Seating capacities and field dimensions represent a typical season. Complete for 1998, some data as far back as 1884, including disbanded teams. Baseball Stadium Effects on Hitters
Dear Joe, Of all the great hitter in the past, there is so much speculation about how much they were aided by their home field. Two players I am wondering about are Mel Ott and Chuck Klein. Both homerun hitting lefties who played their home games, and enjoyed most of their success, in fields with short RF fences. What part, if any, do you think these parks played in these players careers? Thanks for your time, Morgan D. Joe Mock's Response Morgan, Thanks for writing me at the Baseball Guru. A lot has been written about Mel Ott and how his hitting stats were probably aided by his home park, so I decided to delve first into Chuck Klein. As you probably know, his career looks like this: Years Team Home park 1928 through 1933 Phils Baker Bowl 1934 through mid '36 Cubs Wrigley mid '36 through mid '38 Phils Baker Bowl mid '38 through mid '39 Phils Shibe Park mid '39 through end '39 Pirates Forbes Field 1940 through 1944 Phils Shibe Park All of this moving around makes analysis tricky (the Phils did keep trading to get him back, didn't they!). And the stats I looked at didn't differentiate between home and away ... so let's make the following assumptions:

The greatest honor bestowed upon a professional baseball player is enshrinement in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Just one percent (1%) of those who have played Major League Baseball have a plaque in Cooperstown. Overall, 237 of the tens of thousands of individuals who have served the game as Major and Negro League players, managers, executives, pioneers and umpires have a permanent residence in the Hall of Fame Gallery. The Members have been elected by the Baseball Writers Association of America and specially appointed committees, such as the Veterans' Committee, and the now-defunct Committee on the Negro Leagues. This Week in Giants Baseball History, August 1 - 7
By Don Shin
Date: Aug 1, 2005
Sure, they weren’t Giants, but SFDugout would like to extend congratulations to the newest members of Baseball’s Hall of Fame – Wade Boggs and Ryne Sandberg, as well as longtime San Diego broadcaster Jerry Coleman and ESPN icon Peter Gammons – inducted this past weekend. Here are a few other HOFers from years past.
August 1
Hall of Famer Giant Mel Ott hit his 500th home run of his career on this date in 1945, as the San Francisco Giants
August 2
Pittsburgh Pirates hurler Ron Kline for his first career four-bagger on this date in 1959. Stretch would finish his career with 521 career home runs, 469 of them as a Giant (fourth in franchise history behind Ott). Twenty-seven years and a day later, McCovey was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
August 3
Clark Drives in Six in Win: Despite only two hits, Will Clark delivered six RBIs that powered the Giants to a 12-7 victory over the San Diego Padres at Jack Murphy Stadium on this date back in 1993. The Thrill hit a 3-run shot in the fifth inning off of Padres starter

Local high schools produce finest baseball talent New Orleans
July 27, 2005 ONE OF THE three greatest high school baseball teams of all time, along with the 1936 and 1946 Jesuit clubs, was the 13-man 1951 Warren Easton squad, coached by Billy Brinkman, top right. They won the state championship after tying St. Aloysius for the city title by winning four playoff games in two days. Among the Eagles stars were pitcher Warren Bourgeois, first player on the second row, and catcher Jules Ursin, to Bourgeois' left, who were given contracts by the Boston Red Sox. First baseman Mickey Lacoste, second from right on first row, and shortstop Al Seeger, standing next to the coach on top row, went to the Chicago Cubs. All were named to the All-State team. (Photo courtesy of Michael Brinkman) By RON BROCATO The year was 1951. Prep baseball in New Orleans was alive and well even then as it is today. The league had just eight schools and all were highly competitive. But the three that ruled the diamond that year were Warren Easton, Jesuit and St. Aloysius. They were loaded with some of the best talent in Louisiana high schools, some of who are selected to the Clarion Herald's All-Time list of the top100 players from local preps. Warren Easton, coached by Billy Bronkman - with help from "Hoss" Memtsas, Olin Fink and long-time athletic director Mike Ziegler - shared the city title with Johnny Altobello's St. Aloysius squad after losing to the Crusaders on the final night of the regular season, 6-5, on Chris Ansel's game-winning hit.
