Atlanta Braves may do it with "Pride" BY THOMAS MAY When you watch the Atlanta Braves regularly, you get to know the players as you hear the announcers comment about some of the players' individual traits, etc. Quite often Skip, Don, Joe and Pete will tell of some of the characteristics or habits of the players that give those of us who are Braves' fans a better insight to the players. What some may not know about Pride is that he excelled in several sports even though he has about a five-to-ten percent hearing capability. He also was successful in obtaining a degree in financing while playing the two sports. Pride was in Bullock County Monday visiting his grandparents, Lensie and Sippie Pride of the Smuteye Community. When I asked for an interview with Pride, I did not know how well it would go talking to someone who could hear very little. What I found out was that Curtis Pride is not handicapped. He heard every question which made the interview enjoyable. Most of the questions hinged around Pride's baseball career now with the Atlanta Braves. This is his first year with Atlanta coming over from the Detroit Tigers of the American League.

Since the Nashua Pride brought professional baseball back to New Hampshire in 1998, over 150 players have stepped onto the field at Historic Holman Stadium. This includes five men who have returned to the major leagues (Milt Cuyler, Joe Grahe, Felix Jose, Curtis Pride, and Mitch Meluskey), as well as two who went on to make their big league debuts after leaving town (James Lofton and Brendan Donnelly). And that total doesn't even include managers Mike Easler (1998) and Bobby Tolan (1999), who have over forty years as professional players and coaches on their combined resume. Pride conquers hearing defect
by Bill Nichols The road to the major leagues has had its share of chuckholes for Harrisburg outfielder Curtis Pride, but a hearing impairment has never been one of them. Pride has been unable to hear without a hearing aid since birth. "I don't consider it a handicap," Pride said yesterday before the game between the Canton-Akron Indians and the Senators at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadim. The Senators' Cliff Floyd hit a two-run homer and left-hander Gabe White (5-1) scattered five hits as Harrisburg defeated the Indians, 2-0. Pride, who is in his eighth year in the minor leagues, was with the New York Mets for seven seasons after being drafted out of high school in 1986. He joined the Montreal Expos this season as a six-year free agent. And he is having his finest season as a professional. Pride, 24, is batting .341. He has hit 13 home runs, has driven in 32 runs and has 21 stolen bases. Never before, in either Class A or AA, has he hit .300 or higher. "Everything is coming together this year," said Pride. "Jim Tracy (Harrisburg manager) has worked with me. I'm much more consistent in getting contact. I keep my front shoulder square and take a shorter swing. "I'm having fun and as long as I have fun every day and I don't worry about what others are saying."

Baseball Fever The Teams of Yesteryear Montreal Expos PDA View Full Version : The players Delyno 05-22-2001, 10:03 PM Here is my comments about a few players:
Orlando Cabrera (SS):
I once said on this board (or the ex-official BB, I can't remember) that Orlando Cabrera would be the surprise this year. Well, to date, he has been impressive. He would be better batting 7th or 8th, or even 2nd, but has done a good job batting first.
Curtis Pride (LF):
Milton Bradley (CF):
He reminds me Rondell White more and more. It's good to see him bat 3rd. My man would still be Vidro in that spot, but in the meantime, I'm glad to see Bradley there.
Geoff Blum (IF):
Has turned it around lately. Will do even better now that he is our regular 2nd baseman for the next 3 weeks.
Michael Barrett (C):
Has turned it around lately. He is now batting .208, with 4 doubles in his last 3 games. Finally.
Tony Armas (RHP): Our best pitcher since Pedro Martinez. When I watch games when he or Vazquez are pitching, I watch those for these two. But Armas is especially dominant. Guillermo Mota (RHP): Our next closer. More dangerous than Urbina at the moment.

Baseball Fever The Teams of Yesteryear Montreal Expos PDA View Full Version : Ottawa Lynx update Delyno 05-03-2001, 10:09 AM The Lynx have won 6 of their last 7 games, to improve to a 15-12 record, 3 games behind Buffalo (Cleveland Indians' affiliate).
LHP Terry Burrows has been released to make room for RHP Mike Johnson.
RHP Troy Mattes will miss today's scheduled start, due to right elbow soreness.
OF Curtis Pride is the best batter of the club, hitting .283; IF Jamey Carroll is hitting .409 but got only 22 AB.
OF Curtis Pride also leads the club in home runs, with 4.
C Brian Schneider leads the club with 13 RBI, but is hitting only .257 .
2B Henry Mateo succeeded 7 times out of 11 in the stolen bases department. He leads the club in that category.
Talking about stolen bases, 3B Rob Sasser is 6 for 6, while 1B/OF Talmadge Nunnari and OF Curtis Pride are 5-for-5.
OF Bergeron is still struggling out there, hitting .158 with 4 strikeouts and 4 walks in 5 games. He is 3 for 4 on the basepaths though.
RHP Felipe Lira is Ottawa Lynx best reliever, with an excellent 0.59 ERA in 11 games (15.1 innings). He is 2-1, with 2 saves.

Tribe Baseball Alums Chasing Major League Dreams WILLIAMSBURG, VA - Brendan Harris sure knows how to make a major league impression.
On May 22nd, the Washington Nationals called up the former Tribe great. The next day, in his very first at bat of 2005, the second baseman drilled a 2-run pinch hit home run off of Reds’ pitcher Eric Milton. Since then, Brendan has also doubled and singled. By the end of his first week with Washington, Harris posted a .333 batting average, a .778 slugging percentage and 3 RBIs.
Brendan had spent the first part of the year with the Nationals’ triple-A affiliate, the New Orleans Zephyrs, but Tribe fans knew that Brendan had major league ability. When he was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the fifth round of the 2002 draft, he was the highest William and Mary player ever taken to that point. Brendan had a cup of coffee with the Cubs during the 2004 season; later that season, he was sent to Montreal as part of the four-team deadline deal that made Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra a Cub.
Brendan is part of a growing “Tribe” of ex-William and Mary players who are in the major leagues, or are progressing nicely in the minors. The day before Harris’ call-up, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim recalled former William and Mary point guard Curtis Pride. Curtis has a double in five at bats. Playing off and on in the major leagues since 1993, Curtis has put together a lifetime .253 average. He has 19 home runs and 80 RBIs in a career that has spanned nearly 400 games. Although Curtis never played baseball for William and Mary, he was a four year starter at guard on the basketball team.

Tribe Alumnus Curtis Pride Called To Majors By Anaheim Angels Joins Angels After Jarrod Washburn Placed On Disabled List WILLIAMSBURG, VA - William and Mary alumnus Curtis Pride was called up to the Anaheim Angels late yesterday from Triple-A Salt Lake City after pitcher Jarrod Washburn was placed on the 15-day disabled list for a ribcage injury.
Pride, 35, who did not play baseball at the College but was a star on the basketball team, has seen action at the major league level with Montreal, Detroit, Boston, Atlanta and the New York Yankees.
He hit .431 with two homers and 10 RBIs in 19 games at Salt Lake City after starting the season with the Nashua Pride of the independent Atlantic League, where he hit .446 with a home run and 12 runs batted in while appearing in 17 games. The Angels signed him to a minor league contract on May 28.
In his major league career, Pride has a .253 batting average with 19 home runs and 77 RBIs while appearing in 353 games.
"I was very confident I'd be back in the big leagues,” Pride told the Associated Press.

-photo by Kyla Baldwin The life of a professional baseball player can be full of more twists and turns than the plot of a daytime soap opera. Just ask Curtis Pride. Pride, an 18 year veteran of the pro ranks, began the 2003 season playing for the Nashua Pride, ironically, of the independent Atlantic League. Two months later, he found himself in Yankee stadium receiving a standing ovation.
"It's been an incredible year for me," Pride said of the 2003 season. "In the off-season, I didn't get any offers, so I played independent ball, put up good numbers, and hoped a team would recognize that. I never lost confidence in my abilities to get back to the big leagues. I played hard and hoped something good would happen."
After hitting .344 with 5 HR and 25 RBI in 16 games for Nashua, Pride was picked up by the Yankees organization in May and assigned to Triple A Columbus. He continued to swing a hot bat at Columbus, and was called up by the Yankees on July 4 to bolster their injury-riddled outfield.

He was granted free agency following the 1992 season and was picked up by Montreal that December. He made his major league debut on September 14, 1993 and proceeded to hit .444 (4 for 9) that month. Pride spent the 1994 season at Ottawa and began the 1995 season there, before returning to the Expos for a 48 game stint. He hit just .175 in 63 at bats and was released following the season.
Detroit Tigers 1996-97: Pride signed with Detroit on March 31, 1996 and began the season at Triple A Toledo before joining the big club. In his most successful season as a pro, the outfielder hit .300 with 10 HR in 95 games. He began the 1997 season in the Motor City, but was released in August after hitting .210 in 79 games. Boston Red Sox 1997: Signed by Boston just over a week later, Pride was assigned to Triple A Pawtucket. He appeared in only two games with the Red Sox that September, going 1 for 2. He was again granted free agency following the season.
