Player Spotlight Craig Tomarkin The following comparison of Pete Rose to his long-time teammates: Bench, Morgan, Foster and Perez, shows that he was not in the top 3 players on his own team (and we're not even including the pitchers on his team such as Tom Seaver). To illustrate the point, batting records of their best single season, top 5 seasons, top 10 seasons and careers were compared. Their seasons were sorted by the following criteria to determine which is their "best." And, with exception of the "career" totals, no season with fewer than 400 plate appearances was included. The players were sorted by OPS (on base avg + slugging avg) and by Total Avg (TA=batting avg + slugging avg). Then, the rankings were averaged to determine the total combined ranking. After studying the table below, also consider the intangibles. While I don't consider Pete Rose a superior fielder, to his credit, he won 2 Gold Gloves as an outfielder. His teammates winning Gold Gloves, Bench who won 10 and Morgan who won 5, are in the Hall of Fame, Foster and Perez didn't win any and are not. As far as base running, if you use stolen bases as a measure, Rose was adequate, but not superior. To me, while he was fun to watch (I admit I was a big Reds fan) and longevity is a big factor, by most fundamental and widely accepted statistical measures, he just wasn't as obvious a choice for the Hall of Fame as some make it seem. Sorry Pete!

MLB FOREIGN EXPANSION by Craig Tomarkin It all started when the Montreal Expos debuted in 1969. They made their first and only post season appearance in strike shortened 1981, with a 60-48 record. Andre Dawson and Gary Carter were the team's hitting stars and they managed to beat the Phillies three games to two in the opening playoff series. In Game 5, Steve Rogers pitched a shut out for them against Steve Carlton to win it. They were unable to outlast the Dodgers in the next series though as Fernando Valensuela allowed only 3 hits in 8 2/3 innings to beat them 2-1 in a thrilling come from behind Game 5 victory. As of 2002, we are still waiting for them to make a World Series appearance. The Toronto Blue Jays were the second foreign team to join the MLB in 1977. Again, a team from Canada. This franchise proved to be stronger than the Expos. They first made the playoffs in 1985 and again in 1989. The team soon became a force, making the playoffs three straight years from 1991 to 1993. The last two seasons they won back to back World Series, establishing them as the first foreign team to build an MLB dynasty. Who will follow as the next foreign team? Will it be another team from Canada or will another country step to the plate?

    38. Bucketfoot Baseball Newsletter - Tony Perez And The Hall Of Shame
A baseball Newsletter by two guys, who love talking baseball.
    http://www.bucketfoot.com/archive/hos.html
Tony Perez and the Hall of Shame How can anyone say that Tony El Perez-o doesn't belong in the Hall. His numbers speak for themselves: of all the guys who ever played first base, and played for the Reds, and then played for the Philberts, and whose first name is Tony (or Antonio, or Antwan, or Antonichi), and who happen to have the last name Perez, and who have whined that they have been kept out of the Hall because of racial prejudice without citing the number of latin players that are already in the Hall, and whose friends whine about how nice he is, and who complain that "we should put Tony in the Hall based solely on his ethnic make-up to atone for past racial injustice" .....why then it becomes very clear, of all the players who match that description, Tony Perez had the best numbers...well, actually he's the only player who matches that description, so, actually, his number would really represent the AVERAGE for that group. Which is just what Perez' career was...AVERAGE. Yeah, but back to that racial thing....what a joke. Personally, I want to see Juan Acevedo put in to the Hall of Fame right now...forget the fact that he's still pitching (if you can call pitching for Milwaukee "pitching"). I mean, he's qualified just because there aren't any Portuguese guys in the Hall and he's Portuguese. Obvious discrimination that must be corrected...right?

Marlins Hire Tony Perez for Season
By MARK LONG, AP Sports Writer
MIAMI (AP) - Tony Perez changed his mind and agreed Thursday to manage the Florida Marlins for
    the rest of the season.
Perez was hired as interim manager when John Boles was fired Monday and said then he had no desire
to manage for more than a few weeks, citing commitments this summer.
But Perez, 58, said he spent the past three days breaking public speaking and baseball card show
engagements and agreed to take the job Thursday after general manager Dave Dombrowski asked him
    to reconsider.
``After three days of managing, I proved to myself I can do it,'' Perez said. ``I think I have the team. They play for me, and that's why I made the decision.'' Perez, a Hall of Fame first baseman primarily with the Cincinnati Reds, had been on Dombrowski's staff as a special assistant. He briefly managed Cincinnati in 1993 and was fired early in his only season
