being able to spend more time with his mistress of many years, who nobody seems to have known existed, because Kirby was, of course, an ideal family man even though, truth be told, he wasn't even an ideal scoundrel, because he also had cheated on his mistress of many years with a passel of other sad and lonely women. And you thought the fans were duped. She was so shocked at his perfidy, the mistress of many years, that she began to seek comfort in commiseration with the wife. Anyway, the mistress of many years says that when Puckett couldn't play baseball anymore, "he started to become full of himself and very abusive." He began to perform lewd acts in public, such as going to a fancy shopping center, parking there, then opening his car door and stepping out and peeing in plain view of other people (Twins fans presumably included). ...
