Memo to Editor Rockwell and other baseball fans: Let me shift your attention for a moment from the Red Sox vs. the Yankees, the finest teams money can buy, to the Left Coast and the incomparable Barry Bonds. Let me bring you up to date. For the first 20 games of the 2004 Season Bonds:
  • Leads the league in batting: .500 Leads the league in HR: 9 Leads the league in Bases on Balls: 30 (this statistic is ominous)
These astonishing numbers are consistent with Barry’s shattering of records the past three seasons. Here are those highlights:
  • In 2001 Bonds hit 73 Home Runs (a record that will NEVER be broken) He won the League’s Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) In 2002 Barry won the Batting Title by hitting a glittering .370 During the World Series, he batted .471, hit 4 HR and was walked 13 times.

A single by Zimmerman and an error by Gerald Williams opened the inning, and after a hit by pitch, Wilkerson got Matsui to commit the 2nd error of the inning, tying the game. They'll go to the bottom of the ninth tied. Update : I just went back and watched the replay of Matsui's error. It's a tough error to give the second baseman. The infield was in and the ball was hit hard, but just to his right. I guess the official scorer believes Kaz should have knocked it down.

Main November 04, 2003 3 (Million) Martinez Lunch Edgar Martinez signed a one-year deal to stay with the Seattle Mariners today. He'll earn a minimum of three million dollars. The two-time AL batting champion had a $4 million base salary this year and earned $3.5 million in performance bonuses. He faced a Sunday deadline to file for free agency. But Martinez wants to finish his career with the Mariners, the only organization he's played for. "I'm very glad everything worked out and I'm coming back for another year," he said. "I think if we didn't reach an agreement, the chances that I'd stay home were a lot greater than I'd play for another team." I used to hear a lot about how players don't stay with one team anymore, but it seems a lot of recent stars had their careers in one city. Here's the list of all players who played at least 12 seasons and played for only one major league franchise: The number of players with one team did go down from the 1970's to the 1980's, and you have to figure in a couple of expansions. But it's not as bad as some people would have you believe. And it looks like Edgar Martinez will be another on the retired part of this list eventually. Baseball Editorials, Analysis, and Talk from Richard Lederer

Drilling Deeper Into The Greatest HR Hitters Ever
by Richard Lederer Trying to rank the greatest home run sluggers in history is no easy feat. Thus far, I have produced lists based on the standard cumulative totals as well as lists with the differences between the individual player and his league average expressed in absolute and relative terms. My main problem with ranking players based on cumulative totals only is that such rankings tend to be biased toward longevity and those who played in eras favoring that particular stat. As such, I prefer basing my rankings on how a player performed vs. the league average. The question then comes down to whether I should use absolute or relative differences. At the risk of losing those readers who may be mathematically challenged, let me try to explain why I think the best system is a combination of the two. Although the ratios are the same, hitting 30 HR in a season vs. 10 for league average is clearly worth more than producing 12 HR in a league with an average of 4. As a result, a formula based on the ratio of HR vs. the league average will tend to overvalue hitters who played during the dead ball era and undervalue those who played during the live ball era.

We never addressed the boys by Pirates in those public prints. Nor were their foes labeled Americans, especially because their Royal Rooters in Beantown oft preferred the Pilgrims appellation. HOME TICKETS SCHEDULE PLAYERS ... TEAM HISTORY San Francisco Giants Baseball History San Francisco Giants, professional baseball team and one of five teams in the West Division of the National League (NL). The Giants play at Pacific Bell Park. The team played in New York City until 1958 and was originally called the Gothams, after one of that city’s many nicknames. The Giants wear uniforms of orange, black, and white.
Founded in 1883, the Giants organization is one of the oldest in major league baseball. Also one of the most celebrated, the organization holds a major league record with 47 members in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Seven future Hall of Fame members played for the 1924 pennant-winning club, including the entire infield.
Over the decades, Giants greats have included outfielders Bobby and Barry Bonds, Willie Mays, and Mel Ott; infielders Orlando Cepeda, Willie McCovey, Johnny Mize, and Bill Terry; and pitchers Carl Hubbell, Juan Marichal, Christy Mathewson, and Gaylord Perry. Led by such legendary managers as Leo Durocher and John McGraw, the franchise has won five World Series championships, the last being in 1954.
When the Giants finished the 1932 season in last place, tensions erupted between McGraw and his players. McGraw named the slugging first baseman and 1930 league MVP Bill Terry to take over as player-manager in 1933. Terry guided the Giants to a World Series victory that year with help from home-run hitting outfielder Mel Ott and league-leading pitcher Carl Hubbell, both part of the talented team built by McGraw. In 1936 and 1937 Terry again led the Giants to pennant victories, but the team fell in the World Series before the new dominant power in major league baseball—the New York Yankees.

Baseball fan that he was, Blackmun chronicled the history of the sport back to its beginnings on the Elysian Fields of Hoboken, New Jersey (No, Virginia, Abner Doubleday did not invent baseball in Cooperstown, New York). In the course of setting out the history, Blackmun, pleased with himself and the assignment, named many of the all time baseball greats, even such as Hans Lobert, a Philadelphia Phillies speedster who was far from a household name outside of his own house. When the opinion was passed around to the other judges for review, they noted names Blackmun had not included. Justice Thurgood Marshall complained that Blackmun had not included any black players. Blackmun tried to make the case that he was writing about the earlier days of baseball, but soon realized his error and added Jackie Robinson and others. Potter Stewart, the Reds fan, complained about the absence of a few Reds players. Blackmun dutifully added their names. A few of the other justices enjoyed twitting him about their favorites that had been left out, and Blackmun kept revising his list to satisfy all his colleagues. It ballooned to 88 names.
