Career Hitting Stats Other Resources When Piazza joined the NL's Los Angeles Dodgers near the end of the 1992 season after having been a 62nd-round choice in the 1988 free agent draft, there was considerable joking in the media about the fact that he was the godson of Dodger manager Tommy LaSorda and was with the Dodgers only because of the friendship between the two families. He hit only .232 in 21 games that season. However, in 1993 the 6-foot-3, 197-pound Piazza became the team's starting catcher and ended the joking by winning the league's rookie of the year award. He had a .318 average with 35 home runs and 118 RBI. Piazza was the first rookie of the year to drive in more than 100 runs and his home run total was a record for a rookie catcher. Piazza hit .319 with 24 home runs in 1994, when the Dodgers played only 114 games because of the players' strike, and in 1995 he batted .346 to finish second to Tony Gwynn in National League hitting. He had 32 homers that season and he hit 36 in 1996, when he batted .336 and had 105 RBI to finish second in MVP voting. Piazza's best overall offensive season was 1997, when he hit .362 with 40 home runs and 124 RBI. He was only the third catcher to hit 40 home runs in a season, after Roy Campanella and Todd Hundley. Again, he was second in the MVP vote.

Baseball Fever General Baseball PDA View Full Version : Catcher's ERA abolishthedh 05-29-2003, 07:07 AM In another post, I mentioned Catcher's ERA as being a great idea, but not knowing how to find the information to make use of it. I thought I would post a formal request for leads on the matter.
Catcher's ERA is an idea put forth in The Diamond Appraised, by Craig Wright and Tom House (Simon and Schuster, 1989). I don't know whether the book is still being published. The idea is to calculate an ERA for the innings a catcher plays as catcher for his team. It is calculated exactly the same way as a pitcher's era, except for catchers. The problem is the availability of data for various catchers throughout baseball. We need the data for innings caught, and for the number earned runs given up in those innings.
The authors introduce the idea by posing the question of why managers who platoon catchers don't resort to changing catchers on occasion, instead of changing pitchers. It could also be very useful to determine whether or not two catchers should be platooned, whether a team should carry a pitcher's "personal catcher", or whether a player like Piazza should be moved to first base when he recovers from an injury. ;)
Anyway, we should stay on topic. Does anyone know where to find the data for innings caught, and the number of earned runs given up in those innings?

by Mike Carminati major league record of 351 home runs as a catcher I wrote The answer to the all-time leader in home runs by a catcher comes from Chuck Rosciam of the Encycolpedia of Catchers SABR HR Encyclopedia However, what I find interesting is that so many sports news services carried the news as if the record were kept officially. The record is something derived by baseball scholars using subjective (and I believe incorrect) assumptions.

Piazza de Resistance
by Mike Carminati Steve Serby of the venerable New York Post opines that the Mets and Mike Piazza would both do best if they were to have a parting of the ways: Piazza would benefit by ending his now tempestuous relationship with the Mets. The Mets would benefit by getting young talent on which to build (as if the Red Sox had any). That sounds great all around. The only thing wrong with the theory is that Steve Phillips would be basically signing his own death warrant. Phillips tenuous situation will last as long as the Mets can continue to pretend that they are playing for this season. If the Mets have a possibilty of contending, they need to keep Piazza. Once the Mets start a fire sale, it will be time for reflection and assessment and Phillips will very likely be the first to go. Phillips must know this and therefore, will be Dan Duquette-ing his way through at least the first half of the season. That is he will be forging ahead as if the Mets were in the playoff hunt. That means that Piazza will stay put at least for the time being. Posted on May 10, 2003 at 1:18 PM

Coming off the best offensive year by a catcher in baseball history, Piazza was in the last season of his contract with the Dodgers. When negotiations for an extension stalled, he was sent to the Marlins in a blockbuster seven- player trade. One week later, he was sent to the Mets for three prospects. Piazza went through a difficult adjustment period in New York, but won over the fans with a red-hot second half. Despite all of the year's challenges, Piazza still finished fourth in the National League batting race.

However, this is not the case for GT Interactive's Mike Piazza Strike Zone , which is clearly and undeniably a poor baseball game, especially when compared to its competition, namely All-Star Baseball '99 and Ken Griffey Baseball. Developed by Devil's Thumb, Mike Piazza has neither the visual flair of All-Star Baseball or the fast-paced, yet intuitive control setup of Ken Griffey Baseball. In fact, we can't think of one reason one single advantage that Piazza has over the competition, unless, of course, it is comedic value you seek in your baseball experience. What is America's favorite national pastime right now? Well, to settle the issue once and for all, USA WEEKEND brought together for their first meeting ever two sports titans, wrestling's The Rock and baseball's Mike Piazza. At this once-in-a-lifetime smackdown, no chairs were thrown; no rhubarbs erupted. Instead, these two champs were surprised to discover they had so much in common, including an appreciation of fans, fame and yes, folks Fabio.

Sit back and enjoy as two gigantic nerds share the pain of rooting for the Mets and Red Sox September 14, 2005 What the Options Are "Everyone is assuming that I'm not going to be here next year, but I've never said anything either way," Piazza said before the Mets opened a three-game series against Washington. "I'm just going to finish as strong as I can and see what the options are." Courtesy ESPN.com Here's what I would say to Piazza. Mike, you're a New York icon. You can still play. That said, don't be one of those guys who jumps at a fresh start when he's anything but. There are two possibilities for you next year if you leave New York: 1) Success, and a year long curtain call; or 2) failure, and a long (or abrupt) end tacked unceremoniously on to a great career. Oh, and either way you'll make a decent chunk of change, but it won't compare to what you already have in the bank. In fact, it probably won't equal what you got for those Alf commericals. How likely is it that you'll find success somewhere else? You'll get injured at some point; that's a given at this point. And wherever else you go unless it's LA, and arguably not even there you're not going to have the years' long adoration built up by carrying the team to carry you through the tough spots. Do you think you'll be a better hitter next year? Out of Shea, maybe your numbers will be marginally better. (OK, maybe they'll be a lot better.) But you'll be a year older, too, and your relationship with the the position you love is analogous to Kyle's with his family: it just doesn't love you back.
