Youngest Active Player Chronology When Hall-of-Famer Harry Wright played his first game of the 1871 season on May 5, 1871, he became the oldest person to ever play major league baseball. That's not to say that nobody ever took the field who was older than Wright's thirty-six. Rather, no player who was born earlier than Wright has ever played in the majors. Even with expansion, it's unlikely that Wright's record will be broken. As far as I know, there isn't a person alive who was born earlier than January 10, 1835. Pitcher Fred Chapman was the youngest player to make his debut (14 years 7 months 29 days). But the youngest person to ever play baseball keeps changing. At the end of the 1998 season, that distinction belongs to Pirates thirdbaseman Aramis Ramirez. Born June 25, 1978, he's more than a year younger than Kerry Wood and almost a month younger than Mike Caruso. No doubt, someone younger than Ramirez will make their major league debut sometime next year. One of the reasons this list is interesting is it helps to answer a question I'm frequently asked "who was the first person to reach the majors who was younger than me?" If you were born on June 1, 1969, the answer is Ken Griffey. Here's the list of players who have held the title "Baseball's Youngest Player." http://www.thediamondangle.com/marasco/peo/ottoh.html
By David Marasco The first time I saw a picture of Sadaharu Oh at the plate I thought "He looks exactly like Mel Ott." What I was looking at was Oh's leg raised high in the air. As it turns out, I was wrong. Mel Ott's swing involved his raising his leg high in the air and taking a big step as he swung. Instead, Oh would raise his leg in the air as he waited for the pitch. His batting stance has been compared to a dog watering a fire hydrant. The initial similarity between the two is a false one, but these men do share a lot in common. The first thing that can be said about these men is that they could clout. Baseball loves home run hitters. Cecil Fielder summed up the situation quite succinctly recently when he claimed that "the Cadillacs are at the end of the bat." Yet two great home run kings have been taken lightly despite their achievements. They both had the word Giants written across their uniforms. They were Mel Ott and Sadaharu Oh. Beginnings
In 1926 a seventeen-year-old kid from New Orleans got lost in New York City. He did the first thing that came to mind and went back to Penn Station. There he met the son of the New York Giants' clubhouse man. One teenager gave the other the bad news. Mel Ott was late for his try out and John McGraw was pissed. Mugsy didn't stay mad. After watching Ott take batting practice pitches over the wall McGraw knew he had a future Hall of Famer. McGraw also knew something else; if he sent the kid to the minors some scrub manager would try to "correct" Mel's funky high leg kick. Realizing that this could ruin Ott's career McGraw made a decision. For the rest of the year Ott would be on the roster, but would not see much play. He would sit next to John McGraw on the bench and learn baseball.

Consistent Hitters and Similar Seasons
by Tom Ruane
I have always been a fan of consistent players. Sure it's thrilling when a player like Greg Vaughn or Gary Sheffield has a break-out season, but there's something to be said for a player you can count on, year-in and year-out, to perform at a predictable level. This lets a team's fans (as well as its GM) worry about other things when thinking about the upcoming season. So who have been our most (and least) consistent players? Well, one way to determine this would be to pick some measurement (like batting average or ERA) and see how much it changes from year to year. My favorite offensive measurement that's easy to calculate is OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) so let's start with that. I decided to use a 100 plate appearance per season minimum because (at least initially) I wanted to concentrate on performance rather than opportunity. I also figured it might bring to the foreground players often overlooked. So what player had the most consistent back-to-back seasons? Rusty Staub, from 1975 to 1976. Here are his stats:

contact the webmaster business opportunities privacy policy The minor leagues in baseball were created to provide an opportunity for young talent to develop before being called up to the majors. But Gretna, Louisiana native Mel Ott skipped this step. New York Giants manager John McGraw was so worried that minor league managers would tamper with Ott’s perfect swing that he called the young slugger up to the majors straight out of high school at the tender age of 16. For a few seasons, Ott rode the bench and filled in as needed, but once he got his shot, he took the league by storm. He played for 22 seasons, in which he compiled a career batting average of .304, 511 home runs, and 1,860 RBI. He batted over .300 ten times, played in three World Series, and was the National League home run leader six times. Following his playing days, he managed the Giants for seven seasons before being elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1951. Mel Ott’s life was tragically cut short in a car accident on November 21, 1958. He is one of only eight Giants in history to have had his number (#4) retired.
